just did 900 miles in a 20b fd
i just returned from the Rotary Revolution and thought you all might find some interest in the trip.
since i am about a week from firing up my new setup Dick Lambert and i decided to take his two fds. one is a very well tuned 2 rotor rx6 and the other is an almost OEM like cym fd w a brand new Pettit street ported fd. (T66 haltech e11). the trip from wisconsin to indianapolis was 450 miles.
the 13b ran 21 mpg and the 20b 18 mpg.
we averaged over 80 miles per hour between chicago and indianapolis and Dick raced a new Mercedes AMG from about 80 to 150 along w a corvette and a dodge minivan... ( i am not kidding, Dick will race anythiing) he notched 2 wins and a draw w the Merc but was only running 5 psi. at 10 pounds the car is crazy fast and Dick is choosing to curve into it.
we split driving both cars and it was the first time i had driven a long distance on a highway w the 20b. i suspected there was a bump steer problem and it became very evident as i changed lanes and the tire traversed the crown in the road.
i was planning on just doing a bumpsteer plot but now realize i will be doing a bumpsteer adjustment. i talked at length w my old race buddy Cam Worth (Pettit) and it is a straightforward operation of doing some shimming.
you might get a kick out of the fact that there were 3 really nice 3 rotors at Rotary Revolution... Dick's, Cam Worth's (blackw silver stripes) and Mike didn't catch his last name sorry from Kansas City. Mike has a full tilt 20b w 13 b rear plates and motor mounts and a larger turbo etc... he has a 630 rwhp dyno sheet that is flat as a table top from a fairly low rpm up. there is more hp on tap. the three 20bs were out and about saturday night... we all went go karting.
it was pretty cool to see 3 3rotors ripping around.
Cam spent an hour or 2 sunday doing a bit of tuning on Dick's car w the e11 and it was quite interesting. lots of adjustability there and the engine was running like a sewing machine at the finish.
just a final note re Dick's car. i think it has the best exhaust sound of anything i have heard... it has a midpipe and a Racing Beat catback w twin tips to look like a sleeper.
i will post once i get it bumpsteered properly.

Howard, what turbo is he running? Do you know about what his hp is at 5 or 10psi? Hopefully next year we shadetree 20b wannabes

pettit dynoed the engine immediately after building and installing it. i think it made 435 rwhp at about 5 psi boost.
since the motor has a modest sized turbo T66 that flows, if i remember correctly, 68 lbs/min it should make a max of 515 rwhp. the turbo is the limiting factor on the car but i can tell you that as you get above that hp you are going to need bigger rear wheels and tires.
the car is really quick w what it has. i was following it saturday night and as dick was in 4th gear he had a bit too much pedal to the metal on the expressway and i saw both sides of the car. (it was only about 45 degrees so part of it was because of cold tires.)

ok so Howard, pettit claims that there is *NO* bumpsteer w/ their new subframes.... are you saying that is not true and it really is there?? pettit has a good reputations on the line, so id be surprized if they were mis-representing their products... hmmmm
hold the phone there, i got my subframe without spindles...this will cause bumpsteer right??....altough i spoke with cam and he also told me something about shimming , didnt understand it fully ......someone care to explain this shimming procedure

since neither Dick nor I built his 20B fd, and we haven't talked to the builder, we do not know the exact lineage of the subframe. we believe it is Pettits. i had hours of conversation w Cam during the Rotary Revolution during part of which i discussed the Toe In Bumpsteer of Dick's car.
Toe In (as opposed to Toe Out) Bumpsteer is especially bad as the loaded tire in a turn, outside front, under bump steers more and more into the turn as weight transfers onto the tire.
you want a touch (.01 to .02 of an inch of toe out per inch of bump) of Toe Out Bumpsteer.
Cam mentioned shimming.
i will look carefully at what the car has as to bump and retune accordingly. i am a bit overdue on this but have been very busy on my own car which will finally fire up 5/12.
i will post a how to etc as soon as i figure out what i am dealing w and fix it...
BTW, Dick's car does have the relocated steering arms.
as to Cam, my old racing buddy from the Racing buddy from the Runoffs, in my book I give him a 10.

Howard, if i had known who you were i would have talked your ear off! I was at RR, and on sunday I was stopping by Mr. Lambert's yellow 20B every 10 minutes to stare at it some more! I actually talked to Dick for a little bit about the car, and he told me about how he and a friend (you i assume now) drove out in both of his FDs... I also chatted with Candy for a bit about the swap in the black/silver striped car.
I was hoping I would run into you at RR to talk to you more about your thoughts on the 20B, i'm glad to see you made a thread about it. My biggest concern is the bumpsteer issue, and I'm glad to see someone with the needed knowledge is looking into fixing it.
Please post up your findings as soon as you get them!
