Driving a RHD in Canada

According to JNS imports and ImportConcern it is legal to to drive RHD car in Canada but how feasible is it? I mean for one thing, you'd have to drive backwards at the drivethrough (hehe) but wouldn't it be also unsafe? I mean isn't the whole reason to pass on the left is because thats the side the driver is on? All those people passing you on the streets or hell highways. Is it a big deal or something you just get used too ('cept the drivethru lol) ?

Edit:

I ask this because i'm thinking of importing a S5 Tii down the road. They seem to be pretty rare to me. And plus low kms is a plus too.

I have a RHD Savanna... and it's not a big deal to drive around. You'll spend more time working on shifting with your left hand rather than worrying about safety issues. Placing the car in the road is tricky at 1st too though. And yeah, make sure you have a passenger for drivethroughs and parking lots .

It's legal to drive any RHD vehicle in Canada (without the "RHD vehicle" sticker) as long as it has electric turn signals.

Thumbs up

Is your car black with a large sized wing by any chance. Saw one once around the burlington area. At first I thought that there was no driver. Then I saw, cool, RHD.

Actually I wonder if it were to make more sense to just put 6k extra down and get a LHD FD. (Tii S5s will usually cost 10 - 11k to import, all fees in). That way at least I can go to parking lots and drivethrus alone :P But it wouldn't be a FC now would it...

Ya but when you import, you get a much better condition car. Unless of course you luck out. 70,000k (seems to be the average) as opposed to like 200,000kms. Plus in Japan, they are all turbo and usually have upgrades of somekind.

The disadvantages of it would simply be, try to pass on the highway without a passenger. Sometimes with one. Takes some time to get used to it. Its kind of a pain really.

Well domestic FDs will have less kms then domestic FCs. Cost to import Tii S5 FC is around 11k. FDs around Toronto area tend to start at 17k. Sure it'll have more kms then the imported FC but at least its LHD.

Actually RXcetera, how do you pass on on 2-lane roads? You wouldn't be able to see past the car. Or getting out of a parallel park with a car infront of you.

on the highway with a RHD on a two lane you have to get close to the shoulder to see past the vehicle infront of you then wait a while until the area that you cannot see will be cleared then once you know it is good go for it... I Test drove a RHD Skyline in Edmonton... and it was a bit interesting but isnt' that bad to get used to.. parralell could be tricky though.

You can get a good condition FC from japan for about $9,000.

You can get a good condition FD from japan for about $12,000.

Thats Shipping and all fees to your front door included. FD's are availiable next year as a 1991. I wouldn't recommend them because after all, it is the first year. Its like an FC and a 1/2.

That low? The prices you listed are like the base prices for the cars at JNS Imports. (The importer which I look at the most). By base price I mean without GST or the shipping from Vancouver to Toronto area (Estimated $1000). But still I know what you mean; why pay those prices for worn out domestics when you can get a fresh one from Japan. Hence why I was asking about what people thought about driving RHD here.

You'd have to wait for another year - they came out in 92 as 1993 models...that means 2007 at the earliest if they'll even let a 92 in at that point.

Yes, it's production date....

JNS and Import Concern are not the only ones that import cars. There are some importers in Ottawa as well, and they even sell theirs safetied (and cheaper), not to mention that they have a mechanic check them out before buying them (unlike the brokers). Anyone can PM me for an email address....

How about a way to convert the RHD into a LHD? Even though some people say its not a big deal, others say it is a hassle and frankly i'm worried about that. But a good quality FC is hard to pass up...Barghh...

yes production date is right. And you may be right that it's Dec 1991 for first FD although 1992 is when most of the FDs were made and that still makes it 2007 unfortunately. I mean if you can get one here and license it, then go for it...just be careful.

First production date for FD in Japan is 5th month 91....Some of these cars are still around, saw 2 this last week already..
But I have been chasing used fcs and early fds they are getting popular in Japan again, with the official end of the rx7 now, the fd even old fd that is in good condition sells for more than new cars of other makes...People are buying FC now as a `classic`.. Hard to find a good one that is not sold..
