Arkadyzv's TII Rx7 verty build thread
So the prequel to this is that about 5 years ago when I was 19. I bought an 88 rx7 convertible as a project car for $750. I spent the next 8 months, redoing the whole car and swapping in the whole turboII drivetrain, fixed rust, spend hours and hours on it and had over 10k into in that period of 8 months. That turd was a total money pit but I learned a lot. I basically went from just changing oil to doing just about everything, wiring, rust repair, I literally took that car apart and put it back together and it actually ran lol. Long story short, I got into some bad business and some family financial and health issues. When everything started to turn sour and I needed money quick and there was 10k of new parts sitting in the garage,so I had to part the car out.
It sat for a while without a drivetrain. At which point I got bored and decided that I should ls1 swap it once I got my finances in check. So I stripped it again and in order to do a total restoration on it. Which obviously required mucho monies and time, so that kind of went nowhere and the car, or basically a shell with just about nothing in it sat on jack stands in the garage for another 2 years. During that point I had another NA coupe that I also sold, http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...42741_3733.jpg and my modded LGT http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...ff5a2a1b_b.jpg that I also got bored with and sold and then bought the 335i which now I am also bored with and want to sell lol. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...a/IMG_9726.jpg I ended up finally selling the shell and then junking it a few months ago. It was hard to let go because of the sentimental value it had, not some gay omgg i love my carr mannn but I literally spent hundreds of hours of blood, sweat and beers on it before I even got to drive it. And the worst part was that I never got to finish it or get all the kinks worked out. The worst **** in the ass was that when it was running and driving it would cut out above 5k for no apparent reason. What I found out was that after I parted out the car and sold the motor to a friend that I had an s4 motor thus it used low imp injectors, so I bought low imp 720cc injectors. What I found out later was that the car had an 88 and half motor in it which mazda switched to high imp injectors. The only reason the car didnt run right was because of that and all it would have taken was a 50 cent resistor to fix. *blow my brains out * So about 2 months ago, I decided the bimmer bores me and I want another 7 lemon. I wanted to get a nice minty 1st gen rx7 and give the old school japanese car treatment, low, wide og wheels, fender mirrors , etc and just keep it simple. I had a bunch of 2nd gen parts still laying around so I sold a lot of them. And as luck would have it, searching through the forum one day I stumbled on this, my current project. It was a t2 swapped convertible, it was newer, but it was black on black, it had similar mods on it but it was a west coast car thus less chance of rust. It was was basically my car, the car I had and had to part out. Baby jesus gave me a second chance lol. So I sold a bunch of bmw rice, got my monies together and had it shipped over from Utah.Too bad I just sold all my 2nd gen stuff , failsauce. 1990 black on black rx7 vert S4 TII swap- motor/drivetrain/rear Tokico blues/ Tanabe GF210s Racingbeat turboback SS brakelines Rollbar Spent most of its life in Cali, so this is probably the cleanest rx7 I've ever seen underneath lol. Here are the sellers pics, I bought the car without the 17's on it, it came on painted stock bbs vert wheels. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...y/DSCN0369.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...y/DSCN0368.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...y/DSCN0367.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...y/DSCN0365.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...y/DSCN0362.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...y/DSCN0361.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...verty/back.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...1257737610.jpg |
Please excuse the ****ty phone pics, camera was dead
Got it up on the lift, changed the rear pads, changed the oil, installed the oil pedestal. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...2-11180541.jpg Fixed the trunk release and the trunk latch http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...wJersey_US.jpg Removed all the extra system wiring. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...2-12133637.jpg Removed http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...wJersey_US.jpg Interior all cleaned out, swapped the center console, cleaned up the carpets, swapped seats with less crappier seats. Installed the gauge pod with 2 gauges. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...wJersey_US.jpg Removed the stock airbox http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...wJersey_US.jpg Cheapo filter intake with sweet home made braket. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...2-12170905.jpg Ripped out the interior again to install the headunit http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s..._6404511_n.jpg All done http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s..._7136796_n.jpg |
Prosport gauges and pedestal, oil temp, oil pressure, fuel pressure, water temp and boost. Boost and oil already installed, waiting on center pod to install the rest.
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...9_338822_n.jpg Oil pan brace kit, converts the stock pan from just nuts to longer studs and nuts http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s..._4308726_n.jpg Racingbeat oil pan baffle http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s..._5868378_n.jpg Working fuel pump sender http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s..._6299630_n.jpg Alpine headunit http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...8_115859_n.jpg Mazdaspeed motor, trans and diff mount. New exhaust hangers, new fuel filter http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s..._4684849_n.jpg Broadway mirror, which will hopefully let me see better as the roll bar blocks a lot lol. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s..._5038861_n.jpg TPS adjuster tester, to fix the jumpy idle http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s..._8192699_n.jpg Personal Grinta 350 blue suede and red stich http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s..._2699759_n.jpg NRG quick release hub http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s..._5121953_n.jpg clutch slave and ss line http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s..._6585178_n.jpg Planning to install as soon as I can get more lift time. |
Things to do soon:
1 Oil pan leaks a bit, install baffle, install oil pan brace kit. 2 Install clutch slave, check clutch master, bleed clutch 3 One rear caliper seems to not be bleeding properly, replace that , bleed brakes again, they feel pretty crappy now. 4 Install steering wheel and hub, still waiting on a jdm tight Feed shift knob. 5. Swap out front strut, top bolt is mangled, keeping the Tokico blues and tanabe springs on for now. The car sits with a finger gap all around, Id rather save the money for VSXXs then waste it on coils. 6 Install all the mounts, get the car aligned, it needs it decently bad. 7 Adjust the idle, replace the fuel sender and have a working fuel gauge, still need to find out why the speedo doesent work. 8 Do basic maintenance, plugs and wires. Within the next month: 1 Buy matching shift boot, handbrake and armrest, redo parts of the door in suede, install my speakers in it. Sound deaden and insulate the interior, go through the dash and fix anything cracked and insulate that to make sure it doesent rattle anymore. 2 Get an rtek chipped ecu, already have 720cc secondaries, get a walbro, changed out the dp from a 2.5 to 3 and get a matching presilencer. Buying an fmic of a friend and doing a full stainless steel fuel systen. Car should make around 230ish on the stock turbo. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...wJersey_US.jpg 3 Was going to have the car painted in the spring but after some claybarring and some rubbing compound the paint came out decently as most of it was sun fading. I'm going to buy a nice buffer and go at it, I really think I can save it and hold off on repainting it. 4. Looking for a stock set of turbo seats, will probably keep those for a while or splurge on either sparcos, carbeaus or brides. Really want something comfy though , being 6'3 its pretty tight in the car, definitely would like to sit lower. Spring plans 1 Redo the subframe and diff bushings and all the other rubber stuff thats left, get adjustable arms and everything else needed. Probably do coils 2 Wheels, work meisters s1s or Work VSXXs probably 17s as I dont want to a kit on this. Planning to keep the car decently stock body, unless I stumble on a really nicely wide set of either wheels, at which point I'll do over fenders to fit them. 3. Swap out the injectors, clean up the engine bay, remove all the uncessary emissions crap. I'm getting polished manifolds from a friend, so have a nice engine bay. Get rid of the clutch fan, get a nice polished koyo, etc. Then put this on, 60-1 , make 350whp and just enjoy the **** out of it. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...1-28174636.jpg |
Great work!

A well thought out plan, and the resources to accomplish it....a rare combination indeed.

Plugged it back in and she started right up , but all the excess fuel didnt burn off, so now with the car off, it was smoking hookah outta the tail pipes. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...%20fuel/63.jpg hookah smoke http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...%20fuel/64.jpg hookah smoke http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...%20fuel/65.jpg All done for the night, need to check the primary rail for a leak , remount the primary coil elsewhere, put the bumper and everything back, install chipped ecu and up the boooost. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...%20fuel/66.jpg |
All done, got everything buttoned up , put back together, jumpy idle is finally fixed main culprit being a dicked tps sensor Got to keep my foglights too http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...%20fuel/67.jpg Fmic sits behind the bumper beam, no cutting of the bumper beam http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...%20fuel/68.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...%20fuel/69.jpg Halman MBC http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...%20fuel/70.jpg Changing the oil filter is going to suck ass. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...%20fuel/71.jpg Bling blang http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...%20fuel/72.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...%20fuel/73.jpg All done for now. Have a few little kinks to go over. I think one of the primary injectors is leaking as the seems to flood out but will start right up as soon as you give it a little gas. Probably will get an oil filter relocation kit as the passenger side of the car is a rats nest with all the crap there now and no ways to clean it up. Install the bigger 3in DP and presilencer, install the wideband, get an safc, do a basic tune. Swap the front struts out as they are dicked with new lowering strut tops, that will make the car sit even , 1 finger gap all around. Interior , suede some stuff, insulate/sound deaden everything, swap in the new seats after I dye them. Install newer speakers. Buy wheels, most likely Work VSXXs , get new bumpers, paint those and the hood. And it will be where I want it to be for the spring, decided to hold off on the bigger turbo and stuff as all the other areas of the car still need to be updated/restored/renewed. |
i should check build threads more often.
i used to love to drive this car. seems like it fell into good hands. |
looks great so far man. LOVE that hood
if i may make a couple suggestions. 1) relocate the battery to the passenger compartment. not too much work, and definitely worth it 2) remote mount the oil filter. even on an n/a, the benefits are unquestionably worth the price besides that, i cant think of anything you missed or otherwise disagree with i hope my vert ends up as nice as yours is on its way to being Lloyd |

I will definetely moved the oil filter over to I think the other side or maybe where the battery used to be once I moved it and then redo the lines on the fuel system and probably run them across the firewall and mout the frp on the other side as the theres just way too much stuff on one side. And pick up a koyo rad and efan. Then the only stuff to be cleaned up is the stock harness when do a haltech later on after I'm done with the suspension and the body. |
Hmmmmm subscribed. Just drove a 91 vert back from Cali to Seattle, starting my T2 build very soon....

Dash and carpets out. Going over some stuff with por15, throwing down herculiner and sound deading over it. Cleaning up all the wiring, installing newly sprayed black turboII seats. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...4-08190802.jpg Spraying the carpets and the rear panels black. Installing the cf gauge pod in the center and installing the oil temp, fuel pressure and water temp gauge. Mounting the wideband. Relocating the battery to trunk and covering a bunch of crap in suede. Got new wheels for it too. Rays Ggames. Redid the front struts, the driver side one was mangled to shit. Need to figure out why the rear struts are all loose and moving around. |
Great progress!

awesome. you're adding/fixing all the things I wanted to do with it.
with the dash out use some deodorizer on the heater core and blower. I cleaned the best I could, but still thought it was a little stinky. |
Holy Build Thread with massive pics! Looking good!

More foam. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/61Large.jpg More foam. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/62Large.jpg Did the heat vents too. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/63Large.jpg Did the heat vents too. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/64Large.jpg One of the main tabs on the top of the dash that holds the dash to the body was broken off too. Got creative with some body kit brackets I found in my box of ****. Cut them up, super glued them on and then plastic epoxied them on. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/65Large.jpg Same with even the little cracks in the dash http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/66Large.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/67Large.jpg Bottom mount of the dash had the same problem, got the same bracket, glue and epoxy treatment. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/68Large.jpg Taped off the carbon fiber pod with masking tape, measured all the holes for the hole saw. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/69Large.jpg All the borders and center marked for the drill bit http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/70Large.jpg All cut out, burnt carbon fiber smells like poo. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/71Large.jpg Test mounted the gauges in the pod. Decided to the use the sun visors on them as they will sit right in the middle of the dash under the sun. Also drilled and screwed in the mount for the single gauge cup which will hold the wideband. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/72Large.jpg |
Wideband mounted up. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/73Large.jpg Wideband mounted up. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/74Large.jpg Drilled a hole in the dash for the wiring. Drop right down the center near the rest of the gauges. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/75Large.jpg All the gauges mounted up. Boost, Fuel Pressure, Water Temp and Wideband. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/76Large.jpg Just have to figure out how to mount the pod to the dash itself, will probably use velcro for strength and also ease of removal if need be. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/77Large.jpg |
did your dash make lots of rattles when going over bumps? i'm assuming i have the same problem as you..this is my #1 problem with my car.
how hard was it to remove the dash? my car is my daily soo....i cant really go without the dash there. i like the idea of the closed cell foam. also, does your oil pedistal leak? i cant get mine to stop leaking. i dont know wtf it is. it leaks at the base...my oil pressure peaks at about 95psi. (builder did the smash regulator thing) |
Holy extensive batman!
Well done on all the work and well documented :icon_tup: Let us know how that epoxy holds up on all the little clips. |

(builder did the smash regulator thing) Dash is fairly easy to remove. All the center stuff comes out, cluster comes out. Side panels off 2 bolts on each side in the back. 3 bolts on the top under the long heater panel. 2 bolts on the sides near the center of the dash and out. I've ripped out a few dashes prior but have not done it for forever. I'd say taking it all takes maybe an hour or so working at a medium pace. But doing all the foam stuff and in general takes time. Just because you measure, you cut, you spray the glue, you let it start to dry then you apply and repeat and repeat. I'd say this is a weekend project as certain little stuff just takes too long. I think my car has been down atleast 2 weeks but I'm literally redoing everything lol. Surprisingly the pedestal does not leak, I've heard a few mention leaks but I'm good. Do you have the same pedestal? Maybe try some RTV or Hondabond or whatever, that what people use instead of gaskets when doing oil pans. I doubt that will ever leak.

The pedestal leaks probably because the o-ring doesn't fit right. RTV may not work because the oil at the pedestal is pressurized. Try a new o-ring.

i might try the rtv. i got a new gasket from prosport and it still leaked. i think i might need to put teflon tape on the extra fittings but that makes no sense because it is a tapered fit.
your thread is very inspirational to me! |
Dyed black carpet in. Light cluster used to sit in the center where the gauges now sit. Extended that. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/78Large.jpg Extended cluster http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/79Large.jpg Mounted in the back of the glovebox http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/80Large.jpg Mounted the light cluster in the glovebox. Made it sit flush the first time but unfortunately it had no room to sit like that because of the heater box so I moved it up, still decent but not as clean as it was before. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/81Large.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/82Large.jpg Glove box done http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/83Large.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/84Large.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/85Large.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/86Large.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/87Large.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/88Large.jpg |
Still surprised I remember where all that shit goes. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/87Large.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/89Large.jpg I got tired of taking pictures of everything lol and just handled business and put it all back. Here's what it looked like before I started it all. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...store/89-1.jpg Finished product. Few things still need some attention but basically 90% done and useable. Suede and red stitching shift boot, handbrake and extra padded armrest cover to that match the steering wheel. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/90Large.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/91Large.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/92Large.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...re/93Large.jpg |
super jelly. I want a black interior now.
Car looks great! let me know how the dash sound now. If you see a big improvement I will definitely have to make this a summer project. On a side note, I remember seeing a craigslist ad of the white car you have posted in the OP. i believe you were listing it with a blown coolant seal? |

Someone off the forum bought it, brought me a trans, I threw it in and they drove it away lol. Still pissed that I had to sell it lol as I I redid everything in that car as far as the brakes and the all the suspension bushings went. |
