unknown engine year

I have a problem that I was hoping one of you could solve.

I have a 1983 rx7 with a 13b engine. Needless to say, the engine is a replacement for a 12A, but I don't know exactly what year the 13b is. I have a broken water pump and I would like to get the correct part.

Now, I figured that a quick inspection of the engine would lead me to a VIN or some unique identifier. However, the only thing I could find is a stamping of "F6596" on top of the engine. Could someone tell me what that means, if anything, or where the VIN is located?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Pull that intake manifold off and count the ports! 4 or 6? Do you have the old Mazda logo on the engine?

My bet is the 76-78 4 port!

Good luck!

just looking at that intake, it looks like 6 port. probably from a 84-85 gsl-se. is the wp housing cast iron or aluminum? 86 and on used aluminum.

from here it looks like an '84-'85 SE engine (13B-6PI) but if you can ...
snap a pic of the ignition side of the motor as long as there is no clutter over the rotor housings. if you can give me a good shot of the rotor housing, then i can tell you if it's old 13B or new 13B - but that's about it. any more distinction would require invasive inspections.

Here's a couple more engine pics that I took when I bought it. I know they don't show what you are asking for, but I'll take some more later.

it shows more than enough. it's an '84-'85 13B from a housing standpoint. of course, that doesn't mean that the engine was not torn apart and built up with later rotors, but the housings are NOT '86 and newer.
