TPS and performance

How bad can a bad tps be on performance. Im pretty sure mine is shot to shit but I will not be sure till tommorow. My multi is a cheap 8 dollar one and it dosent read down that far. Thanks

what year is the car?
when there's a problem with the tps, the ecu assumes WOT, which causes it to drown in gas and stumble like a mofo

Bowdowntome 05-11-04 06:27 PM

its a 91 n/a and I just checket it and it is all over the place. VERY erratic.

Bowdowntome 05-13-04 01:10 PM

How bad would it affect it at WOT. Just asking because the car is pretty sluggish.

GUITARJUNKIE28 05-13-04 04:15 PM

could possibly effect wot if it's not adjusted right.

is it just slow, or is it backfiring or missing?

mazdaverx713b 05-13-04 04:38 PM

the tps can make the engine fall flat on its face and it can cause high and or erratic idle problems. it can make the engine buck atcruise and will help determine air fuel ratio.

GUITARJUNKIE28 05-13-04 05:56 PM

but i've never seen a bad tps cause the vehicle to just accelerate slowly.

mazdaverx713b 05-13-04 10:59 PM

it has happened to me

RotaryWeaponSE7EN 05-14-04 08:30 AM

me too

mazdaverx713b 05-15-04 10:23 AM

it can even cause erratic problems on a 12A and her stock nikki! for those who don't know, yes the nikki has a tps

It backfires quite a bit but I am assuming that is from too much gas and no cats. It dosent miss though.

mazdaverx713b 05-15-04 12:52 PM

backfiring is common in a rotary, especially when the timing has been played with or someone has messed with the mixture screw

GUITARJUNKIE28 05-15-04 05:22 PM

you mean your car would accelerate smoothly, just slowly? i find that hard to believe.

Bowdowntome 05-16-04 02:36 PM

not exactally smoothly ,but it dosent mis, it is constant accelerating but it wil be a hard pull then it will fall off to a softer pull and so on and so on.

it accelerated smoothly up to about 5K and then it sputtered and would not pull. up to that point, the car was just slow, feeling as if it were extremely under powered. perhaps like a converter were clogged.

GUITARJUNKIE28 05-16-04 08:51 PM

ok, now that, i believe.
i wish i lived closer when you guys were having these problems...i love figuring that stuff out!

mazdaverx713b 05-16-04 09:06 PM

i have been working on my SE since october and it just now is coming into its own. i know the timing is still dicked a little but we are getting better after the new tps.

GUITARJUNKIE28 05-17-04 09:34 AM

on n/a's i just crank timing up until it starts missing a little bit @ idle, then back off a tad from there. then use premium. it helps out with low end power, throttle response, and gas milage.

not the safest thing for turbos though.
