Oil Filter Thread Size
Was wondering if anyone knows the thread size of the Oil Filter stud on a 1984 12a (I would guess that they are pretty much universal).
I tried a 1/2" NPT plug, but it would only go in a thread or two and then lock up. ~Sup |
It can't be NPT.
It has to be metric. Perhaps 14mm x 1.5? -Ted |
Yeah, i didn't figure it would be a pipe tap, it was the only thing that i had handy. Its close to a 3/4" bolt, so i would guess that it is 20mm or something.
Going to go to NAPA today and dig through the bolt bin and find out. ~Sup |
A Napa Gold 1347 is a good filter if you've got the room. Otherwise, a Silver 21356 if you need to short style. I'm not sure what the Gold part number would be for the short style. I suppose you could cross-reference a Fram PH3593A.
I'm going to dig up an oil filter pedestal and see if I can get a decent measurement of the thread pitch and diameter. |
20mm diameter x 1.5 thread pitch x 17mm long. I meased an old tall style pedestal from the '70s and a short style from the '80s. They had identical stud dimesions.

Thanks for the info Jeff20B. I didn't need this stuff for a filter (The good people at Napa got all of that taken care of right after i first purchased the old girl) this is for a custom fab project that I am thinking about doing. Since you can't use the Racing Beat filter bypass blocks on my 12A, going to have a friend with a machine shop fab me up some specialty stuff. It just isn't the same if you can't do it custom.

Why can't you use the RB bypass block? Do you have a beehive oil cooler or something? I wasn't supposed to use the bypass block on my 20B, since the stock filter pedestal also has a banjo bolt in it, as do FD pedestals. I simple drilled and tapped my bypass block for a barbed fitting with an oil line that is the same internal diameter as the stock line.
