Anyone interested in fiberglass door skins. I have the drivers side done and will be doing the passanger soon. I had a request from some of the EP racers and made a batch up for them. All it is, is the door panel itself, no window frame or nothing, just the door skin. I have been selling them for $80.00...................anyone?

Oh yah, also I am making the first carbon front end for an "all motor" car......hood, headlight lids, and valance. I will post pics as soon as it is done.

Fiberglass door skins are illegal in EP. Putting those on the car moves you up to GT-3.

Sorry........selling my house, building new house....oh yah and having a baby!!! Not much going on here..hehehe.

All I have left to do is cut the holes......I am thinking of just cutting holes and leaving it up to the customer to install flanges or what ever they want. It will be to hard to mould the flanged in to the mould!!!!

 

Must be GT-3.....the main guys name is Rod...he is up in the north east....I forget exactly what state but I have shipped him a ton of fiberglass parts!!!!

 

I am doing this one because the guy is painting over the carbon......I am not vacuum bagging the parts so they are not perfect but since he is painting, he can fill the little holes that are in the parts from hand laying it up.

 

is it too hard to do the proper layup and vacuum bag process? i have read some stuff on the topic and i am thinking of doing some stuff myself... who do you recommend as a supplier?

 

It just takes alot more time thus the reason carbon parts are soooo expensive!!! On the hoods I make, the carbon runs about $100 more than the fiberglass hoods. It would take about 3-4 more hours to make it plus the cost of a decent vacuum pump. You can use a vacuum cleaner but you will have to leave the noisy thing running for an hour or so.

Do you have any docs you may be willing to share on the process?

 

Everything I do is from experience from a previous job. I have to admit, I do have one of my ex-coworkers helping me with building the molds. I dont really have any reading material....

 

hmmm i guess i'll go with the trial and error approach any tips are welcome and would be appreciated though

 

I cant stress waxing the mold enough!!!!!!! As for rolling the parts out.......use plenty of resin to begin with to get rid of the air pockets. Once it is layed up, roll the excessive resin out to lighten the part. Avoid sharp corners and remember you cant pull a part out if it has a negative draft(angles are such that the part wont come out of the mold).

 

now if ir requires a two piece design like a wing or an extractor scoop in a hood any tips?

Remember that you have to be pretty good with fiberglass to attempt wroking on CarbonFibre.

I don't see how your doing carbon with out vacume mold.... Must be bitch and a half!? You can get a vacume generator you hook up to a compressor for a fair price

 

Most of the parts I am making are flat(for the most part) and I am able to lay up the parts with no problem. I will say that the hoods do reflect the "no vacuum"!! What I mean is there are a few air bubbles here and there.

Depends on what you are talking about? Right now, the racers are making their own brackets to attach to the cars. The hood bolts to your factory hinges, I will have brackets molded into the headlight lids and valance. As for the fiberglass door panels, they remove the doors and mould these into the car.

 

Sorry Steve shoulda been more specific. I was asking about the door skins. So they cant be made semi-functional/removable? I was thinking quick swap doors for weekend races/daily drivers.

 

No, these are just the skins, no frame, latch or nothing. Just the surface of the door.
