Car went limp won’t rev past 4k rpm
Car went limp won’t rev past 4k rpm
Hey so I’m new to rotary’s and always wanted a rx-7. Finally bought a 1986 and took her out to rip the mountain a little bit, ran like a dream car was taken care of and I broke a little traction around a corner and after I straightened her out the car went limp and now she bogs down at 4k rpm
Welcome, glad you joined the rx7 ownership and the club.
Agreed with Jeff above.
Are there any mods to the car? Do you know the maintenance history?
Power loss can be a number of things to think about.
Clogged exhaust/cat.
Clogged fuel filter (potentially from cornering hard, stirring up junk in the tank)
Clogged injectors (see above)
Poor ignition components - Replace plugs, wires if not done recently
These cars are susceptible to poor grounds - Read the Aaron cake grounding procedure found here
Report back if you notice anything else strange. Hope you get her sorted out.
Also, post some pictures of your car!

it does have a redone suspension consistent oil changes, new spark and coil packs, (spark and coil were done by last owner so could be “new”) no cat, the can starts up fine and will rev past 4k for a while then I’ll hit a wall where she backfires a lot and cuts power right at 4k.
I do appreciate all the advice and I’ll look into all of it just ordered a fuel filter I’ll start with fuel then spark then air then if not I’ll try regrounding
also last thing thank you! I finally got my dream car and everyone has been super nice on forums
sounds like a rotten fuel tank from sitting, all the fuel sloshing around from the spirited drive clogged up the fuel pump sock and filter with junk. the 1986 doesn't have a limp mode like the 1989-1991 models, there is literally nothing electronic that would hold your engine back with the exception of fuel cut due to overboosting if it is a turbo model. a faulty ground could also be preventing your secondary injectors from turning on properly, grounding is important on these old cars.

yeah that’s what’s it’s looking like the car runs really well then I’ll take her out to do donut's and slide around when it rains and that’s when the 4k rpm starts but it’s never consistently 4k sometimes 5 sometimes 3.5 sometimes 6 so fuel is probably the issue I’m going to get the injectors tested and drop the fuel tank when she gets lower on fuel thanks for all the advice this car has been a dream come true for me

the FC has an access port for the fuel pump under the hatch carpet, it's pretty easy to get it out and inspect the tank and fuel pump sock.
