problem with ignition. please help

i have a 87 fc gxl NA 5 speed. with 72K miles.
the car is very difficult to start, takes several trys.
it has randomly shut off a few times. idleing when parked, at a drive-thru, at a red light, and at a stop sign. my mechanic checked it out and found that there is no spark at the top coil/igniter near the clutch master cylinder. but its not impossible to start the engine. but when it starts it seems to run smooth and ok.

is it possible the CAS is bad?
can the CAS or anything be adjusted?

hks intake
corksport header
corksport catback
mazdatrix CAS angle cover
spark plugs are less than a year old

thank you
