i always spray it with motor off, and rinse off with motor running, thats how i do mine

 

You don't want to spray cold fluids on your hot motor/exhaust. You can crack things like that. Im guessing he turns it on to dry it off. Take it to the local u spray and clean it. Spay a whole bottle of wd40 over everything in the bay. Let it soak for 5 minutes then spray it off with hot water. Spray 2 cans of degreaser on it let it soak for 15 minutes and wash it off with hot pressurized hot water. ,aybe have to repeat the second step. Then spray and wipe everything down with wd and it should look pretty good.

 

just to reiterate,NEVER spray water on a engine thats up tp temp,i know you can crack blocks on piston type motors and im pretty sure its not very good on a rotary,my rule of thumb is to wait about 20-30 min. after shutting the engine off before getting a hose near it,another trick ive used is to put a washcloth over the alternator as not to saturate it with water and cause prob., of course one time i shut the hood and forgot to remove it and drove a few miles before the oh ****! moment,luckily it was still there and didnt get caught up in the belts

 

NEVER Use a pressure washer in the engine bay unless you know what the heck your doing. Pressure washers tend to make water go in places it shouldn't Just spray it down with a good degreaser (I use simplegreen mixed with water) and then let it sit, then spray it with a regular old garden hose.

There is a reason that most of the U Spray car washes that an "Engine cleaner" option have the engine cleaner set to a much lower pressure.

dont use any chemicals on a hot engine since a lot of them can cause a fire. some of the degreasing chemicals are actually more flammable than gas.

 

- do not wash your engine with the engine running.
- do not rinse your engine while its running.
- if you have open filters or BOVs that can easily get water inside you can wrap them in plastic wrap and rubber bands to seal them.
- you dont need to wrap anything else as all the electric stuff has weather seals on them. and its not like your going to be blasting water directly at them for any extended period of time. we are worried more about oil and grim in and around the engine.
- first spray the engine bay with water to get the big dirt off.
- soak it was a good All Purpose Cleaner (APC) usually about 5 minutes is fine.
- Agitate the APC with boar hair brushes, wheel woolies, and EZ detail brushes to get into all the nick and crannies.
- Rinse and see what ya got. if you have some spots you missed just spray your APC, scrub some more, and re rinse the entire area.
- you can dry the majority of the engine with a waffle weave MF towel and or use an air compressor/ shop vac to blow the water down to the under carriage.
