I usually just plop a car together and then drive it..But this one is gonna most likely be the last one.
SO,I figured I should document it. 1986 Coupe with a 302 Carbed engine/T5 Trans. I'll start off with a pic of what " I am working with".The hood was cut for fitment and reference. It was crap anyways..bent and sloppy paint..lol. I am almost done the New hood...I'll post it up when I download my phone. *if you are wondering what "WUTZDAT" is..it is gonna be the License Plate on the car.. ..............................Fly by.......................zooooooom.......What's That?.................. |

2 cars. One with a 302 and grannys kit already installed. another parts car. 2 spare diffs One S5 TII engine with Transmission. 2 sets of wheels besides what was on the cars. I sold all the spare stuff and what I got left is My project. ..pretty well FREE. *Chevy doesn't make Bullit wheels..heh,heh! |
At least you put a Ford engine in it.
|
Looks identical to the built 302 that my brother put in his 94 cougar
|
So are the plans to stay carbed or fi ? I just swapped a 96 5.0 expo with gt40 heads into my 94 ranger . Wanted to go t5 but was worried about it coming apart ( non wc t5 ) . Looking forward to this build . Subscribed
|
for a weekend warrior its probably not worth the hassle to switch to FI, for a car that still has a relatively mediocre blue book.
|
It WAS EFI.
I went as far as getting all the crap to wire it up then ..ARGGGGHHH!..said screw it. Something just didn't look right to me and I knew that a Carbed engine can be hooked up with just a couple wires, fuel and exhaust. So,I took the easy way out. Easy though..Not really when you gotta factor in the height of the engine and make it fit. I got the spacer kit..(what a job that was.). The engine "can fit" under a regular hood but you'd be running without a filter. I got a Edelbrock triangular foam air filter which was about as low as I think you can go. ..BUT then I got the Big Idea of going to a Scoop..and that took another Toll on the brain cells. I kept telling people "I DON'T DO BODY WORK"..(can't stand it,I tried it,suck at it..I don't have the patience for it). Well I took it on anyways when I decided to put a Boss 429 replica scoop on the N/A aluminum hood. NOW I know why I should have stuck with my own words!..BUT!..I "read up on the Internet" and decided to do it anyways. Praise helps But honestly I do this for Myself and I made myself happy after I saw my results. It's not a Professional job but neither am I,and for not being a Bodyman,I did just fine. Like the owner it may not look pretty but it will last for a couple years and do the job..haha! *downloading IOS update and pics from my phone so pics will come Asap. |

Ok,as promised.
Here are the steps(as pics) I made to decide the final look of the hood. Pic#1 is the old scoop showing the cuts and how the engine sits..and what needed to be covered. Pic#2 is a scoop I picked out ..BUT it just didn't look right once I got it home and placed it on. Too wide, and it looks like it sags in the middle..So...Toss that shit. Pic#3...FINAL choice..Boss 429 Replica Fiberglass scoop, made by ShowcarsRob in Ontario,Canada. I had to do some trimming and I'll show you more the next thread. |

Alrighty then..lol..!
Here is the Hood scoop. I attached the scoop with angle aluminum, rivets bolts and body adhesive! You could probably place a tow hook in it and pull the car backwards and it would stay on..haha! Fiberglassed all around it,Body filled, spot puttied..put a freakin fork in it?..NOPE..had to redo the damn thing as I got Shrinkage..(and I wasn't even in the swimming pool..wtf?) YELLOW Zinc Chromate Primer..(not going to be the color of the car!). Yellow and black just for a "what if I did it this way..and I had a Yellow Mustang?? Screw that! BLACK Primer on the hood. Sprayed 2 coats of Satin Black on it. It's rattle canned, looks half decent and no tiger stripes.I love the paint I am using as the can has a double wide spray and you can cover the areas so easily and not get lines as much like some other spray can paints. *CLOKKER!..I know you'll love this!...the Grill inside the scoop is a cut portion of a Pontiac Acadian Grill...trimmed with a Dremel and body adhesived into the scoop. It was a lot of work, but Hey!..I wanted Different than the honeycomb plastic shit~! I am still not done.I am painting the scoop's inner grill "aluminum finish" .. Since I put the 2nd coat on today I focused on the front...(here we go..oh no!) I took the front bumper off and started test fitting the New Front fiberglass Bumper. Who the HELL puts those bolts way up in the corner?....Octopussy? |

Yes Jenn it is.

Ignition.
The old Duraspark ignition box changed out to a "home made/Got it off the Internet" Ignition. It uses a GM Module. It allow you to run a high voltage coil without the resistor wiring. The box was off the Rx7,I think a anti-theft thingie. It was under the dash and I had it handy. So I thought..hmm..So,I used the box to house the module and made a heat sink from a piece of 1/8 aluminum. |
Nice ignition conversion . My friends did the same to his fox . Works . Also did a single wire gm alt conversion

Update: got the front Bumper on..finalizing fitment. RE-Painted the hood..again..haha..but I went with the color of the car..Blue..Black scoop.. Turned out rather "sexsay.." Projection light kit is half installed. I need to line up basically everything on the front and figure out what to use to make the hood, bumper and lights "mold together"..like weatherstrip. Rear bumper is off..new bumper half on..doing fitment. The bumper eliminates the side molding and markers.BUT taking a look I am sure that I will end up cutting the Fiberglass and installing them on top of that area where the old lights were. That way I will retain side markers. |
Update:
wired up the 4 light system using 55 watt LO and 100 Watt HI H3 bulbs...should be impressive when I test that stuff out..haha!. I mocked up a sway bar that was "supposedly" fine to clear the oil pan on the 302..Yes it does but it is not looking right at the ends. I may go back to the Drawing board on that.May have to drop the stock bar and uses some spacing between the brackets and frame...(that is one option of many I am contemplating). I also got around to trying to slap the H Pipe on the short style headers and it got me pissed..lol..RRR!..bang,clang..ow..hit in the head with a pipe..greasy hair....low car..bang..ow..Dammit! So I "fixed that too".. BBK 1569 Long tube Headers. |
I commented on your wiring question, but I may have been late to the party. How did you end up wiring it up?
Is it anything like what I suggested, or did you find a better way? |
I did the 2 relay,..one LO and One HI deal.
LO is 55watts and HI is 100watts. I appreciated the reply but it was done by the time you posted.. Thanks immensely though..any help is great help! UPDATE:..BBK 1569 Headers Installed on the 302.. No real big problems other than the oil tube is a snot bag to attch to the Header bolt, and you need to figure out how to tighten the bolts when you can't get a socket on the bolts or get at all faces of the bolt with a wrench. Suggestion for anyone installing these headers is to Squeeze the tubes at the flange to allow you to at least turn the bolts into the head. I used ARP bolts. NOTE: BBK supplys the Header gaskets and bolts..So Do NOT order an exhaust Gasket set as it will be smaller in the ports. Another suggestion is to "love tap" on the passenger side one of the pipes that seems very close to the bell housing on the trans. It Can be installed as is BUT I whacked it with a hammer just to see some daylight on the 2 parts...not really necessary but I did it anyways. The underside looks pretty decent, and with the granny's trans mount (T5) it looks like a slight bend or "tapping the mount' to run the exhaust midpipes to the back will be needed. This will be a custom set up anyways so When I looked at the install after I did it I was really surprised that I cleared a lot of stuff under the car..Almost a straight shot From header to rear(to diff area) |
That's one thing I have run into on V8 headers with large primary tubes is they tend to forget that they need to be bolted, so they make huge primary tubes that you have to bang around to get to fit. You won't run into any flow issues with doing that, so its perfectly fine to massage them to clear.
Case in point with "massaging" headers. |
This was not that drastic.
just a quick tap to get a little dent in the metal so you could work with it..Not crimp the metal and squish it to shit so it looks like it got ran over by the EX..lol! *posted schematic in that thread.. |
Update:
I rolled the Car OUT of the garage for the First time in close to a year!.The NEW Tires have finally seen a whole Revolution..on actual Ground! I pretty well had to do this as I could not open the doors in a ten foot wide Portable garage to fully access the interior and get the doors Off..lol! So..now the Doors are OFF and sanded, apart for paint. New aftermarket skirts are trimmed and test fitted, ready to get primed and painted. Basically I am now onto the Body,to make it "look like" a car. It still needs a lot of work but I need a boost!.I figure if I can get the damn thing to at least look like a whole car then the rest of the work will be a piece of cake! |

UPDATE!!
Car is Painted and awaiting some door rubber. Body kit is ON..rear lights and spoiler are on..for now(minimal bolts),as I am tidying up back there. I cut the rear side of the bumper with a dremel and installed the rear side markers.Pic is up of that. Also a pic of the Paint on the roof around the Glass sunroof that came with the car. OH..big surprise today..the Glass guy came over to the house and installed a New Windshield..Yahooooooo! (day early!) |
All the seals and trim on these cars is a killer. How many appendages and first born children did you have to give up?
|
I kept some rubber off the old cars I had but still not the exact pieces I needed..crap.!
The door weather strip is 97 cdn a piece..It'll be here tomorrow...not bad really considering the windshield molding was 170 ..a PIECE..Each Side... Actually the windshield cost LESS to get and install than the molding was. KIDS?..nope..unless...that one time at Band Camp... |
I priced all of the trim and seals through Atkins. They are actually an hour drive from my house, but I saw the total price and asked the wife. She said no.....

Me: So.....there's this Turbo 2 with 3 transmissions, 2 engines and a ton of parts - we should buy it Him: Umm....where the hell are we going to put that? Me: I dunno, we'll figure it out. *turbo 2 gets purchased and delivered* |
By the way, locks/ignition will be in the mail at lunch time today for you. :)

what do ya think of the new body lit? |
Update:had to make a line from the Wilwood master clutch to the Tilton Hydraulic throw out bearing.
It was like shit didn't exist to make this Transition as one was bigger than the other.. I went to 4 stores trying to get adapters/couplers and all had something different but not what I needed. I went home and dug into the Shed..YES..My Trusty Shed!.. POOF!..the heavens opened up and handed me my old external slave and pieces to get the job done. Today I had my Lady friend come over and Pump up the Jam..lol!..I mean the clutch while I bled the lines and found out rather quickly that you should NEVER leave a line loose on the Hydraulic Bearing..INSIDE the trans! Thank Felix..(GOD) that I was able to get my mitts in and get the line tightened. Clutch now works and is so freaking Springy that IF you do not keep some kind of physical resistance on it when letting it out you could end up with you knee in your face! It is a lot more harder to get to the floor than the old 30 year old Wankel stuff..So it may take some getting used to. I was really surprised at the feel.I thought: Weird.. the clutch only went down like 2 inches and stopped??.NOPE!.That is where the clutch starts to engage and holy Crap!,I thought It was like manual brakes!..then felt some springiness to it and Pressed the clutch to the floor...Yay!!!(Thank you Lord..it has resistance!) All in all,I had a good day(for once) and got some stuff done to keep the project on the go. Tomorrow?..wiring.(This should be fun!) |
Update:Wired in the E-Fan and I am using a thermoswitch to turn on the fan at 175.
I had to buy the damn thing as I "thought" I didn't have one on the old 302 manifold..but guess what?..YEP!..I found one later in the evening AFTER I had ordered one..Say DUH..lol! Anyhow I put BOTH in and since I am not sure exactly at what temp the engine will be happy at I at least can swap the wire to the other Thermoswitch If need be..(or just create a switch control to manual bypass the thermoswitch). I wire up the car enough today to actually ROLL the ENGINE OVER!..YAY! Bonus points!: I wired the stereo in for power and got a "sneak peak" at the sound of the Stereo setup!....What?..can't hear ya..!..lol! |

Start up Video..just add whine.
Because it's a Cheesy video..hahhaha!
Here ya go! |
For anyone wondering,I use a low pressure pump on the stock harness, not knowing What it would do.I figured I would deal with it when I can around to trying to start it.(testing voltage, going through wiring etc,etc,etc..Which I was dreading!)
Turns out I didn't have to do anything at all.The car started up. |
Cool.
What low pressure pump did you use? I put a FC tank in the Z, specifically to delete the external (infernally noisy) pump and found it difficult to source an in-tank unit that ran at 6-10psi (our Holley wants 6psi at the inlet). |
Just found this thread. Lookin good styx. sub'd
|
I dig the rotor shaped key and the tunes. Well done.
|
Honestly I asked the Parts guy to get me a low pressure in tank pump and told him what it was for(Mustang 302..Capri type fuel system..blah,blah..)..and Voila...he gave me a pump.
IF I can find the paper work I'll post the name and part number but frankly I had a lot of bills/receipts that just piled up and I tossed them..they cluttered up the front seat of the van..lol! I'm having fun sorting out wiring and lighting right now.All outside lights EXCEPT the 2 front side markers and the Passenger bumper "park light" work.(signal works though). Missing fuses kind of make things not light up! I got the oil, temp and voltage gauges set in a idiot pod on top of the dash. Fuel gauge works. The stock voltage gauge reads voltage too. I haven't tried to see if I can get RPM on the Stock tach to work off the V8 yet.(I know that pesky wire..been there before.) *car goes in for exhaust piping on Monday. |
Crunch time!
Ok guys,I think I got stuff ironed out!
I am scheduled to get a Safety inspection on Tuesday. Wish me luck! |

Meh...stupid shit..!
I had to get CATS put on the exhaust as he stated that the car came with Cats I argued the car came with NOTHING..LOL!..as it had NO Engine!..NO Trans..NO Exhaust!.. I lost that argument..Shit!,shit!,Shit! anyhow, more minor stuff that needed to be addressed is being done and Hopefully by Friday it will scream down the roads of Ontario..! |
Mechanic got picky about the Brake lines..Lucky I had a Whole set, front to back in my Trusty parts shed.
He busted the line at the Distribution block..SHIT!,and I had JUST SOLD the one that the lines has on it! Luckily,Again,my shed had a spare block,so back in business. The starter made some funny noises..hmm?..Wtf?..it broke BOTH ears off it!It was just sitting there in the hole and it was a miracle that it started at all! So,replacement starter and then the Elusive Special starter bolts(not just normal bolts). It appears that the bolts used gave the starter some play and would not sit Solidly in the hole, hence the damage.Ring gear is OK! Driveshaft had ZERO play so I had to bring it to the Driveshaft guy and get 3/4 of an inch chopped off it or it would have eaten the rear trans seal. Happy Canada Day...(gaddamn holidays..shop is closed til Tuesday)..I can't win! |
