Motec Vs. Haltech

I have a slight dilema. I've been looking at a Haltech E6X and the Motec M4 for an ECU replacement when I do my 5 speed swap. I have a few questions regarding these. My first question is which one do you think is better with pros and cons. Also with these systems do I have to pre-mix? I am really torn between the two. Another problem is actually having someone tune the systems when I do have the system installed. Any insight into which one I should buy and why would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, Haltech is no longer present in the US. Haltech has been going through some difficulties and thus moved its USA headquarters back to Australia. IMHO, the M4 will give you years of service and Motec is still in the USA for support for their systems. The E6X will not control the MOP but the new E11 will. Not sure if the M4 will but hey, give them a call because it's a toll free number here in the USA and ask a lot of questions. If I recall correctly, the M4 has been priced for which once the entire package is purchased it is comparably priced to an E11 model, ApexPFC, and several other systems. Also, the M4 has the capability to use a true wide band O2 sensor, something that my piece of crap E6K doesn't due. Hell, I'm still having trouble getting datalogs printed to file with the E6K software. IMHO, if I were to do it all over again, I would have gone Motec.

Good luck!

The race-proven M4 series is far superior to the budget E6 series. However, the M4 is more difficult to tune because of all the flexibility built into the software, the M4 will end up costing twice as much as an E6 once you add on the price of the wiring harness, and options like wideband or advanced tuning will add even more to the cost. If you can afford the M4, and you are going to have somebody else perform the initial tuning, then you should get it. Just keep in mind that Motec dealers and tuners are all big-time racers, so expect to pay a little more for their superior service and experience.

I'm not sure if any of the Florida Motec dealers take enough time away from their Porsche prototype racers in order to toy with rotary engines, so you may want to check with Mandeville Auto Tech to see who they recommend locally.

I think the MoTeC is more in the price range of the Haltech E11?
The M4 (Pro) surely blows away the E6X.

Yes, the M4 (basic ECU only) sells for about $1,600, which is about the price of the entire E11 package. Adding featues like the wiring harness, sensors, datalogging, wideband O2, etc., will add to the price of the M4. Also, the M4 is going to cost more to tune because only the top tuners know how to tune it. The good side of the M4 tuning issue is that you know you will be getting quality tuning.

Yes, the M4 would blow away the E6X. To be honest, I really don't see where the E6 series is any better than the less-expensive Microtech LT8 that has superior Windows-based software like the E11.

Ah I see. Well the thing is I only know one good Haltech tuner in my area. Chris Anderson, Crisspeed on the forum. Unfortunately hes swamped with several projects and I would be on one killer waiting list.

I currently am not aware of anyone who can tune a Motec. however I will need to tune it twice. I plan on going single turbo some time later on and hope to have 500 FWHP. But I won't have enough money to do the single turbo at the same time. So I need someone to tune the ECM for just intake and full exhaust.

Give Stephen form Cartech Tuning(954-474-5399) a call about the Motec.
I happen to love the Motec units.
I will be setting up Stephen's Honda S-2000 with the M-400 with every posiible option they offer for it including traction control, wide-band and 4-channel egt monitoring.
At first it's a bit more involved to setup but the results are always beter. The only draw back would be the additional cost for everything.

Thanks Chris, so how you been? I guess I'll go with the Motec, now I just need to be able to tune it or get a base map with just intake and exhaust.

The haltech E6k and E6X support wideband's but you will need to get the required wideband software through haltech.

For the Price the Haltech is a much more appealing unit, but a Motec is a Motec thats why they're the best.

I love my haltech(e6k) to death, but i've used up all my PWM outputs...

For the price I am willing to pay, I will go for Haltech E6X. Motec is kind of more involved and as a starter, I would not go with a Motec. I will some day when I can afford it and when I have enough experience with tuning and wanna to get deeper into the subject.

By the way, is Motec M4 compatible with all factory sensors except MAP sensor?
