Sadly, misterstyx69 has passed

It is with great sadness that I must report the passing of our friend Dave (misterstyx69) on May 12th, 2018.

Dave was a grizzled old bugger from down the valley, with a joy for life and sense of humour that always put a smile on your face. He was a generous guy, always up for helping folks source parts for their projects or lending a hand. I don't know much about his past or his life, but I know that he has been a valued member of this club for over a decade and that every time I ever met him I left with a smile.

Dave's family is not holding services as per his wishes, but they say that if folks want to do something to honour his memory they invite you to make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society

Folks are welcome to post stories and pictures about him in this thread.

Cheers Dave, you will be greatly missed.

Edit: Added information about lack of services and about donations.

barnett87rx7 05-15-18 09:43 AM

Dave, was an easy going guy who had a joke for every situation. Will miss his comments on the forum.

L-Spec 05-15-18 10:05 AM

I never interacted with him directly, but you can tell with everything he posts, and everything he does, it's with care for the community. Not only the Canadian community, but the whole rotary community just had a great loss. He will certainly be missed.

Molotovman 05-15-18 10:16 AM

Man, this is a huge bummer. I truly enjoyed his jokes and attitude on the forum, he was great in the bad guy section.

Natey 05-15-18 10:17 AM

What??

Cheers to one of this forum's greatest assets. He always had a way of squashing arguments with a little joke or funny comment. Dave will be missed around here for a long time to come.

Prayers go out to his family.

Neo 05-15-18 11:14 AM

RIP Dave.. :(
We lost a good one guys... condolences to the family.

ROTRY PWR 05-15-18 11:24 AM

He will be surely missed by all those around him, he was a good friend and always brought a smile even when he was down and out.

I saw him several weeks ago and even then he was still in good spirits.

RIP Dave..

DC5Daniel 05-15-18 11:53 AM

This is horrible news...I was hoping this was some sort of joke he was playing when I saw the title.

Like many, I only knew Dave through this forum. His presence will certainly be missed...

PnoyRx7 05-15-18 02:40 PM

No way .... i was talking to him not to long ago .... he was always so helpful and eager to look for parts that could help my build.

Man this is truly a sad day.

domrx7 05-15-18 03:30 PM

I met Dave in 2013 at a meet in Ottawa and he was a very jovial and lively character but all aside was a very kind person always taking the time to wish everyone on the forum well wishes on their birthdays, Christmas etc. He was truly an asset to the Rotary community and will be missed for sure. God Bless and may he RIP.

vipernicus42 05-15-18 07:17 PM

I've edited the top post to reflect the fact that his family won't be having services, but that folks who want to may donate in his name.

Buggy 05-15-18 09:28 PM

This is sad news. I've dealt back and forth with Dave for as long as I've been on this forum. He was always there to give advise, provide a part that no one else had ( and get it shipped out asap), and the jokes/comments. He truly was a character and a great guy. I know he has been in poor health for a while now and I'm glad that is over for him. He will be greatly missed by all of us.

sa7 05-15-18 10:07 PM

As a few others have said, up until I last saw him a couple weeks ago, he was in good spirits despite what he was going through. His sense of humour, positivity, and helpfulness will definitely be missed On this forum.

RIP Dave

PinkRacer 05-16-18 11:33 AM

Such sad news.
I'm so glad I had the pleasure of meeting him in person, of chatting with him many times, and I was shocked to hear of his illness when he told me back in March.

RIP my friend. You will be missed.

distr0 05-16-18 12:36 PM

Horrible news... he had mentioned health issues before but I didn't know the details. I'd bet half of the FC's around here have a part or 2 that passed through styx's hands at some point. RIP

Alak 05-16-18 03:28 PM

This saddens me. I talked to dave back in January about getting me a wiper switch. I was just thinking about him about two weeks ago and was going to message him.

Ive met dave on several occasions. Im from Alberta but always make a point of visiting him when Im out east and have the time. Ive bought alot of parts from him and also sold alot of parts to him. Solid dude.

RIP bud.

WANKfactor 05-16-18 03:57 PM

I didnt know him apart from in here, have been umming and ahing about what to say or even if its my place to say anything, but this has come as a shock and i always had the impression he was a really good guy who always had a positive attitude, help and advice forr anyone and a joke completely out of left field for every occassion, and i just wanted to pay my respects.
Fuck cancer. RIP Mister Styx.

Terrh 05-16-18 04:06 PM

Dave was always an awesome dude. My deepest condolences to his family and fellow friends on here. He always seemed to come through with parts when I couldn't find them elsewhere, and was always ready to go grab a coffee if I happened to be up in ottawa.

10aeRX7 05-16-18 04:59 PM

This is sad i just found out. Ill miss the guy for sure as im sure many other will. Was always fun talking to him or making a deal for something. You will be missed. My condolences to his family.

got_boost 05-16-18 06:16 PM

Such a bad news to hear, he was never the one to complain about whats happening to him. Always willing to give a helping hand or some tips to fellow RX7 owners. I’ll always remember when he drove to my place to buy a exhaust with his mother, they had a bunch of aventures on their way like almost getting hit by a 53’... dude, you will be missed. Thanks for being a good person , hopefully you finally stopped suffering.https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...c9bb6ce719.pnghttps://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...07d6c15b5b.png

Relisys190 05-17-18 06:56 AM

Very sorry to hear about Dave. he was a long time member of the community. Cancer sucks.

RIP

pfsantos 05-17-18 07:54 AM

Very sad to hear of his passing. Always positive, no matter what he was going through personally.

I believe he was a line worker (on electrical towers) before his health took a turn. Met him many years ago when I did a detour on my way to Ottawa to pick up an LSD diff he was selling. Couple years ago I was looking for a rear suspension cam bolt and he just shipped them to me and refused to take money for it.

Just one of those people you meet once, but remember fondly forever. My condolences to all affected, especially his family.

RXeckless 05-17-18 08:03 AM

Heard about his passing on Facebook this morning, shocked didn't even know he was sick.
RIP Dave and my condolences to his family.
:(

Rikk 05-17-18 08:06 AM

Dave was such a good guy, he was always joking while helping other members. My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends. RIP Dave “Mystery” Styx, you will be missed

Jager 05-17-18 08:07 AM

:( I really liked that guy. RIP

pfsantos 05-17-18 09:19 AM

Last activity May 5th. Going over his last posts it becomes clearer things weren't good. So sad.

HiWire 05-17-18 07:11 PM

RIP Dave. You will be missed.

7krayziboi 05-17-18 07:20 PM

I remember when I first subscribe to this forum 5 years ago , after 6 month I forgot my account password and had to make a new account , thinking that I was a "fraud" , Mr.styx caught me right away & since than he always is a great person to deal with , many funny jokes too , will miss you my friend.

Rest In Peace :sadwavey:

Spirit-RE 05-18-18 12:13 AM

RIP Dave. You were always a pleasure to deal with, and your personality always brought a smile.

Rotor on in heaven buddy.

mazdaverx713b 05-19-18 06:58 AM

There's been discussion about Dave in the mod forum as well and the question has been asked if anyone has any pictures of him. We were talking about doing a memorial to him here on the forum and the question was asked there if anyone had any pictures of him.

djphonics 05-20-18 05:58 PM

Dave was one of the first people to reach out to me when I joined this forum. I never met him, but tried to do as he would in my forum conduct. WWDD, what would Dave Do? This is sad news. He was a genuine enthusiast who wanted to better the community, and keep us on the road as best in could. My condolences to his family and friends.

JDK 05-23-18 04:29 PM

Rest well Dave

Nick86 05-25-18 04:59 PM

Man, really sorry to hear about this, all the best to his family. Every time I drove through his town I'd keep my eyes out for him, and I probably still will.

Dave has been such a fixture in this community and as everyone has said, he will be greatly missed.

captain carnage 05-25-18 10:26 PM

Wow I really regret not making time to see him in the past month or so. He called me to tell me he was sick. He thought he had until Christmas ish from what I understood, so I thought I did too. This is really upsetting. He was always there to vouch for me and didn't hesitate to try and send me business. Im happy he was able to overcome the demons he fought in his early life.

Dave would give me parts knowing full well I'd try to sell them to make a few bucks. I was a broke teenager and he just wanted to help. Thanks for reading my long winded broken grammar rant.

FührerTüner 05-26-18 02:22 AM

Oh my fucking god. I cant believe it. RIP Styx.

MazdaMike02 06-04-18 09:58 AM

Man this is sad news...I bought so many parts from Dave..always the nicest most helpful member.
You will be missed. Fuck Cancer..
RIP Dave

Gen2n3 06-13-18 09:54 AM

Rest in peace, Dave! Thank you to the OP for posting this thread.

Cheers,
George

ScrappyDoo 06-13-18 02:05 PM

RIP Dave, logged in after a very long time. Didn't expect to see this.

silverrotor 06-22-18 06:20 PM

What a terrible thing to happen to such a great guy. He always went out of his way, no matter what the situation called for.

MyRxBad 06-24-18 12:05 PM

I haven't been on the forum in a while and find this message.
He was always a staple here at the forum and a great person.
He will be missed. I'm sure we've crossed paths at the "Ottawa Meets" we used to have

RIP

rx7racerca 06-26-18 07:27 PM

I am sorry to hear this, I didn't know Dave outside the forum, and through buying a used 7 part from him. I appreciated his helpfulness and good attitude here.

88durel 07-05-18 12:00 PM

RIP Dave, I just read this post and realized I didn't write for a long time. Thanks for all the help you gave me along the way in my build.

Aaron Cake 07-15-18 09:42 AM

Wow, that is unfortunate news. The world (and the forum) is a slightly worse off place now that he's gone.

0Cylinders 07-15-18 10:20 AM

Bummmmmer!

I had not had a chance to get to speak to Dave directly. I had only just rejoined the forums last month. In all of my forum scavenging to catch up on years of being away I was having a ball reading all of his posts. Such a witty son of a bitch, I wish I had a chance to get to know him more. It is cool to know that we here have a special part of him, I am sure he had other interests and other friends but what he did here was unique to him. We are all here to help each other to some extent and he contributed quite a lot it seems. Thanks for sharing, my condolences to his family, hopefully his Rotary stuff is being respectfully cared for.

diabolical1 08-09-18 06:32 PM

My life has a changed a lot over the last few years, and I simply don't get to log in and spend as much time on the board as I used to. I'm trying to come back more regularly, but it's hard. I'm only mentioning this because this is the first I'm hearing about this sad news and it hurts my heart that it's taken 3 months.

I never met him in person, but he and I spoke and texted each other a quite a few times on the phone - nothing regular and it pretty much stopped when my life turned downhill. I knew he was sick. He actually sort of made fun of himself about it, too. So I can attest to him being a light-hearted, jovial soul. He didn't know me from Adam, but he reached out to me a few years ago and got me to consider being a moderator - so I am a moderator because of him. He took his time to show me the ropes, and that was sort of how we developed a rapport. I can say this about him as well - he enjoyed helping others and maintaining this community. This is the very first forum I ever became a member of, and I love it for better or worse. There were times I've literally burned hours on end on here. He took it to a different level. He was completely dedicated to this place, I've seen him frustrated with things, but never once moved to real anger. He was truly a positive hand, a positive force around here ... and this is something I would gladly share with anyone about him.

This really, really sucks to hear. I am saddened. I wish comfort for his family for the days, months and years to come. And wherever you are, out there, my friend ... I wish you rotors, laughter, peace and a keyboard to share your spirit ...

Mr.Cool 12-22-18 02:48 AM

Wow, I haven't been around in quite a long time, hopped on to check up on whats been going on and saw this thread. He was a funny dude, sad to hear hes gone.

lduley 01-11-19 07:35 AM

Wow, I saw on his profile that it said retired and RIP, I thought it was something that personally happened to him and he left the forum so it was his little inside joke that he always had.

Now I feel like a douche not searching for his name and coming across this thread, as I've been absent myself due to life

RIP Dave, you were a great character, person and Mod, you will be missed
