S5 Turbo II LSD "differential" replacement option for street driving & slight drift

I think this side of the forum it's the best place to get a answer to my questions.
I did use the search , found a bunch of subjects related to it but nothing that answered my questions to be honest.
I have the stock S5 T2 Viscous differential in my car and when I turn and make it slide most of the time one wheel will let go.
This winter I'd like to get this taken care but there is many options and I'm a bit confused.
I've seen Tomei ( needs to get new stub shafts ) price of the diff. is around $1000.
Kaaz around $1000 also ( new stub shafts needed ? ) .
Carbonetic Deft Force . ( price ) ?
1.5 or 2 way etc.
I can probably buy a used S4 T2 differential with stub shafts for around $300 to $500.00, take a guess , put it in my car hoping it doesn't need a rebuilt or just have it rebuilt for around $300 to $500 more and be done with it or buy one of the above differential .
Either way looks like I'll throw around 1K to fix my worn out S5 TII diff. but I don't know what I should get. ( I do not want to weld solid the rear so this is not a option for me ) .
I drive around 10,000KM per summer and also like to lay some rubber down in a straight line or sideways.
I'm listening to what you have to say.

s4 t2 rebuilt is a good choice for a budget diff on a car that is driven around town more than anything else. go with an aftermarket diff if you ever plan on doing any drifting/tracking. kaaz, tomei, carbonetic, or os giken.

I was expecting a bit more feedback from you guys but it's OK I've decided to go with a KAAZ unit and I should receive it this Friday.

Still have some questions.
I'm not too sure if I re-use my own stub shaft ,change one side or replace both of them.
Is there a way to find out without having to remove the OEM spool from my car ?

So far since no one has the answer , I'll keep updating this thread so this information maybe usefull or someone else.
Spool has about 6" wide .

Where the axle fits in the spool, it's about 2.75" deep ( same on the other side ) .


Right side of the differential case .

Still not sure if I bought the right stub shaft but I've received 2 of them today with new seals.
I've put them on the spool and this looks about right.







Next will be new bearings and after I'll be ready to take everything apart to swap the old Viscous spool for the KAAZ one.

Nice. i have a Kaaz 1.5 way in my S4. I street drove the car for a while with it and it was fine. You will get some clunking noises from the rear end. This is normal because the Kaaz is a noisy unit. Mine went right into the S4, no new shafts needed, but I'm not sure on the S5.

As of Jan 23rd 2012 I don't have any updates because I'm working on a different project for the FC but I will update this thread when I'll do the swap for sure.

89 + Turbo II Viscous rear end stub shaft difference
I tried to remove the pinion but I guess I will need press because it is stuck there.
I want to replace the bearing matter of fact I want to replace all bearings since I have the diff in my hands.

I'll call Mazda to check availability & prices but I will also check into a bearing place if by any chance they can get the same exact one for less .

Not that I needed to pull the bearings from the LSD but to go shopping for replacement bearings ( if I don't buy OEM Mazda ) it can be usefull.
Also for general reference for anyone online who is working on a 86-91 Turbo II differential swap.

Updates :
So finally I gave up about sourcing replacement bearings other then OEM's.
I made a few local phone calls with all the specifications I had in hands and none had the exact same thing except 2 bearings and they were not stock , special order etc.
Mazda Canada had all of them in stock so the next day they were here.
I now have a nice stack of parts to put together.




I have sent the differential to get "fine tuned" to a shop ( Pinion height , Crush sleeve & bearings pre-load , Backlash , etc. ) so I should get it back this week.
Expensive rebuilt tho....

How did you get your rear subframe assembly, diff, and heat shields so freaking clean?
$500?!?! For just bearings? Did that include the half shafts?
BTW, how did you lower the assembly out of the car?

Yes just for the bearings.
I just remove the brake calier , ABS harness , detached the sway bar , drop the subframe on some rubber thing ( see previous pictures ) , remove the 4 nuts and hit the button "UP" on the lift and the subframe stayed right where it is.
This is a hobby garage , this garage is dedictated to the RX7 only.
I spend more time here then in my house and I love it.
I don't even have a garage I can work in.... much less a lift, a place I can leave a project car indoors, or even an engine jack I don't have to borrow. it's very saddening. When you drop an apex seal corner and you have to search there dirt, pebbles, and crumbling asphalt for two hours, you start to wish you had a nice clean floor. hehe.
So you unhooked everything with the car almost on the floor?... How did you manage to fit any wrenches in there?
