FD w/ full exhaust vs. SS w/ Full exhaust
FD w/ full exhaust vs. SS w/ Full exhaust
hey every1,
Check out my sig...thats what my car will be by the middle of march including the soon to come stuff. I know this kid who has an '01 camaro SS, and hes got intake, full exhaust, chip, and maybe a quicker rear end. What are my chances against him saying we both launch well and dont miss shifts? Our driving skills are pretty equal imo...
lemme know,
Zach

He will destroy you...The SS's are basically the ls1 corvette engines and with an intake, exhaust, and chip, he's gotta be close to 400 HP...Without being able to up your boost (controlled) you won't beat him
A bolt-on FD vs A bolt on SS, the FD will rape it. However your car will get raped cause you still have both your cats.
You need a midpipe and downpipe and he has no shot (assuming you are equal drivers).
If he has heads/cams he will be pretty fast.
Good luck, but as TTB correctly said, "The -7- CAN'T Lose!!!"

Does the SS make a lot more power with intake and exhaust? Like most NA cars, I wouldn't think that would give you as much of a power boost as it does on a turbo rotary. And the same is true with chips. I would think that your car with intake/dp/hf cat/catback would probably win assuming it is running well otherwise and the driving is somewhat equal. Don't underestimate what it takes to get your car simply running how it is supposed to, though. Many FDs have boost problems, etc., that prevent them from runing as fast as you would expect.

yeah i'll be running 10psi of boost....dont have a controller of any sort yet and i wouldnt turn it up anyway until i get a PFC.
what do u think my FD would make power-wise, running 10psi with intake, dp, hi-flo cat, and catback?

I use to have a 97 Cobra with a full exhaust, and my Fd now can smoke that Cobra.
Anyway the 01 SS is rated around 320 I believe. The stock exhaust is pretty good on it. But if the complete system (guessing that is with headers, pipes, and cat back) it would add about 30 to 35. The chip about 20 and the intake probably about 15. The rear end would get you if he has a 4.10, which well pull like hell. But if it is 3.73 rear end it would not be pulling too much ahead of you. Anyway he is probably around 390hps, but remember his car is heavy as hell. You probably wont win, but you wont get smoked either. You need to get a DP and MP, then you have a good chance some opening a can of wope azz. Good Luck

I have a buddy that has SLP exhaust no cats, a chip, intake, and some minor other mods. Against me in my car, he tore me off the line and then i killed him from 15mph. I have pfs ecu, intake, exhaust,dp, high flow cat, and extra little things. I beat him from 15mph
i race a 2001 z28 he had intake exhaust chip i have intake exhaust ecu and............12lbs of boost.... thats the key factor..... BOOST!!!! BTW i took him off the line and took his woman with me.
I think the real key factor here is not boost but really getting that pos pre-cat outta there, and a midpipe. I think you may be able to pull even with him on the stock boost settings. with anything higher you will be seeing him in your mirrors.
I don't think people are giving it to you quite directly enough. You're still gonna be running stock boost levels with those mods you're throwing in. You will need a remap to take advantage of the power gain potentials you will have. I'd say, go with an intake, dp, catback, and either a high flow or mp and have your ecu reprogrammed for 12psi. If you go with a high flow, you will probably want to throw in a y-pipe to make up for that extra boost that a midpipe will get you. You will burn your clutch once you put that dp and high flow in. I did it with a dp and catback at 63k miles. With the setup you are going, you won't be much more than stock and if this SS has some work done to it, it will be fast. Die for MX beat one pretty well, but he's running extensive mods compared to you- 12psi remap, intake, dp, mp, catback (all over 3"), GReddy piping kit, A'PEXi bov, vacuum hoses, ACT 6 puck, 9.25lb flywheel, S-AFC, and a few other things. That remap is the key to really getting that power jump. The car's weight will drop a little bit when you get rid of stock parts and that's when the advantage becomes exponentially evident. 320hp is done with bolt-ons and a remap. You will be moving much faster than a stock SS with the power:weight ratio. The SS will take a lot more power to bring its performance up. Just remember that you will spike no matter what with full open exhaust. I would stay with a hi flow cat or get a pop off valve and full intake piping.
i raced a lightly modded SS and beat him by about a car. I pulled ahead right away then we were pretty much exactly even at the end. BTW, I'm not so good at launching and I don't think he was very good either, so we were pretty equal drivers in my eyes.

Holy ****, you are close minded.
Anyways, I dont think you guys are giving z28s enough credit. I think a FD with dp,cp, highflow is gonna get pulled hard, from any speed/gear. The fd WILL need a ecu and run 13psi to keep up. SS with those mods could easily be in 12s.
I would not put my money of the FD. SS will win no doubt.
Video it if you do!

I have to agree with you
The Ls1 Responds to bolt on mods great it also has a intake manifold made out of a metal called zytel or something along those lines It doesnt not hold heat nor does it contract / expand and so on Plus those motors have great topend intake and exhaust is only increasing the topend I really think a light modded fd does not stand a chance but then again if your going from a roll it could be a little different story but not too much
I raced an '01 SS with my FD this past fall and we stayed even. Make sure you don't under estimate him. Here's the comparisons for the race.
My car:
'93 VR Touring
Rebuilt large street port
DP, CB, Apex'i twin intakes
Stock boost level of 10-8-10
ACT street stip clutch
'01 SS
intake, full exhaust, chip, ACT clutch
He took me off the line big time, by middle of 2nd gear I was dead even with him and started to pull on him a little but couldn't walk him. That's just my experience. Hope that it helps. Laterz.

back when my car was early in my mod list i raced an ss in the exact situation you spoke of. I lost FIVE TIMES IN A ROW by one half car length from 0-150mph.
he would get me right away...and stay there...i could not pass him.
then i did a streetport and ecu and it was done...id have him by a couple cars at least.
