stripped exhaust stud

so i was taking out the pipe that connects to the exhaust manifold (fc) and the nut started to seize onto the stud! thankfully, i was able to get it out verrrry slowly but the threads on the stud are done.
is there a way to fix the stud or replace it? edit: rented a tap and die set, didnt work. is the best solution to cut and drill it out, then replace it with a through bolt and nut? Attachment 604358 thanks. |
you can find the die to fix it but it is an oddball size, iirc it is a 14mmX1.5. somewhere like fastenal would have a die most likely.
you probably will never get the stud out, so repairing it is your best bet. those studs are still inconel, and even a little damaged they can handle a bit of torque. |
14x1.5 eh? i tried a 12x1.5 i rented from autozone maybe thats why it didnt work haha.
however it did clean up the first couple threads, then it was way too difficult to turn (didnt want to be out $100 for a loaner). I threaded on the nut that wasnt stripped and it went on? you cant see it in the pic, but theres a spot where its pretty flat with no visible thread. so worst case scenario, I cant cut it off and drill through it? |
if the nut goes on, just put some anti seize on it and run it.
might be a 12mm, i never have actually needed to repair any downstream studs, luckily. |
sorry, wasnt clear. itll only go on the first couple threads that the die went through until it stopped

You wont get it out. Just think about what you would do it you cut it off and drilled it out and it didn't work.
If it were mine, I'd buy the correct size die and give that a go. Even if you had to go one size smaller, like 14x1.25mm. Validate the correct size using a good nut and get the correct size die. |

The right die is the only way to fix it.
Take the good nut with you and get the die. Changing the thread pitch is not a good idea stick with the original size. |

IMO, I would be patient and use the right die to re-thread it if you can. I had one break on me and I thought I could just drill it out....HA, HA, HA, HA. HA! No friggen way. I bet I went through 10 or so bits of various sizes trying to get that damn thing to drill and all I did was ruin bits. I finally took it to a machine shop that had the expensive carbon bits you need to drill these things and 35 bucks later, it was out. I put a new stud in and finished the job, but yeah, re-thread if you can. If not, penetrating oil and stud remover. If that fails, machine shop. Good luck.

i mentioned they are inconel? not very easy to drill, extract or remove.
if it winds up coming to that, a good used n/a manifold is only about 40 bucks. |
yes. i ended up rethreading it, rotaryevolution. i guess the loaner from autozone was more of a chaser than an actual cutting die that i ended up buying from sears.

I've done the "cut stud and drill a hole,then bolt it" method before..
Worked for me. (I'm dying to try out my NEW "Fantfriggintabulous" drill bits..heh..they drill through >>>Drill bits!!..seriously!) |
A bit late but I'm not sure why people are saying you can't get them out. I've had a 100% success rate in doing so with penetrating oil and a GOOD set of Vice Grips. It helps too if you can weld a nut onto the stud not to use to remove it, but to heat shock it.

Penetrating oil and heat..then weld a 1/2 inch side nut or 10mm ..take your time and be patient it will come out
