Getting rid of the cats, will I need a ECU?
Hey all. I have a 1987 S4 Turbo II, I am going to be removing the emissions rats nest. I am wondering since I will be replacing the cats with a downpipe / presilencer, will I have to get a ECU. The exhaust in question is the Racing Beat Rev TII, which is a 3" exhaust. I am going to keep the stock airbox at the time being. Thanks for the help!
Yes,
When you delete the cats and open up the exhaust to allow for more flow you'll need to be able to adjust both the fuel curve as well as the wastegate duty cycle to avoid a lean overboost condition. A quality ECU with modern engine protection features is one of the best upgrades you can add to a rotary car for both performance and reliability assuming the person who tunes it knows what they're doing.
