Mine makes that sound but it goes away when you push in the clutch pedal. Thow-out bearing?

the next thing to do would be pull the drive belts off and see if it changes. check the end play. if it realy does sound like it is coming from the rear of the engine, look behind the flywheel, how do the tension blots look? how is the oil pressure?

Can't be the throw out bearing since the whole clutch assembly was removed.

Tension bolts behind the flywheel were still tight. Oil pressure was fine still. No leaks near the back of the motor.

Also the idle noise (to me) sounds like it's coming from somewhere near the rear of the motor. If I stand in the transmission tunnel it sounds like it's coming from back there. If I stand in the front the noise is much quieter. This was with the clutch/starter/transmission all removed.

Based on 3d hearing capability, it seems to me like the 2nd noise (at 2000-4000 rpm) sounds is coming more from the front of the motor, however it gets transmitted all over the place so it's hard to say exactly. If you put your ear to anywhere on the car frame you can hear it loud and clear. It's a pretty violent noise.

2nd one sounds like a harmonic vibration. A lose nut or bolt or something of that nature.

yeah, could be, but this noise is very loud and global, its loud all over, not like an isolated rattle. ... and it is crazy loud, so it would have to be a BIG bolt loose LOL

we will keep looking.....

by the way, i removed the belt and did the test.... noise wasa still there..... water pump is not the noise maker.

im going to try to get a mechanics stethescop in there and see if we can do a better job of pin pointing where the noise is coming from.

Man that's a very odd sound.

I picture something loose getting blown around by the exhaust but can't figure out how that could happen.

It's like somewhere in the exhaust is a steel bingo ball blowin around hehe.

Of course because of the violent nature of the sound a bearing is the more likely culprit and that could obviously spell disaster. Are you shifting at 9k or what?

Could you drop off the front cover? sounds like the oil pump chain to me, I've never had one break the self tensioner on my FD but I did on my old RX3 12 Bridgeport, I know you say it sounds like it's coming from the rear but I thought I'd just let you know, good luck with it. I hate frustrating problems
Cheers

yeah the front cover is coing off tomorrow, its the only place left we didnt get into, and the rattle noise is comign from the front area, not the back, the idle knock is comign from the rear, but that is not important to me right now, the engine rattle is #1 on the list.

front cover comes off tomorrow, I am supposed to leave thursday morning for gingerman :-) .... ahh it always seems like this, major car tear down and reassembly 24 hours before a major event LOL

I LOVE IT!!!

You don't think the knock and rattle are from the same source?

Now I'm really confused. When you turn it off does it whistle LOL

I had a similar sound. I was convinced that it was something loose in the bell housing. Turned out it was just an exhaust shield. But you said you check the exhaust system... hmmm

i have the same sound sometimes as the first vid. like a mouse wispering noise and like yours its globle. but if i run the car really hard it goes aways. which tell me with heat expansion seals the gap where ever it is. I was thinking one day maybe a side seal came lose or something. I haven't seen the inside of the rotary engine infront of me so i don't even know if the seal would physically beable to get that lose to make the noise. i still havn't been able to figur it out.

Damian, you're 'da man, and I'm sure you've done this, or something similar long ago. But just in case:

Have you tried feeling for the sound (with insulated mechanic gloves of course ), and/or putting pressure/torque on things (rocking the engine/exhaust) to see if the sound changes timbre?

Like Fritz says, have you been putting pinballs in the intake again?

Heheh, we definitely did lots of that. No dice. Did find a few things rubbing here or there, but nothing making clanky noise... I'll let Damian tell you about what was under the front cover.
