When to port
Ok, i have an s5 N/A thats currently in pieces(getting ready for a rebuild) and im looking to either port it myself, or find a shop to have it ported.
So my question is when should i port it? And what would be the best company for a template? thanks chris |

I also would like to know, other than air tools, or an electric grinder, could I use a dremmel? And if not for the physical port job, could i do the polishing with one?

can you use a Dremel to port an engine? intakes? yes. exhausts? i'll just say i was unsuccessful.
that said, i wouldn't suggest porting with a Dremel. clean up and polishing (not the intakes) with it is okay, but a die grinder yields much better results in my opinion. it takes less time, too. just get your hands on a die grinder and compressor if you're serious about doing it yourself. |

I used the racing beat template, but I had someone else do the labor. Someone who has done it before and I saw that the engines would run right after he ported them.
A dremel would be god awful slow. Polishing looks nice, but I read somewhere that everything in the intake from the point were fuel is injected on down, doesn't benefit from the smooth surfaces and that the rough surface provides more turbulance (sp?) and promotes better air fuel mixture. So racing beat has templates as well. As far as how the polishing vs rough surface helps a/f mixture, ill see what i can find. I was reading on the Mazdatrix website and they stated that the 6 port housings are really hard to do a big port(not what i wanted in the first place) however, they say its been done. Does anyone have a 6 port s5 that a bridgeport on it? And what about exhaust ports, is there a template i should use for this, or just use a compass to try and get an exact circle and do just a bigger port?
I really appritiate all the help, because i would hate to do this wrong, and need to get new housings. thanks chris |
Porting with a dremel would absolutely suck and take an eternity! Even doing it with a die grinder and a large compressor takes quite a bit of time. You need at least 10cfm per minute @ 90psi to keep up with a die grinder, so a large compressor is a must.
If you decide to attack it yourself there are alot of places you need to be careful not to cut, for instance the corner seal path and the oil control ring surface. Do not cut a perfect circle exhaust, mostly you can do some widening and open it up earlier. Just be sure to keep all your ports equal between front and rear housings. i gladly recommend RB templates. that was what i started with before i started making my own, but i was under the impression that RB did not make a 6-port intake template. go ahead and get an exhaust template from them, but for intakes, i thought Pineapple and Mazdatrix were pretty much your only choices (from a dedicated company).
there are many threads that mention why polishing your intakes is not recommended. i can vouch for the Gen I and Rotary Performance sections of the forum. do yourself a favor and find them - very good reading. and finally ... NO! no circular exhausts. there is some pretty good info on here about exhaust port shapes, too. to aid in your searches, you may wnat to include the names of the users: Jeff20B, Rx7carl, RXBeetle, Rotarygod and BlueTII along with your keywords. hope that helps. |
Thank you everyone, i can not stress how much this helps, specially because i was very excited about using a dremmel before yesterday:P.

MAZDATRIX makes the 6 port template but they dont really recommened porting a 6 port. i was there in person and they cut one and sold me a template (intake). it really doesnt take much off the port but the way it set up allows you to port down without cutting into the water jacket

Pineapple racing sells a template for a 6pi that opens up both aux and main ports. Its pretty cheep, but my biggest worry is the water jacket thing...so I am happy I have a set of practice irons my teacher is letting me use.

Just by the Pineapple template for all of what? 35 bucks? go to yr nearest high school. ask the instructor if you can use the diegrinder. bust out the dychem and go to work.

thats what i plan on doing because im already in a class that i have the ability to do all the work i need, so Im not worried...however, does anyone make a 1/2 bridge template? i know 1/2 bridges are usually not done well, however i have 2 practice plates I can work on as well as my own, and im looking to make more horsepower. does anyone know if anyone makes a 6pi 1/2 bridge template, or should I just use the streetport.

Thanks everyone for the help. I finished my actual port today, and ill take pictures(even if i know ill be flamed) and polish them next week.
