s4 na to jdm s5 tII

hello, my name is mike and ive been building my rx7 for over a year now on a budget of zero dollars haha. Ive been interested in rx7s seince i was a kid but never had the knowlege or money to do anything about it. late 2010 i decided to go to nascar technical instatute in mooresville, NC ( its the same as uti but with nascar engines). when i got there, i found out that the school didnt teach about rotarys:(. okay now on to the car. i meet some cool people and they motivated me to get my dream car, so after a few months of looking through craigslist i found my 87 na with out a engine:). i was gonna find a s4 tII origanally but a friend talked me into a s5 ( this was the first mistake). the second mistake came right after when i ordered my engine from jspecauto{dot}com. they claim to do a compression test before shipment so i figured it would be alright. 3 months after i ordered it a rep finally called me and told me they had my engine ready to ship and it had 80 to 90 psi on all CYLINDERS:scratch:. well, i thought maybe he just didnt know what he was talking about and a real tech did the compression test. finally the engine comes in, i paid for lift gate but didnt get it. luckily i had good friends to help me haha. 3rd mistake, i didnt check the compression when i got it:banghead: i just put it in the car and started buying other parts for it. okay im done typing for now i dont feel like downloading spell check so sorry for my stupidness. now im gonna try and post some pics, maybe haha.

that is a ebay intercooler, its from godspeed, they have some stuff in the vender section. the fitment to my suprise is really good. it was very easy to install, the only problem i had was the compression tube/part on throttle body. the holes are not perfict and it took some effort to put it on. i like it though cause if it gets messed up i know i only spent $350 on it and not 1300.

RoToRhEaD722 02-07-12 01:36 PM

update!

well she finally starts up now, but wont idle on her own. i removed the BAC and all emissions and did the throttle body mod. ive been adjusting the idle screw with no luck and then it started reving on its own once i pushed it past 4k. any ideas at this point will help a ton!

hopefully this link works

I removed my BAC and after adjusting the idle screw it idles fine (after warming up of course). Have you checked for vacuum leaks?

RoToRhEaD722 02-09-12 01:52 PM

sweet

well it was a vacuum leak :weed: and it idles now. im not getting a vacuum reading on my boost gauge though. im gonna put a little silicone on my throttle body spacer tomorrow and see if that helps.
here is a short vid!

I know on my old turbo Chrysler (I know I know lol) my boost gauge would only read boost, no vacuum. I think it was because I used a vacuum source that was before the tb(?) Not sure if that would be relevant to your situation...

RoToRhEaD722 02-11-12 01:09 PM

well i got my idle down to about 1300 but still not seeing any vacuum. i have a autometer boost gauge and its pluged in after the TB and i know it works. im gonna find a smoke machine soon.

Where is the gauge plugged though? A good spot is the top nipple in the front (behind the alt/water pump).

nice work

ill give that a try!

well i striped out some threads on my water pump housing while replacing the thermostat so i had to remove it and tap it. finally put some coolant in it and let it get warm, then i noticed a lot of smoke coming from the turbo and turned it off. it looks like its just coming off the hot side and it doesnt smell like gas, i think it maybe carbon build up but i dont know! i just ordered some injector grommets from mazdatrix maybe they will help my vacuum leak, plus they need to be replaced anyway im scared of fires haha.

this video, if you can view it, is the smoke coming off the turbo. i shot this about 5 minutes after turning the car off. i just dont know if i should worry about it or let it run and get it all out.
its a really shitty video
http://www.flickr.com/photos/75346271@N06/6918050325/

also im thinking about getting a magnaflow presilencer or something to put in place of the resonated midpipe on this corksport exhaust. i live in myrtle beach and the locals and police are used to all the motor cycles and bike weeks we have, also we dont have any inspections so im not worried about getting in trouble but i would like it to be toned down just a tad! i know i should have went racing beat. i see alot of cars that have no cats, and they are loud, but they dont got shit on rotarys! haha

mxrider914 02-21-12 09:13 PM

Awesome build man! Same I did to mine...well minus the rebuild. Definitively makes me want to do a rebuild though. My Sunpro gauge doesn't read vacuum either Reads boost fine though. I thought it was just cause it was cheap but I guess not. Weird.

RoToRhEaD722 02-27-12 06:32 PM

well, i took the uim off today and replaced the injector grommets. my old ones where hard as rocks! she started right up for me and idled at about 1400 rpm (cold) but it was solid and sounded good. ill ajust the idle and check the tps tomorrow. my vacuum gauge still doesnt read vacuum  but i hooked up my brake booster and it works fine.

here is where my gauge is connected to the uim

now i need to figure out if i want to try and make this power steering work or just go for a manual rack

sideways-FC 02-27-12 09:56 PM

wow looks good man your black fc looks just like mine they look amazing in black, and I love the engine set up to:icon_tup: I wish I could be emerced in my Rx7 projects 24/7. How does the rtek7 work would I have to send my ecu out do that?

infinite7z 02-27-12 10:40 PM

really good thread! im kinda in the same boat. s5 13bt in a s4 na. Im installing a haltech this weekend to get it running.

go to digitaltuning.com, if your good at soldering you can do it your self. i sent mine in, it only took about a week, they are fast with there work.

i wanted to but i didnt want to do my first port job on this engine. as soon as i sell my four wheeler and my mazda 6 im gonna rebuild my white 88 vert. im thinking about a bridge port  i wanna hear the brap brap!
im gonna learn how to drift in my black fc so running stock ports will work for now.

sideways-FC 02-29-12 02:28 PM

hell yea stock ports will work great for drifting when its a turbo engine. and thats the main reason I would do a bridge port so I can hear that lopey idle.:)

RoToRhEaD722 03-07-12 01:49 AM

so, i finally get a vacuum reading and decided to depower my steering rack. during the test drive i found out that my cv axle is alll messed up! oh well im in the market for a t2 rear end anyway.

Man thats sweet!!

RoToRhEaD722 03-24-12 01:51 PM

small update, i got a new cv axle for cheap and did a little R&R. went for a drive and still heard the loud thud when i let off the clutch and pushed it in. after i crawled under the car again i pushed up on the front of the diff and BINGO:(. after ordering a new one from racing beat (comp stiff) i found out just how hard this thing is to replace:dammit:. i still have to finish it up tomorrow but i got some pics and a video to share.

alright this vid is just my loud ass exhaust dumping out of the resinator. now i know corksport gets a bad rap for being to loud but i honestly have to say its starting to grow on me. i just love the sound of a rotary! i havent rev'ed this past 4k cause its still not broken in but i would love to do some drifting with nothin but a down pipe!

sideways-FC 03-24-12 07:33 PM

my diff has a clunk or thud when I let off the clutch to I belive its because my diff has to much backlash. I have to build a new diff for it. that sounds awsom even with stock ports I love the sputering and loping the engine makes as it settles back to idle after you rev it its so 2 stroky! brake it in and start destroying rear tires!

RoToRhEaD722 03-27-12 02:01 PM

I need parts:
s5 fuel level sending unit
s5 sunroof motor with harness
s5 coupe rear harness (maybe)
BOV (maybe)
s5 tag lights

i still have the s4 fuel level sender and it keeps shorting out my instrument cluster fuse and the car wont idle until i replace it. no big deal i need a walbro 255 anyway.

i have a s5 vert rear harness in my car now and its wierd. i may just strip it down i only need the fuel wires and tail/tag wires but if i can get a coupe harness for the right price ill take it

the blow off valve i got off of ebay doesnt work (go figure:lol:) it has crazy heavy springs in it. i took it apart and pulled one of the springs out but i doubt it will work. its a cool twenty dollar paper wieght though or maybe something i can throw at people i dont like (honda owners:egrin:)

good news for me i put 15.7 miles on the motor yesterday, 10 of those miles i was being followed by a cop, haha. i think we were just going the same way but i didnt want to risk gitting pulled because i dont have insurince yet. i can already tell this thing will blow the doors off my mazda 6s and i havent even taken it over 4k so i am very pleased.

As for the steering rack, mine was a 14.? ratio powersteering rack that i depowered, its really not that bad. just takes some time to get used to it!

i really cant wait to start working on the vert, i wanna put a turbo motor in it but we will see what the damage is when i pull the engine (which has 274,000+ miles and still starts every time:nod:) if its nice i may just do a bridge port.

RoToRhEaD722 05-02-12 01:57 PM

well damn...

well, i got 250 miles on my rebuild:) but have been running into problems. I got a walbro 255 and s5 fuel pump assembly but the s5 assembly wont fit into my tank. ive been trying to ghetto rig the level sensor but it keeps blowing my fuse.

Any ideas to help me with my fuel level sensor will be awesome but im not to worried about it.

I also think i was having the 3500 rpm hesitation(not really sure) but i grounded the hell out of it today and didnt have any trouble. i even did my first burnout today:nod:

finally, i got a hks whooshpa and i love it. i like watching people try to figure out where the noise is coming from haha

here is a little video clip, nothing great just a 5th gear pull up to 4500 rpm and a little whooshpa at the end

HAAAAA little rotor monster!!! when is the brake in considered done?

jimmydanny 05-02-12 09:43 PM

Now I know why I saved my old broken rotor lol! Gotta talk with my friend so I can get his piston and rod, something I can learn to weld on at least! :D

Anyways, heavy build, I wish I was as lucky as you and found a (coupe) shell, not a already swapped S4 vert with S5 TII... Already rebuilt it, had it two years, put around 15k on it. Lame, I know!

DdoubleR 05-02-12 10:30 PM

looks good, makes me wan't to start a Turbo Swap.

RoToRhEaD722 05-04-12 12:54 PM

my meter fuse keeps blowing and im tired of looking through wiring diagrams! someone tell me whats wrong so i dont have to do anymore work :)

sideways-FC 05-05-12 01:17 AM

well you said you getto riged the level sender. how did you wire it?

sharingan 19 05-05-12 02:39 AM

^^^This.

RoToRhEaD722 05-07-12 01:59 PM

well i just wired the s5 level sensor to the s4 assembly. i tryed to see the the resistance spec were the same but my s4 level sensor just reads OL. now i have it completely disconnected and the fuse is still blowing. im off tomorrow so im going to try and dig through the circuts with my diagrams. i need to stop being lazy!

sideways-FC 05-07-12 03:48 PM

were is that fuse located? I dont have the cover on my fuse block that tells what fuses are what.

well this is how i started my day! I found a splice and the tape was falling off. i guess it was shorting out on my clutch pedal. before i put my dash back in i let it idle for about 15 min while i wiggle tested all the circuits. then, after i put it all back together i went for a 30 min drive still no blown fuse:) i hope that was the problem.

im still having a hesitation i think. it only happens when i try to accelerate really fast and it happens between 3200 and 4200 rpm. If i accel slowly to that rpm range it does not do it. im thinking injectors at this point! they have not be cleaned or flow tested yet

i know i need to clean up all those wires lol
