Question Are there any negatives with venting the stock BOV to the atmosphere?

Are there any negatives with venting the stock BOV to the atmosphere? Could it throw off my A/F or anything? I was gonna just take the tub that connects it to the airbox off, and seal off the pipe with a rubber nipple.

No it wont throw off your A/F ratio...our cars have a MAP system so the amount of fuel is not affected by the actual airflow. On a MAF system like say an Eclipse GST putting on a BOV would cuase problems because the air is metered and the proper amount of fuel is added. The BOV on a MAF equipped car will mess with the air metering process.

...or something like that.

The only problem would be the fine mist of oil that will spray all over everything under the hood. It really does get pretty messy after a short while.

Did any one figure out a clever way to mount it so it doesn't do that?

Like a crank case ventilation-type filter? Will it still make that "woosh" sound?

The filter still causes an oil mist, but the mess isn't as bad...

What did you guys use to cover up the hole on the airbox? I was thinking about using a rubber nipple w/ a hose clamp.

just about anything will work. Some people have used the cap to a 2 litre bottle. I used the top to a paintball barrel holder. You can even use one of those rubber stool bottoms.

I vented my stock BOV about 1200 miles ago (last month) and It has not "oiled" my engine bay in any way, shape or form. You don't see anyone putting filters on GReddy, HKS, Blitz...BOV's??? . But I guess if the Turbos are leaking a little oil, that might happen??

I vented the BOV to atmosphere last year. Took it for a drive, realized that it bugged the **** out of me so returned it to it's original location.

They sell rubber caps at the local auto parts store in the size you need. Check the 'HELP!' section of parts. It's black and rubber so it doesn't look bad under the hood at all.

Nocab73 gave me his small K&N filter when he went with GT35/40... So, i put on to my BOV.. And you know, i recently changed to Apexi BOV (for FD), and my stock with K&N filter is louder than Apexi.. Unless I need to do something,... if anyone has suggestion, please let me know.. I know there is a tension bolt that I could tighten.. maybe that would make it louder?? I already have it at the biggest opening on the Apexi BOV>..

Haha, you guys don't like the sound of the blow off valve? Oh, and for the rubber nipple, what size should I get (3/4" iirc)?

You may get some unfiltered air into the intake tract , at idle or part throttle conditions, if the BOV is unfiltered. The BOV is usually open at vacuum conditions, but most of the time the turbo is blowing air out of it.

Nope. I drive my car everyday and I don't have to be reminded that my car has a blow off valve by hearing noises from under the hood everytime I lift off the throttle.

When i switched to an after market intake I never bothered to replumb the lines. Mine have vented to air for about 2 years now with no real oil build up in the area. I left the hoses on the out bound side ON and directed them down..so that might have something to do with it.

As far as the actual noise, I like the stockers better than any of the aftermarket ones. Some of the after market ones sound more like a squeek than a pfffssst. With my vented hood the noise gets a bit more towards the annoying side for me...but the 3' exhaust also did a lot to make the car sound different so its all good as far as Im concerned.

Yeah, the stock BOV is LOUD. I tried mine open-air vented just to see what it was like. It's a little obnoxious around town, but on the freeway it gets REAL old. You get a continual blow-off while cruising. A few hours of "whoooooooosh" and you get sick of it .

But, that's also the advantage of the stock BOV - it blows off smooth at ALL loads and transitions. Some aftermarket BOV's are more harsh, especially if you roll off the throttle.

Just tape a duck calling mouthpiece to the outlet of the valve

Yeah it is. I like the stock BOV sound But once I get polished charge pipes, stock BOV goes bye bye .

I have had mine vented for 2 yrs with no problem of oil, you should not be blowing any oil unless you have a start of a turbo problem.
