white smoke cold start, goes away when warm?

hello,

1988 10thAE turbo 2, light street port from bonzai racing. This car i know has a leaky injector, which makes it a pukestain to start in the morning, but once started it's alright. It doesn't smell like coolant, nor is it bubbling. I do have to add oil to the crank every so often because it disappears quickly. Anyone have any ideas? Or need any more info?

If its flooding because of the leaky injector, some smoke on startup isn't surprising

Neither is adding oil with a good working OMP

fettdawg 04-14-15 09:35 AM

apologies, i actually do not have an OMP on this car, it runs pure premix. I should have added that in the original post which is why the adding oil more than what you would originally think kind of worries me

Check to see if your oil is diluted with fuel.

I'd bet it is.

The fuel from the leaky injector will find it's way into the crankcase.

If this condition is persistent, you'll probably kill the oil seals on the rotor and end up with lots-O-oil consumption

will do, as i am swapping the leaky primaries with the current secondaries and putting 1000's in secondary this week actually :) hopefully time will tell!

haha for sure! if i get everything i have for this bad boy assembled in the next month i should be sitting pretty. I've never dealt with rtek though, so it's going to be a learning experience

lduley 04-15-15 02:16 PM

Neither have I, just keep your eye on your wideband and don't boost spike

I'm good with dizzys and carbs though lol

fettdawg 04-15-15 03:35 PM

yeah i'll have another set of smart eyes come tune time, and will only be tuning for 10-12psi at the moment until i fully understand the softwares simplistic charts.

lduley 04-15-15 05:04 PM

I almost wouldn't mind being there to learn that myself, always wanted to see the process as I'd like to get a rtek for my N/A someday and tune it myself, than move onto bigger and better things lol

no problem man! it'll be a few weeks ish until i get everything in good order assuming i haven't popped any seals and the de-winterize goes as planned :) i'll keep in touch!

lduley 04-20-15 08:31 PM

dewinterizing? I'm obviously a horrible person cause I just park mine for the winter in my buddies pole barn, and start it and let it run for 30 minutes or so every week or so

nah that works well! i don't start mine at all during the winter so i have to be gentle and prep her for first start, make the seals are loose / wet and not bound up, fresh oil and build some case pressure, rad flush etc.

lduley 04-22-15 07:00 PM

thats a 3 hour job, stop slackin lol

no garage space to work on it sadly, and the elements haven't been very friendly since last weekend :P

lduley 04-26-15 04:01 PM

was gorgeous today, you should've gotten it running like a 787b

there ya go, now I gotta jump in mine (which I need to do nothing to :P) and come see ya lol

lduley 05-17-15 12:52 PM

things going alright? bumpity

fettdawg 05-18-15 11:41 AM

have fixed a few coolant drizzles / leaks and now just trying to figure out the end game for a radiator / fan setup. Do believe the coolant passage on the turbo is leaking as well, so there's that too. More worried about getting a reliable fan setup going so I can troubleshoot deeper into the cooling as right now I am just running stock rad and clutch fan. Haven't "drove" this car since mid-spring, only started/moved it around/ tore down to water pump housing and replaced gasket.

fettdawg 05-18-15 11:44 AM

I am like 99% sure coolant seals are good to go though, no smoking. just leaking from the turbo flange hot side to downpipe and i can't see any major issues with fluid levels / white smoke beyond when it's warming up. so there's that good news!
