Question 6-ports...airpump..backpressure?

WTF? I'm confused now, check it out. An S4 needs backpressure to open the 6port and a S5 needs an airpump to do it. Or maybe I'm wrong. I have a S5 GXL and my airpump just sits there (not sending air to the cat, but still connected to the belts) because I have a straight pipe. Does this mean my ports are never opening? Should I entirely remove the airpump? If you need it, to open the ports how does anyone with a straight pipe get them open? **** or wait a tick...is the port opening action of the airpump not related to the little fresh air line that used to run to the cat? Which would mean the airpump does 2 compleatly independant things, 1- giving air to the cat and 2- opening the ports?! I don't know, but somebody please set me straight.

They are not opening. Wire them open, or replace the connections to the airpump. If it is already disconnected, wire em open, and remove the air pump. That "fresh air pipe" is called a split air pipe, and it keeps the cat cool/clean so it does not burn up.

Damn it! It seems to me I need my airpump because I'm thinking it does 2 seperate things, and i don't need to worry about it at all. I guess my ports are opening because thte pump is still doing that part of it's job, even though it's pumping air out into nothing down there.

OK, so my ports are not opening, but if I wire them open I'll loose all kinds of torque right? and if they don't open I'll lose all kinds of high end power.? More ideas, please.

No, hold on. Here's the deal. the airpump is still connected and being driven by the belt, but the opening for the split air pipe is just open to the air, so the pump is pumping air right back out to the atmosphere. What should be done?

Ok, how do you drive? Do you shift below 3k rpm? The S5 auxillary ports open at 3580 RPM. If you do a lot of commuting or traffic driving, keep the ports working. If you drive fast, and like to use the top of the powerband, it really dosen't need the ports to close. Yes, you will loose torque. Just slip the clutch when you launch, to keep from bogging down on low rpm launches, like from a stop light. I plan on removing the actual ports when I port my intake over Spring Break. Good luck!

Man, you're all confused!
First things first. Go to www.fc3s.org and download the NA EFI chapter. Read the section on the aux port operation; it's really simple and your exhaust and the split air pipe have nothing to do with it. Make sure all the connections to the actuators are in place and you should check to see the sleeves aren't stuck. Don't wire them open; this is a half-assed way to fix any probs that will hurt low end performance.

I was right! Yeah, the air pump does 2 independant things, send air to the cat and open teh ports. SO if yuo have a S5 and you put on a straight pipe, you would want to remove teh split air pipe from teh airpump since it would not be bringing the air anywhere important, and keep the airpump in place and driven by the belt, because it will still open your ports at ~3800RPM. I had a friend watch teh linkage for teh ports while I gave it gas and sure enough they opened right around 3800. Makes me happy to know my ports have been opening all along just as they should Right, I was.
