FC Power Steering Setup

Alright, so there used to be a thread some where in this place dedicated to Power Steering setups. For some reason it's MIA. There was never anything substantial in it anyways, so here is a dedicated thread to go over everyones power steering setups.

JTP - Post your setup for us newbz.

I'm wanting to switch up to a properly set up Power Steering setup. What pumps are you guys using? some say MR2 electric pump, while others say GSL-SE. I'm looking for something reliable. Also something that will work, and not suck balls like every single power steering FC i've driven.

post away

My power steering pump from my 2000 camaro z28 is pretty awesome. Really light and doesn't tire me out after 15 minutes of drifting. Had to add a real ps cooler though. :)

Only needs 2 of the 3 lines, just capped my other one off. I just cut the metal lines, put the nut over it, flared the end, and screwed it on.

I'm curious about this too. My car is a manual rack I want to remove for a ps rack.

stevensimon 03-04-12 11:54 AM

My car atm is just a de powered rack. I have an Mr2 pump that will be up and running in a month or so though. The Mr2 writeup is still on here but it wasn't too informative

Digi7ech 03-04-12 11:58 AM

Can some one post the psi for our racks and the psi the pumps you're using are at?

I'm running a manual rack and am getting tired of it.

Track_FC 03-04-12 12:54 PM

Is a manual rack really impossible to drift with? I'm debating whether or not to go PS in my LS swapped RX-7.

It's all preference. Some people like it.

i have no problems with manual rack. its more predictable than a ps rack.. ive had ps over heat multiple times in runs and it gets sketchy going from feather light steering to brick wall mid corner. at least with all manual all the time, i know what to expect.

Track_FC 03-04-12 08:42 PM

Good point stevensimon. That's a time when you want the steering to be predictable. I suppose with a manual rack with an ideal ratio it wouldn't be so bad. Which is the best manual rack to use?

Tofuman FC3S 03-05-12 09:21 AM

Electric powersteering FTW! Do want...

Problem is power steering is either RPM or wheel speed adjusted. Not a desireable quality for a drift car IMO.

Riz.

The manual rack is decent but bumpsteer will make you crash. I've had the wheel rip out of my hand from it.

That being said, I've been drifting manual rack for the last 4 years.

bewst12psi 03-05-12 05:21 PM

my FC had power steering when i bought it... I just left it in there, added a power steering cooler and run synthetic fluid. I like it

Am I an asshole for thinking that OE FC power steering works fine? I'm not competing or anything, but it's consistent, and I've driven literally 8 hours straight at events before with no breaks except to change tires and it hasn't overheated.

Maybe the problems start when you get huge angle? What's wrong with FC power steering?

I wouldn't begin to know. I've never had an FC that had a working setup. my TII came manual, and i swapped the non-assisted power rack from my old NA into it when i first started the build.

I also have a Vmount in which i can not utilize the stock pump/mounting location due to interference with my charge piping

Every single power steering FC i've ever driven never countered, and randomly did that gay ass S-Chassis random 540spin out into yonderville technique during transitions. so i'm asking because if i do this, i have to spend money, and i do not want to spend money to have my car 4 wheel slide and feel like dick. it's not bad as is, but i do want something easier finally.

Hayseed7 03-06-12 12:15 AM

Fuck that it builds muscle son.

Havoc 03-06-12 12:20 AM

I went the MR2 (spider) pump. highly recommend it.

I have a link of it working on youtube (look up mantrx7)

also a link here for more details.

I don't drift, but if you running large fronts its very worth while.

I have a factory manual rack and i like the way it feels.

But i want to get modified knuckles and i was told from a reliable source to swap in a power rack but de-power it for better angle and less bump steer

mikerbike 03-06-12 12:14 PM

^That is the correct definition of bumpsteer. Some of you are confused.

mannykiller 03-06-12 12:31 PM

MR2 Ps units are pretty hard to find these days...not impossible but people want an arm and a leg for them. I've been looking at S2000 ps pumps as well

pogi1 03-29-12 03:31 PM

yeah im curious about what set up is good. My steering feels like crap. Doesnt like to countersteer and i maaxed out the caster to try and help but nothing..i have a S4 powersteering pump and rack :[ no bueno. Did you ever figure out which ps setup worked good buckey?

S2000 have electric power steering, no pump.... It would be awesome tho to have that setup. I used to have an s2000..... Best car I have ever tracked... Awesome steering feel and input

Tofuman FC3S 04-04-12 07:50 AM

Yup, S2K or NSX would be nice... I belive the older NSX units are non-CANBUS.

Riz.

mozuhs 04-07-12 05:38 AM

interesting

Tofuman FC3S 04-10-12 02:55 PM

For like 2-3K you can get adjustable electric power steering racks for custom racing applications.

Riz.
