Question Noise in steering

My 1988 RX-7 Convertible has started making a noise (sounds something like radio static) when turning steering wheel. Car has only 20,000 original miles, and is not driven in winter except on clear, cold days to charge battery. Noise occurs with sound system off, so it is not static. Anyone elst have this problem? Is it serious, like harness rubbing?, or just annoying?

Any ideas appreciated, Thanx.

That sounds like air bubbles in the hydraulic fluid.
Is the reservoir full?
The fluid might be getting old.

NO it wouldnt be bubbles.. its a high pressure self bleeding system.. either you are low on power steering fluid or your pump is goin bad.. if it turns out to be your pump i will sell you one for $25 plus shipping..

It sounds like a bad pump. Check the belt tension too!

Thanx for ideas. Yesterday, I tried starting car, battery dead (it's been really cold, in single digits at night), so threw charger on for a while, got it started, and took it out for one hour drive. Steering noise was present, but after driving for half an hour or so, it disappeared, and it is now quiet. maybe it just needed some exercise. I'll check it out in a week or so, and see if it is still quiet.

Sounds like the fluid level is just low, the sound would dissapear when it warmed up and the fluid expands. Have you checked the level?
