Thicker Clutch Discs (Shimming Diff)

I've searched and I have a pretty good understanding on what I need to do ,just need opinions from people that have actually done it.Well i have a s4 LSD in my s5 NA and the diff isn't locking up well and almost feels completely open at times ,so my plan is to order the thicker clutch discs(4) and thrust washers(4)from mazdatrix.I cant afford a 2way and since im NA i dont see the reason to fork out 1200 for a na diff when im going turbo in the future anyways(not soon). But how does it compare to a 2way when it comes to lock up?Is it as easy as drifting with a welded without the tire skipping ,understeer, and excess noise?Any related info is also much appreciated thanks.

My breakaway point was mid 30s, and then I added two .17mm thicker thrust washers and it raised it to high 50s. Feels great and has yet to go open mid drift for 8 events. Most have been small second gear courses, the 15th will be a 3rd gear long banked corner test. I have not had a real 1.5 or 2 way LSD so I can not comment on that. I am more than happy with my 1 way right now.

Open up your diff first to see if your disks are actually worn. Mine looked brand new, and unless you never changed your fluid once, I bet your disks will look fine.

Thanks for the quick reply..but im a noob when it comes to you mentioning breakaway points.Obviously the high the number the more aggressive the lock up correct? Also is this with oem spec clutch disks?

Whoops! Actually didnt read your whole post thanks to my phone, but I bought this diff from a forum member so i cant really comment on the number of fluid changes...all i know is once i put it in my car with new fluid it felt horrible, it locks up super late but once it does lock up it feels pretty good..so i thought replacing both the disk and washers with thicker ones for a even faster lock up would be better all around

It should. You could go that route. Others have just tossed an extra disk in or flipped the springs. I threw some pbr cans in mine. About six strips worth. It would unlock on decel when it felt like it but that's because my noob *** did not know lsd additive actually makes it less agressive. I had a 2 way but it was based off the oe s4 style diffs. Used the same style disks and everything. Just do what you plan on but dont use the additive and you should be good to chupracabra

Yeah. Sorry about that. Some forum asshat who was bored staring at girls they'll never have sex with on the internet through coke bottle glasses felt the need to hack my **** so i deleted my photobucket. I hope it was somewhat helpful though. Good luck and have fun!

Just got an update for this,so i finally took apart my diff and ordered the parts from mazdatrix...but unfortunetly they sent me oem thrust washers and one disc(I ordered oversized). So i didnt feel like shipping the parts back and being stuck with my fc in the garage so I jus replaced the thrust washers and added the disc to stack and now my diff is completely locked...I like it but then i dont..easier to drift ,same chirp as a welded, which possibly could have ben cheaper to do..but it will work til i get a real diff thanks for all the help

Sorryyyy. But im here to thread jack you. So if I have a s4 t2 clutchtype and the plates measure at 1.77mm can I just throw another clutch plate in? And in which order? Planning on using another worn plate measuring 1.75mm. Im guessing I use the clutch disk with inner pins

So should it go
Thrust washer-spring-spring-spring-clutch plate with inner- clutch plate with inner- clutch plate with outer- lutch plate with inner?. This would put the diff at 1.46+1.73+1.76+1.76+1.76.

The stock thrust washer is 1.6mm right?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Im trying to put together a diff for almost nothing and build

Sorry the disks actually measured 1.73mm all around in one diff I have and 1.74mm in another with almost all of the thrust washers measuring at about 1.46mm.

If im correct the stock s4 t2 friction plates are actually new at 175mm... Different from what the fsm says. (2.00mm)

Ive been searching for information on the stock friction plate thicknesses for a while now so all help is greatly appreciated and I do appologize for the last post being incorrect and random

I honestly have no idea lol and I just put in them in the oem order pattern and the turbo diff order is different than the NA..just check the fsm,and i didn't measure anything since I just ended up adding the extra disk to the stack.

I pulled my stack apart(early production s4 with the longer stubs) and replaced the two thrust washers with the .1mm thicker ones. Clutches were a bit worn and both of the cone springs were noticeably worn out and should have been replaced. Mazdatrix says tii doesnt have them though, so who knows.

But somehow now the damn thing still locks up hard, hell I 3 wheel getting into the driveway in both the speed3 and rx7. With only one drive tire on the ground the rx7 can still get up, i know its bad for the diff, but ill prolly replace the clutches this winter.

Ive heard just make 2 shims out of an arizona can and throw em in and it will lock up hard... ive heard 200ft lbs to break em loose. which is good for drifting!
