How to cut the speed limiter on 1996 fd?
 

Hey Guys,

So I know there are a bunch of threads on cutting the speed limiter on series 6 (92-95) fds but in '96 the ECUs were changed to 16 bit and I just want to make sure I am cutting the right wire.

In this thread somebody mentioned that cutting the red and green wire works for the 16 bit ECU but as you can see from my photo there are two red and green wires... which one do I cut? I've attached a wiring diagram as well for my ECU incase that helps to answer the question.

I don't have an answer, instead I have:

I'm assuming you want to remove the speed limiter... to exceed the maximum speed. I'm praying you're going to be doign this on a track. If you're building a track car, you're going to want a PFC and once installed, the PFC eliminates the speed limiter.

I have no need for a PFC right now since I am not looking to make any more power... and yes this is for the track.

PowerFC is also a good monitoring tool if your going to the track regardless if you want more power or not. My guess is its the bottom one though lol.

There is someone here on the Can forums selling the correct PFC for you. If you want reliability, go with the PFC, plus like what Geoff and thewird said above, you practically get complete control over the engine management system including fuel cut.

Yes! Go PFC & Commander! Marco, don't you have a couple for sale? It's a great investment. Aside from it's monitoring capability, you're eventually gonna want more power, at which point you'll be really happy you made that upgrade. Really user friendly with the commander too :)

Guy asks about cutting a wire and you guys are up selling him a Power FC. Hahaha.

I don't have one for a 96 so no, not trying to sell anything. Just makes more sense.

Yeah I really don't want to get the power FC right now, it is expensive and I would have to get my car tuned after which is more money.... If I feel like I need more gauges to monitor my engine/car I can get some more gauges. I don't think the PFC would do anything for my reliability and would just end up costing ~1k.

from what i remember you cut the speedo input wire on your ecu side. its a white wire

So wire 4Q in the harness diagram above?

You don't need a tune to run a PFC. I've been running the base map on my car for over a year as I've been doing other mods along the way working towards one big tune at the end. Marco must have at least 2 or 3 different contact points from me being "almost ready" for my tune... only for me to mod more and put it off again.

Short version: base map works just fine and is "safer" than the stock ecu. It has a bit more fuel and can save your engine if you boost spike as the PFC will be able to max out the injectors.

Do as you please, but a PFC is a must-have if you're putting your car on the track.

(for the record, a PFC was the first mod I ever did on my car)

As long as the stock cat is on there, the stock base map is fine.

on my S6 it was the 1M vehicule speed sensor, so on your ecu i would try 4Q Speedometer sensor.

yeah I cut the 4Q speedometer sensor, I wont be able to test it until this summer when I go to the track but my car starts and everything else seems fine.

lol seriously going 180 on public roads means you get impounded and loose your license immediately. Not fun :(

No to start a debate or incriminate someone here. I will never belive someone who say he never try to max out is car on the highway RX7 or a mazda3. Stop fooling yourself by saying that, just because someone say its wrong to go over the speed limit , especially in toronto on the 401, where the average speed someone do is 150 ( figure of speech) if you go 1km/h over a 100 you will get a fine, you wont lose points but you'll still get the fine. Anyway next time someone tells you he hope you wont do it in the street, dont kid yourself or lie to yourself and just don't reply to the comment. Because everybody drives over the speed limit and everybody with a fast car will try to max it out no matter what, track or not. You are partially correct. Some people weight the benefits and risks, and stay below that 50 over mark. I have. at least in Ontario....

Lol don't rat yourself lol " i have. at lease In ontario" but like you say people weight the benefit and risk and when thoses condition are good... you will usually try it. I have a very good friend of mine who doesn't smoke dubees, but at lease 99% of his friends does and that guy never and will never smoke dubees, but he his in the 1%. What im trying to say if he doesn’t then he's in the 1%. Im not taking about street racing. Just yourself going for a late ride to try what your can do. Its not everybody who have access to a track to see what's the max speed of your car. Plus you won't reach the max speed on a track.
