My 10th Anniversary Restoration

10 Attachment(s)
Today I decided to buy another 10AE project car. I restored one that I bought back in 06 and reluctantly sold it back in 2013. Ever since I've been longing for another. I found this one and it met the criteria. I have documentation back to the original owner, the car is accident free, mostly rust free, has a clear title, and is mostly complete. What's missing I have most in boxes that came with the car. The car was repainted years back due to flaking paint. Unfortunately it was sprayed black. Luckily nothing was cut in. The then owner did that to save the car from rusting due to flaking paint. Better than nothing if I'm being optimistic. The plan is a full restoration back to near complete stock and original form. The engine seems to turn well by hand and I can hear good compression pulses. I started reassembling the interior tonight and while I have my work cut out for me, I'm really looking forward to this one. Here are a few pics to start:

Looks like a really solid project great find! Good luck, very keen to see where this goes!

Going to start putting the car back together this week and hoping to have most of it done by the weekend. This way I can figure out exactly what I need to make it complete.

Made a small amount of progress last night. I was able to get the windows clean and you'd be surprised at how much grime cam off of them. I got the dash all bolted in and mostly together, got the driver's seat bolted down, started repairing the original MOMO shift knob/boot, and I laid out the engine harness in preparation to run them in their correct locations. Was nice that the previous owner did label some of the wiring. I need to get some pics of another TII sans the radiator and see where how wiring runs Here are a couple pics:

Nice project!

mazdaverx713b 03-31-18 05:35 AM

I was able to get most of the wiring harness routed in the engine bay and will likely finish that up in the next couple days. I did repair the original shift knob/boot combo and installed that as well. Its slowly coming together.

Jager 03-31-18 08:06 AM

I love it!

Sometimes I hate when people don't do these cars proper justice, then I see someone un-molesting (is that a thing) and a 10th AE.

mazdaverx713b 04-02-18 05:43 AM

I prefer these cars to be all original or as original and unmodified as possible. They are special cars to me and I do my best to give them the care they deserve.

A small amount of progress has been made this week. I tossed on some good tires and hot tanked the wheels. I was able to get most of the engine bay wiring placed where it goes and get the ecu plugged in. Most of the interior is back together now as well. Still have a long way to go of course but the journey thus far has been great!!

Fantastic stuff man. Glad to see another 10AE getting some love. I'll be following your progress.

Jealous of your 10AE shifter. That is the one original piece that was not with the car when I got mine. Keep up the good work!

mazdaverx713b 04-06-18 05:40 AM

I was lucky enough to get two of the original shift knob/boots with the car. The one that is on the car is in pretty good shape. The other is hardened from the sun and the seams are splitting. I do have new in the bag original 10AE floor mats from 1988 and a brand new in the bag shift knob/boot. Both were bought for my last car to be used after it was painted and the car was finished. But I ended up selling the car before that point. So, I'll use them on this car once its completely finished.

Took a couple pictures the other day and wanted to share them. It has been a slow process as I am missing so many small parts, but I do what I can with what I have. The exterior is mostly unchanged aside from lining the fenders up and bolting them down properly.

Attachment 749958

The interior is really coming together. Once I get a wiper harness I can install the cluster surround that holds the wiper and turn signal controls. I ordered a new clock/warning light bezel and I have to decide whether I',m going to replace or repair the metal dash finishing piece that hold the defrost vents. There's some rust on it and the black vinyl is peeling up. But, here's where I'm at on the interior currently:

Got some parts in from a private seller and some should come in this week at the Mazda dealer. Should start coming together quickly once I get more parts in. I now have most of the brackets I need courtesy of Joe Maddox which will be a huge help in getting things sorted in the engine bay.

fidelity101 04-19-18 04:01 PM

scammer joe?

mazdaverx713b 04-20-18 05:43 AM

Yes. He contacted me and asked me if I wanted some parts for the car. He didn't charge me a dime though I offered to pay him multiple times. I know he got a bad rap here over some engine deal but he's always been a good person towards me and I have no ill feelings towards the guy.

Spent some time in the garage yesterday afternoon and was able to get most of the wiring situated and got most of my brackets bolted in place. I finally powered the car up for the first time and it felt good to see the lights on and the cluster and warning lights come to life. Logicon is dead though. Bad solder joints I would guess. One thing at a time. Need to figure out how to route the engine harness around the emissions rack. The rack seems to make contact with the harness hold down by the oil filler neck and I am unable to bolt the rack down. This could be an issue, lol.Took a couple pics to share:

man I really wish I never sold mine,, had 23k original miles. Good luck with the restore you should have fun getting her back to original.

mazdaverx713b 04-30-18 05:34 AM

Thank you very much. And honestly that's what happened to me. I sold mine and didn't really initially feel much emotion because the guy paid me the "I don't want to sell it price" and I put the money to good use. After seeing a couple in person and seeing some on the board here and then one on Facebook in a local group, I was feeling the regret and decided to keep my eye out for another. A coworker found this one and sent me a link to it and it took a month for the seller to message me back and after that several more weeks for him to get a clear title. I just feel like it was meant to be that I ended up with the car.

FührerTüner 04-30-18 06:12 AM

Why would they paint a 10AE black. Some people.

mazdaverx713b 05-01-18 05:37 AM

The previous owner told me that his uncle had painted the car black because the paint was flaking off. Why he didn't paint it white is beyond me. The paint on the car was done poorly with nearly nothing masked off and overspray everywhere. I've been hand buffing the ovespray off of the door jambs and engine bay. Plus, since it wasn't prepped correctly or even sanded for that matter, the black paint is flaking off with the white underneath. I do keep the car in the garage however. I decided to buy the car because I figured any 10AE project that I was going to buy was going to need paint anyways and this car was straight and mostly rust free.

As soon as I get the car running and driving well, I'm going to paint it. I just want to make sure its mechanically sound first. The part that's going to give me the most trouble finding for the car is another dashboard. This one has shrunken at the top of the dash hood by the gauges. This is something I may have to live with until I can find another replacement 10AE dash.

mazdaverx713b 05-05-18 07:51 AM

The interior is very near complete. I was able to power the car up and test the lights, horn, radio, and find that the logicon is not working at all. The lights aren't even working. I'll have to look into that today. I'll be sure to post more pictures today of the progress!!

Stopped by the dealer yesterday and picked up a few parts that I had ordered in and after a couple hours of working on the car, its really finally starting to look like a complete car once again! Wanted to share a few pics of the car's progress:

Maybe you can straighten out the dash above the gauge cluster? I wonder if you carefully used a heat gun and some wood working clamps or something...

mazdaverx713b 05-10-18 05:44 AM

That's something that I would love to do. I'm considering my options. What happened was the dash top has shrunken and is pulling away from the hood. there are a few tabs so to speak on the dash cover that rest in the female portion on the dash frame. Those tabs are now on top of the dash so some serious shrinkage has happened. I have been weighing my options with the dash. Attempt to fix or replace. I thought about using some heat to get it pliable and stretching it back over the frame and gluing it down like it was originally. The car has been really sun baked unfortunately. The good news is that its not a rust bucket.

mazdaverx713b 05-15-18 05:38 AM

I managed to get the headlamp lighting squared away last night. I had one dim light and one bright light. This was due to corrosion. now the headlights are evenly bright. The front marker lights/turn signals are another story. They are hit and miss. I cleaned the bulb's contacts and cleaned the sockets themselves and they went from not working at all to working intermittently. I feel as though the issue still lies in the sockets themselves. Time to take them apart once again and see if there's anything I can do before buying another set.

i'm just finishing up a car like this (sat in a field with the hood off since 2005), and the engine harness did the same on mine. the solution was to pull it further back. my harness had a white band where the clamp on the filler neck grabs it, and this ended up slightly behind the clamp, if that makes sense. IC bracket then cleared the harness, and the AWS and Air Supply connectors reach.

we both started at the ECU end, and i think if we had gone the other way, we would not have had this problem

i have pics, but it will look like a wiring harness on an engine

have fun with the rest of it!

mazdaverx713b 05-20-18 07:20 AM

That does make sense and is great advice! I'll give that a try as I haven't tackled that portion of the car yet. I've been getting the body sorted out and checking to see what's working and what's not. I still have to get an oil metering pump and a turbo inlet duct and clamps. I ordered some original 88 injectors and a resistor box last week and I will grab a seal kit for those as well as a few gaskets that I need. I n the mean time however, I'll try and tackle that emissions rack. If you have pictures feel free to post them up. Any little bit will help. And you're right, I did start at the ecu end. Seemed logical as I was buttoning up the interior at the time but in hind sight it may have been easier to run the engine harness first and then run it through the firewall.

i only know because i did the same thing and ran into the same problem!

mazdaverx713b 05-21-18 05:36 AM

I'll be... That actually worked. I pulled the harness back so that the metal loop was no longer around the section with the white and everything kind of laid down into place. Now I need to get an intercooler bracket. Realized a few days ago that the car did not come with one.. Once that's in Things will start moving in the right direction again.

mazdaverx713b 06-02-18 07:06 AM

Not a ton new lately honestly. Waiting on a shipment of parts to come in at the dealer. Some parts were a week out. I order some oddball stuff, lol.

10AE-RX7 06-04-18 07:39 PM

Excited to see this build! My dad and I are working on light restorations to our 10AE that he's maintained pretty well since he bought it in '88! We're just looking for a bronze windshield as the current ones been cracked for over 20 years since some kids were throwing rocks around it. :/ Glad to see some people who want to keep cars like this stock!

mazdaverx713b 06-05-18 07:34 AM

Finding a windshield will be extremely tough. One of the reasons why I decided to restore this car was because the glass was good. The car will be painted anyways so I really didn't care that someone painted it black. Only going to look that much better when its done. The plan is to keep the car as stock and original as possible. I may have to bend on the exhaust as finding an original TII exhaust in good shape will be like finding a needle in a haystack. I'll only go with a Racing Beat exhaust if I cannot find an original exhaust. Best of luck with your car. If I can be of any help please let me know. Also, feel free to post your vin number in the 10AE registry I made at the top of the 2nd gen section. I've been keeping track of the 10AE's since 06.

10AE-RX7 06-05-18 02:15 PM

There's a roller 10AE in Houston about 3 hours out from me. It's sold by a guy who has his own 10AE that he's modified, and the roller's been on sale for 2 years! He's selling it $500 and I'm almost certain it has the bronze glass. I asked him to send pictures, and he said he would, but hasn't so far after a few weeks, so I gave up. I'll try again soon because I want to get the glass for my dad, and it comes with a TII rear end, which I can swap into the drift FC I'm hoping to build soon!

Haven't shared too many pictures lately so I figured I would post a couple. I ordered a brand new oem shift knob/boot for the last 10AE that I restored and decided that it will go on this car once it's painted and complete. Turns out it was the last one in existence and I paid quite a bit for it from Mazda. Worth it though.

mazdaverx713b 07-24-18 05:39 AM

I have another lot of parts on the way for the car. This car has been somewhat tough to find parts for compared to my last 10AE. Perhaps some odd parts are getting tougher to find.

TRRAPLN 07-24-18 12:24 PM

Do you have the PN for the MOMO shift knob leather handy?

mazdaverx713b 07-26-18 05:31 AM

F057-64-331 is the part number. When I bought the new one I have the Mazda dealer told me it was the last new one in the country. Perhaps there is another one out there. List price in 2010 when I bought it was $341.73. Honestly I didn't care and I bought it and a new set of 10AE floor mats as well. Those set me back $250. I still have both items sealed away waiting for this car to be completely done.

TRRAPLN 07-26-18 12:54 PM

Those are some prized components.

i found that with mine too, Mazda had just about everything.

i think FC's are going to get really rare really fast. around here everyone expects to find everything they need in the junkyard, but we are out of cars to scrap..

mazdaverx713b 09-03-18 07:42 AM

You couldn't be more right!! Mazda has been phasing out some parts that I need and I will have to get creative in finishing this car. Parts such as the hose that runs from the rear iron to the throttle body. NLA...UGH! I want this car as original as possible. I don't want to have to cap that line off. Its a bummer really, because I feel Mazda should still support these cars as they know there is a cult following for them. These cars are getting harder and harder to find in a clean and unmolested condition and its a shame because they are great cars.

NCross 09-03-18 08:18 AM

I got my TB hoses for the GTUs through Worldpac at work. They came in genuine wrappers.

Finally able to spend some time on the car yesterday and got a lot wrapped up in the engine bay. Still need to order a couple things but its coming along nicely. Upper intake will go on as soon as I figure out where two connectors go. I know where one goes and the other I'm not sure. I have so research to do to figure it out. Hoping to be able to start the engine by my birthday on November 9th. That's the new goal. Took a few pics last night to share with the group:
