Steering knuckle mod "moar angle"

Has anyone made a DIY thread on this mod. If not, I might do one for an s5 knuckle.

Derek King 06-26-08 09:56 AM

the s4 and s5 knuckles are different?

Dorifto_PG 06-26-08 11:31 AM

I actually just did this and will be selling them.

Is anyone interested?

vosko 06-26-08 11:45 AM

I'm going to be doing this is the very near future. I'm going to have a career welder weld the spindle because it is cast iron and steering parts are not the smartest to learn to weld cast on.

Hey mate,

saw your post on zt about knuckles but coudlnt reply as I am not a member...

I have some haraguchi knuckles ... though you might be interested in how he has welded his..
http://www.doadrift.com/files/images...es.preview.JPG

he has lowered them and angles them in a bit... these were mint, werent twitchy at all as i hear some people complain knuckles are.....

I had huge problems with these hitting suspension stuff (i also had supernow rack spacers)... 17x9 -7 on the front with 215/45s and the wheel would hit the swaybar up front and the lca at the back..

lol didn't even realise that. ive been asking others about there suspension setups, and everyone pretty much runs spacers, just because its easy to do.

The people at poweredbymax are considering making a set of super angle spindles for the FC. They just released a set for the S13 in the US. Here's some pics of there S13 modded spindles on this page, along with other spindle pics scattered among the thread.
http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=144069&page=47

Post up and show some interest, a few of us have already made ourselves known on wanting them made for the FC in the thread posted. Hopefully we could get em made for us by a US distributor.

Hey guys the report from the track this weekend is:

My spindles are fucking awesome. I had SO much angle and could throw my car in hotter and catch it every time. JTP and I ran some Drift Alliance Aces tandem for video footy and I led, he followed me. When we pulled into the pits he was talking about how much angle I was holding and he was running lock on his car (Mazda trix inner spacer iirc) and was pretty impressed. Then I told him that I wasn't even at lock on the steering when we were running and he pretty quickly made his mind up to get some.

I see things wrong with all those spindles that I don't like in comparison to mine, but there are 1,000 ways to do the same task, so.. yeah. I like Hariguchi's spindles the most out of all those options, but I decided not to do mine that way because it puts more leverage and shearing force on the welds when done like that.

Here are pics of my spindles:

The forces on the welds are very minimal so I am very confident that they'll never fail. Besides, the guy who welded them did an amazing job. Very very nice TIG work.

Anyways contact me if you guys are interested, its cheaper if you give me cores, of course. If I have to go to junk yards and hunt around for FCs to make these, its a big hassle. Also, you will definitely need to modify the shit out of your wheel wells to allow for clearance your wheels will need. Therefore I have considered offering different levels of modification, depending on what state of tune your car is in. Its just a matter of cutting the right amount based on your guys set up. For instance with my wheels (17x9.5 -3 235/40/17) I go to full lock and barely rub the LCA. I grinded the LCA a lil bit to clearance it, and everything is perfect now, specific to my car.

Tatakai 06-30-08 02:38 PM

*very interested*

so whats the trick with fitting wheels now? does it require wide fenders and at least +10 offset on wheels? ive got some trick slut 17x8 +35 in the front and they rub at full counter as it is =(

Dorifto_PG 06-30-08 03:54 PM

Yeah lower offset the better, cause you need to keep the inside lip away from LCA and swaybar, framerail, etc. In order to kep a good size tire up front, you'll need some wide wheels. To have wide wheels and low offset usually you're gonna need wide fenders.

backalleyracer 06-30-08 05:50 PM

i extremely want some of these, or make my own, i watched the video on zilva and seeing some of the angles they were holding, and seemed very smooth ( i know its a s13 but i have driven a lot of them too )

pm'ed

i Got that mod done. Its like no other mod! By far the best thing to do if you wanna increase the steering angle! I`ve max whats possible on a FC without DOing something with the front frame of the car. im less than 5mm away from the frame with 215/40-17 tires.
Be sure to get someone that can weld to weld it! Atleast if the car is "street-legal"

Looks like you got almost the same as me BoostinmyS5

Tatakai 07-26-08 09:41 PM

i massaged the inner frame rails to add some clearance. and i'm absolutely maxed out for a 17x9.5 up front.. had to change from the normal 17x10 to get some extra clearance.

we'll see how much it helps at rd5 Seattle Formula D.. i'm hoping i'll be able to throw it in backwards and peddle out of it..

do you have any pics of your angle?

Dorifto_PG 07-27-08 03:33 AM

Sweet JTP. That's what the call was for today, I assume? I tried to answer but I had bad service. I called back but I guess you were busy busy.

I told you soooo. It looks great, same as mine, I can tell. What inner spacers are you running now? And what offset on that 9.5? Did you just use my specs?

Sindregutt 07-27-08 04:01 AM

BoostinmyFC. what offset are you running on your wheels? I have to use BIIIG spacers with mine 17*8 rims. 17*9.5 is way to big for me up front. You probably got wider fenders than stock to? Im gonna take a pic of my angle :)

Attachment 705127This is the only pic i got.. Kinda hard to say how much i got!

CyborgRyu 07-27-08 07:39 AM

so basically chop off the piece and make it shorter? is that it? anything specific to it?

Sindregutt 07-27-08 02:19 PM

Yup, but you should make a jig for it and make sure not change any angles to the hole for the steering rod end. If you do it will get in the brake discs. Since i lowered my car we found out that we were able to change the angle some to make it further away from the brakes but youll figure that out when you look at a stock knuckle.
