US spec FD shipped to the UK (Need advice)
US spec FD shipped to the UK (Need advice)
Hello,
So it looks like I will be moving to the United kingdom early next year possibly March 2018 timeframe. I currently own a 94 Rx-7 FD that is considered to be highly modified since the Powerplant is a 20b 3 rotor. The engine and drivetrain is completely mounted and will be shipped with the car to the UK in non-running status. The plan is to get my car shipped from Florida to the UK. Then shortly after its shipped, finish the 20b Conversion, and register the car. I would like some input with the UK rx-7 community in order to figure what is needed to get my car legal in this country.
***Related areas of concern***
-Importing Process once it arrives in the UK
-Unforeseen expenses (Tax, or Surcharge)
-MOT (What's required)
-Registration (Hard or easy process)
-Which car Insurance does military personal use in the UK
-Aftermarket exhaust allowed???
-Illegal modifications etc etc..
Any advice is surely appreciated!!!

The UK is in general one of the more lenient countries, together with the Netherlands. And its one of those we commonly use to get JDM cars like the Skyline to the rest of Europe. Once the car is registered in the EU, its by default approved for any EU country. Importing an already heavily modified car tho could be a challenge. My recommendation is to import it and register it in the UK with a close to stock engine. And then drop in the 20b, after the paperwork is done.
A good person to contact would be Pip Gardner, one of the better Rotary tuners in Europe. He is located in the UK, but he is often traveling to local shops to tune rotaries.
Also, the FDUK forum is a good place to start to dig for info, but they require you to be a UK resident to get proper access.
