Tranny wires are all cut up...

Im going to refrain from posting what i think of the former owner of my car and just ask my question.

I have been having idle problems and hot start problems I think may be partially contributed to by the hacked up wires coming out of the transmission...I looked in the FSM and could not find anything that showed the color of the wires coming out of the switch. I dont have any connectors so I need to know which wires go together and also where can I find info on testing the switch?

In absence of the plugs, you will have to test...

There are three switchs on a manual tranny...

Neutral safety = Grn/Blk, and Black (the black goes to ground). The wires will have continuity when the transmission is in the middle section of the H shift pattern (neutral).

5th gear = Blk/Blue, and again Black (and again Black goes to ground). To test there will be continutity between the two wires when the transmission is in 5th gear. The switch is sometimes called the "over the Top switch".

and finally
Reverse = Black/Yel and Red/green. The black/yellow is 12V+ in when the key is on. Again to test when the car is in reverse, (and the key is off) there will be continuity.

The nice thing about these switches is that you can wire them up backwards and they will still work, you just have to make sure that the correct wires are going to the correct switch, rather than the correct wires are going to the correct position on the correct switch.
