FD Help

Is it normal for when I brake, that the rpms go down? also what is good idle rpm?

Sideo 09-13-10 09:59 PM

I'm assuming your talking about pressing brakes when stopped? The brake booster is vacuum operated so when you press them down it pulls vacuum off the engine

Gene! 09-13-10 10:27 PM

Ahh so in other words is like turning the ac on?

Sideo 09-13-10 10:30 PM

Yea kinda. It's like having a temporary vacuum leak.

Gene! 09-13-10 10:40 PM

Also My Idle Sensor Control Solenoid valve has a problem how do I check this, Or replace it?

7dust 09-14-10 11:18 AM

^^^ Its on the back of the extension manifold. It can be removed and replaced without pulling the manifold, but it is a tight fit.

One more question, If my car takes acouple cranks to turn over, does this mean the spark plugs are going out or the alternater?

7dust 09-14-10 10:49 PM

^^^ A couple of tries or a few seconds of cranking to start?

Regardless, an alternator will not keep your car from starting. Spark plugs could keep your car from starting easily if they are fouled . However, if the car runs smooth once it starts - its probably not a plug problem either.

Gene! 09-14-10 11:05 PM

No it runs smooth when on, just it takes a couple key turns like I can hear alittle snap, so idk if its not letting enough sparks to ignite

you might have the starter relay issue.

Do you hear a click, and have to turn the key to "on" a few times before the engine acutally turns over and starts?

Gene! 09-15-10 08:12 AM

Yeah I hear a click sometimes when it doesnt start first go

OneRotor 09-15-10 08:20 AM

starter.

7dust 09-15-10 08:31 AM

Maybe - or just the FD starter interlock system showing its age. If the starter solenoid does not receive a full 12 volts, it will only click and not engage the starter.

I fixed the click-click-click-start problem by installing an additional relay at the starter itself.

Hotwheelz 09-15-10 03:40 PM

Mine dips in rpms as well when i stop and my dash pot is broken..coincidence? Maybe not.

The starting problem is well documented as pettit racing has designed a simple way to cure it
http://pettitracing.com/rx7/index_ignition.htm

7dust 09-15-10 08:36 PM

^^^ The Pettit "Starter Booster" is a $5 relay, some wire and a few crimp connectors. Seriously. Make it yourself.

Ive never seen a dashpot break and lots of people just ditch it as part of the bare-blocking and emissions removal process even though it has nothing to do with emissions. Your car might be dipping in RPM's when you decelerate because you need to adjust the fuel cut on your PFC.

Gene! 09-15-10 09:41 PM

Well Im going to change the spark plugs out see if that help, can anyone give me tips i want to do this the right way

7dust 09-15-10 10:24 PM

Are you following along here at all???

If you're getting the click-click-start problem then plugs aren't your problem.

Have fun doing what you do. :icon_tup:

Gene! 09-15-10 10:32 PM

Im following along, but I think the cars gone 4k miles, without spark plugs being changed its worth a shot

Gene! 09-16-10 08:34 AM

Well I had a good idea of jump starting the car, and boom it starting without any problem, what does this mean is it still the starter or could it be my battery?
