Rx-7 that’s been sitting advice

Hi and thanks, in advance, for your help.

After loving the first generation Rx’s for most of my life I just stumbled upon one I’m interested in, but I need some input from you on how to check it out.

It’s a 1982 and I’m told the car has been sitting a few couple years in the garage. It has about 96k miles and is in very good shape overall. The owner says it ran well prior to being parked, but now it won’t stay running at idle. It sounds ok at higher rpm, but I’m concerned it could have a significant problem. The obvious is that it’s probably fuel related and a fairly easy fix, but should I be concerned about something deeper? If so, how would I check?

I have a compression tester and thought I’d check it, but what should the compression be on an ‘82 with 96k miles?

Any other thoughts or recommendations would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Welcome to the board. :)

Compression test is a good idea, but as you mentioned, there are other reasons a sitting car may not want to idle - several, in fact. I guess the point really is if what you're paying for it (and, I'm not asking) will still be worth it to you if it's not a simple fix? Do you take the owner's word that it ran well before he parked it or do you have reservations? My gut would go right to carburetor issues, but that's pure speculation at this point.

Have you tried draining the gas tank and refuel with fresh gas? Also change out the spark plugs, engine oil, fuel filter. Might be good to check the TPS as well.

Here's a thread about TPS adjustment for 1st gen
