Moving to spain

Just wanted to say whats up, considering this will be my next lurking area for the next 3 years. I'll be moving to spain in september and will be there for 3 years. I'm thinking about brining my 1985 GLS-SE with me, but not to sure. I'd like to find a newer FD out there while i'm there but i'm not sure how bad the market is, not to mention i'd be tempted to sell me FB once i was out there for one. Anyways, just wanted to say hello and hopefully i'll meet some of you while i'm over there!

well, everything in Europe is expensive, everybody is now buying in US and importing it to EU....cars, stuff..anything....

u might make a small fortune if you buy something in states (whenever its FD or new car) ship it here and sell it in Europe once your duty will end

I'm from Spain myself, and I can tell you that it'll be almost impossible to buy a FD3S in Spain.

About importing your car from the USA better check about the importing laws as it wont be as easy as you think because of the emissions laws in Europe.

Mind you, if you could get one from the States, and sell it when you go back, you'll probably enjoy the car for free and have money to buy another one when you are back in your country.

I lived with a girl from Spain when I was stationed in Germany. Beautiful women and so much fun. I had a chance to go to Spain a couple of times and I loved it. I assume that the military will ship you car for you. It has to pass emissiones and inspections but other than that it shouldn't be a problem. Your FD will attract alot of attention. I had my 1988 GTU and I had a blast. Good luck!

I might be wrong, but I think that you can't import cars that do not comply with a new emissions standard into Spain any more.

All I'm saying is: check all the possibilities before you've actually bought the car, as I've got friends in Spain that had being trying to import a FD3S to Spain, and they said that it is 'not easy.

Hola Shiuko, cuanto tiempo, jejejeje...

Gotpam, when are you coming to Spain? We've our own RX7club in Spain, take a look if you wish to: ´

http://club-rx7.foroactivo.com/

I think that there's not problem if you bring your car with you and you can show that you've been living in your last country for more than 2 years. In this way you can bring your car with you, but I'm not absolutely sure about it.

And if you wish to get any FD in Spain, it will be a pain in the ***, cos they're very hard to see, although recently we've succesfully imported some sevens from Japan and US

Hey Victor, how are you doing?
I thought that it was only possible to import a RX7 from Europe now.
Mind you, because I'm living in the Uk, I don't now much about the regulations.
I certainly hope that I won't have any problems when I finally take my car back to Spain.

PD: Victor, en el Club RX7 español, te haces llamar Cruiser no?

Si, ese soy yo

In fact by now is as difficult to import a car to Spain from UK as if you want to import it from USA, same problem, same solutions

But a very different thing is if you are the owner of the car. That's your car and you can take it with you to Spain, no problem.

I may buy another one and sell it back in Spain in a couple of years.
See you around in the spanish forum.

Thanks for the link Victor, i'll definatly be stopping by on the site, and hopefully see you guys in spain. I'll be there at the end of september. My shipping of my car should all be handled through the military, my buddy went through the same thing last year and just had to pass emissions and an inspection. Hah....i just got my engine ported so this should be intresting.

interesting thread this.

i'm moving to spain on thursday, place olivea (sp?) near sitges...just under barcelona. will be saving up some more money and in about 3 months i'll purchase my first FD hopefully (still debating with few other cars). Will keep my car registered in the UK though, as i still 'rent' a room there in my sisters appartement , so i dont have to bother importing it.

I'll still live in the uk, car will be insured, taxed, mot'ed etc. As i still rent this room in england, i just have to let my insurance know i'm outside the uk quite a lot aswell.

edit:

will still be in the uk etc quite a lot to meet friends, and possibly with work. Basically the home in spain will be a second home!

Most insurance companies (if not all of them) only allow you to take the car abroad a set number of days.
Same applies in Spain.

Not meaning to get in an argument here, but how does it work out with the people who have for instance a house abroad and go there every summer/winter for x amount of months...

Some insurance companies are fine with it, others, like you said, only will be ok with it for a set amount of days...

believe the car has to be in the UK for atleast 182 days a year though, which is likely to happen.

I don't wanted to get in a argument either. Just saying that you should check with your insurance company because if I remember correctly, one of the companies I've used before would only allow me to take my car abroad for a maximum of 30 days.
Most of the people from England that lives in Spain, buy a second car for when they are in Spain, or just register their car in Spain if they plan to stay for more than six months at the time I suppose.
Check carefully because in case of an accident they'll try to pull out of paying with any excuses that they can find, and it's very important that you've read the small print.
Good luck, and enjoy driving your car while in Spain.
