Breakdown:

- Two rotors
- 2 side intake ports
- 1 side exhaust port
- 1 peripheral exhaust port that opens under high load that dumps POST turbine and also feeds an EGR valve
- Twinscroll turbo charger fed by side exhaust port

There is defintiely more to these patents, but this is what I have gathered by copy/pasting bits of the patents into google translate.

What do you guys think? To me this is as promising as it gets that Mazda is in fact releasing a new rotary sports car.

Verrrrrrrrrrry Interesting News .Something is going on at Mazda

This is cool. I wonder how they will get around the side seals failing as is common with an turbocharged RX-8 engine.
Maybe because the side intake and side exhaust ports are on opposed sides of the engine which allows them to run a different seal configuration on each side of the rotor?
Or maybe they will recirculate a lot of EGR during boost which lowers exhaust temperature.

Anyway, very curious to see if this tech will actually make it into a product someday, and what the application will be. This seems too complicated for an engine that will just function as a range extender.

Weren't they working on a hybrid that uses a tiny rotary as the gas engine? Could have sworn I read that somewhere...here!

Maybe these patents mean they're moving forward.

Mazda has confirmed they will release the all Mazda EV with the single rotor range extender as a 2020 model and then follow up with further hybrid models based off their collaboration with Toyota.

It has been variously reported to be a crossover and based on Mazda3, though the prototypes were based on the Mazda2. My bet is it will be an optional model of the freshly debuted CX30 platform.

Maybe having the single exhaust port on the side of the rotor opposite the oil jet allows the rotor to be cooled enough to preserve the springiness of the Inconel side seal springs.

this all seems interesting, but i made the decision a while back not to believe anything rotary until i can go see it on a dealer floor.

that said, i wonder what chamber size/dimensions they went with for this one.

So the most exciting thing about this patent is this diagram - as it clearly shows an FR layout car (as opposed to a range extender):

Also another interesting thing: I can't seem to find any reference to OMP or displacement in either of the two patents....

turbo looks like it is bolted to the engine similar to many these days...

definitely interesting.... i'm still not convinced on a rotary sports car just yet but promising.
