1st rebuild
SoI have had my car for a while now. The first build went perfect, but after a few hours on the dyno the apex seals warped. I then rebuilt it for the second time with a local builder and then took it to PFsupercars to dyno it again. On the last run the car made 421hp at 16psi, but did the same thing. The cause of the problem we think was not enough fuel out put from a supra tt pump. That is going to be changed.
I am now going to build this one myself. Im very capable and feel comforable taking the engine apart. I ordered RA super seals 3mm and a HD pinneapple gasket set. What else would I need to buy in order to rebuild my engine. BACK GRound on engine: Streetported exhaust port modded oil mods cooling mods Mazda 3mm apex seals balanced rotors new rear housing. CLiff notes: rebuilding engine because warpped seals. Just bought RA superseals and Gasket seat WHAT ELSE SHOULD I BUY. Season opener in at the end of this month and I want to start drifting. thank you, DAnny |
a.i kit
|
huh?
|
Alcohol Injection kit he means. Whos milling the rotors for the 3mm seals? And i do think you had your pump towards it's limits but dont recall what that pump was rated for.
|
Too lean. where was the timing? Ecu? Sorry if you mentioned somewhere else.

Sad to hear the FD went. You still working on the LS swap FD also? |

Sad to hear the FD went. You still working on the LS swap FD also? The first time this motor was build it received a 3mm job and the rotors where weight. Some shop in cali did the fitment. The pump that was in the car at the time of the pulls was a supraTT pump. It is rated some where in the high 400's at the engine. The car put down 421 @ 16 pounds. I have built pleanty of motors in the past "piston" and now Im getting into rebuilding my own rotary drift car. The LS1 fd is on hold til next season. I just need to know what else I should be buying in order to put this motor back together. The motor has at most 2K miles, so it should be pretty fresh and clean. An A.I. kit is definetly going to be installed and also 2 fuel pumps. The car never showed lean on the dyno, but we suspec that the seals warped because they werent being cooled down. I was also running stock OMP and premixing. We also added 100 oct to the pulls to keep it safe. What do you all think? |
Where are you getting your Water temps from in your system and what ecu are you running? And have you considered a surge tank? I feel is a great idea for drifting. Another question egt gauges. Egts would really help. Is this a short runner manifold?
|
You can look into the water jacket mod as well as cooling with plain distilled water (with additives ofcourse) instead of the standard 50/50 shit......
Do you premix or just run the standard omp? Premixing will cool the apex seals as well as oil them properly. I've looked at used housings that premixed through the life of them and used housings that just used factory omp and the premix housings looked a hell of alot better. +1 for aux injection. |

upgrade to a bosch 044 motorsports pump
on my old car when i was making 400 hp, i had a crazy fuel setup. sumped tank, sx huge external pump and full ss lines from the tanks to the rails. went that route because we had planned on making 500 to 600hp but that never happened. it is always better to have way more fuel than you need but i dont suggest going that overkill. you still running a stock trans ? not gonna last long drifting with 400hp |

So today I tried to get my KA24de in the 240, but im missing a passenger side motor mount....AAAHHHHHH! So I said fuck the 240 and started working on the 7 after sitting for a whole year. I got the motor out of the car and tore it apart. This is my first rotary rebuild and i feel 100% confident on the rebuild. Its already 10x easier than rebuilding an SR...lol . Tomorrow i will clean it and fix the port job I got from a local rx7 builder. I was a little suspec on what kind of porting i got. The inside of the ports look good, but the shape of the large street port looks iffy. i will be fixing this in the next few days. I already ordered RA super 3mm apex seals and pineapple racing heavy duty gasket set. After the initial tear down we suspected to had warped seals after a long session on the dyno at PFsupercars. The car sounded like it lost compression, but it still made 421hp @ 16psi. Well that wasnt the case. One of the apex seals actually broke at the corner and it didnt tear the engine to pieces. I drove it like that for a good month and 2 events.....What a dummy!!!
the first session at PF. This dyno session left the engine with warpped apex seals, but I still drove it for about 4 months. http://www.youtube.com/user/ballinnm.../5/q6tNKhM3iyA This was after the second rebuild with low compression and a suspec apex seal failure: http://www.youtube.com/user/ballinnm.../4/D2BifQDA_7M Second time ever drifting this 420hp horse with no powersteering, a t78, and lack of skills. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMiE2...eature=related Loading pictures on flickr of the build............. |

Took a rotary apart in less than a day. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2753/...edcd5b70ca.jpg |
That was not in any way a street port or a port at all. you got fucked over on that one.
|
Ill take pictures of the rest of the ports tomorrow. I put the pineapple racing medium streetport template against these ports and they where not even close. I know different builders do things their own way and Im not here to bash the guy that built mine. I do suspect that the ports have been extented to far up. I will check all this tomorrow. Can someone post a pic of a good streetport. Im a noob to this rebuild and i want to make sure its done correctly. Also what is the limit to how far up the port can be cut?

Nice...Ill make sure to post what I have.

I tried my hands on a little porting today. I stopped by harbor freight to pick up some sanding tools. I also found carbide bit a true value hardware store for a decent price.

looks awesome dude, I have been following the thread on Drag. I can't stand the new forum layout though.
|
it really sucks. I cant believe nobody is following this one....lol. i would at least like to know if im doing shit right from all the rotary heads...lol. Maybe is because I put this thread on the drifting forum.
|
I'll follow...
|
Yeah, I would say the drifting section was not the best choice. 3rd gen would have been better.
|
Geeze the old port job is complete a$$. Your exhaust ports look good. Make sure you have your 2mm bevel on the ports. Your intake ports look alright. I just dont like the transition on intake port Looks like the air is going to hit a wall when trying to enter into the engine.. But what can i say, im no pro.
|
It's looking I'm following up on this thread.
|
awesome. Im looking at upgrading my fuel system to a 850/1600 setup. Right now Im running a 550/1600 set up but it will be inadaquate for a high 400hp car. I havent done my searching yet, but what do you all think. whats a good set of 850's and fuel rail.
|
Today I was going to clean all the parts in a partd washer to start engine assembly and found both rotors to be in paper weight shape. This truely sucks because I has these rotors weighted and clearenced for 3mm apex seals during my first build. Im lucky that I had bought a spare engine from jeremy a while back and I took it apart today and the rotors are usuable.
The following pictures are damaged rotors from detonation. It could have came from unburt fuel in the combution chamber. Front rotor: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2732/...5a03d25bdd.jpg Rear rotor: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2745/...b8b30396ed.jpg Both rotors: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2733/...db532fab06.jpg Dont know exactly when this happend, but i suspect it was after a long dyno session at PFsupercars. The car was on the dyno for a long time and after the last pull the engine changed pitch and it had low compression. Im gonna get the other two rotors I have and installed 2mm apex seals back in. I dont want to deal with 3mm apex seals again. -Danny- |
that dent is from detonation....
and yeah those ports. wow looks like a 2 year old did it |
lol....yeah. Im pretty sure this all happen during the dyno. I will be going back to a 2mm set up. I need to find out tomorrow if RA seals is willing to take back the 3mm's I ordered last week.
|
that is by far the shittiest port work i have EVER seen in my entire life...actually i think a 2 year old can do better..lol..it look's like its coming along quite nice tho..good job man! suck's about those rotor's..such a waste. ill take them off your hand's if your going to trash them.
:AA: |
Now Im just waiting to hear back from RA seals on the return of my 3mm seals I ordered. I will be exchanging them for a set of 2mm super seals. I also gotta call ray at malloy to put in an order of 2mm corner seals and springs. So much to do before april 15th.
|
Awesome!

Don't know if you've seen a lot of solid motors assembled or not. A polished port isn't always the best. Yours definitely looks a HELL of a lot better than that other one. Looks like a solid build. Have who evers tuning it be a little more careful on the dyno this time. RA seals don't break, but they do bend.
Did you match the RA seals to the housings or did you just put them in straight out of the bag? |
Acidangle7477
I saw that. I tried to fix it a good as I could with out damaging the housings. G14novak I only polished 2 of the runners and went back and sanded them down with 600. Tunning was done with ray at PFsupercars. Its not his fault because I was running inaddaquate fuel at the time of the dyno. The 2 piece RA super seals where put in straight out of the bag. This was my first motor build and I forgot to check seal clearance. They seemed to fix perfect and motor rotates like it should. |
I havent posted in a while because no real progress was done. Today I was able to find sometime to work and finish the last few lose ends. Car runs pretty good. Ill be setting up a dyno seesion next week and see what it can do. I still have a few things to take care of, but hopefully it will be on the street by next week and drifting by the end of the month. Im super happy about being able to rag the shot out of this car after the tune.

Its taking me a long time to finish this car because customers come first. At the end of eaxh day i try to do at least one thing to the 7. Today I Got the car back on all four wheels. I used razmus spare drift wheels in the rears because we are running the same size tire and wheel specs. I used stephens BBS'eeessss on the front jus cause. Car runs and I drove it around the block. I still need a few more things to be able to get it back on the track, but its looking promising. I love the way it sounds ....brap brap brap...

My wheels came in!!! i ordered (4) 18x9.5 +12 and (2) 17x9 +12). Now I just gotta get some tires to put them on the rx7.

Awesome build, wish i could afford those wheels =P

sweet port job is it an exact thing or can anyone with decent mechanical skills do this beacause im really lookin forward to it on my next build...car looks so official on the bbs's and btw bad ass garage

Dude, I'm not a huge fan of FDs, but this is sick nasty. You may need to wash your hands after you drive becauses its so dirty! ina gud way:icon_tup: |
Well car starts but smokes like a champ. I think the port job from the last guy might be the problem. I tried fixing it by smoothing out the port but he cut into the oil control ring area a little too much thus causing a smoke cloud. I have other housings at the house and the motor will be pulled out again before the debut event on sept 19th.

this is taking a lot of my time away from my FD. Im building 3 pro am cars at the moment.
