Scary when you think about it... I don't care what anyone says I feel a car is much more enjoyable when you did all the work on it with your bare hands. On top of that you save TONS of money at the same time!

trochoid 10-12-06 11:48 PM

Yep, to me, that is the whole point of the project. You lucked out and found a good body already done, now you can spend more on the rest of the upgrades, and doing one hell of a fine I might add.

Jozay721 10-13-06 09:03 PM

thats y i wanna rebuild my engine, i wanna fire that baby up and feel happy i did it, nice work by the way trochoid.

trochoid 10-13-06 10:00 PM

Thanks, there is a great deal of satisfaction doing it with one's own hands, even moreso when it's successful and admired. The looks and thumbs up I get driving it around is a great ego boost. Should be even more fun after the TII swap.

Jozay721 10-14-06 12:13 PM

what made u want to do the engine paint geen and grey??im not hating, i love the two colors.

trochoid 10-14-06 06:15 PM

It was the 2nd engine and powdercoating. The green is a candy teal.

Jozay721 10-14-06 07:37 PM

o thats cool, i dont know what i wanna do for mine, but youve given me some ideas.i love ur car trochoid, it makes me want to do more:)

This amazes me even more, especially considering my second thoughts about even rebuilding the Nikki! Very admirable T.

roarinrotaryrx7 12-10-06 04:54 PM

Needs wider rims and tires

trochoid 12-10-06 05:36 PM

15X9 and 15X10s are coming, that big enough for you?

Dayummm Luiml, that is one sweet looking ride. You have more pics of that?

twinkletoes 04-23-07 02:34 PM

rich^ dan threw the tires under the car to show us what it would look like. I fyou look at the left rear wheel, theres no wheels.

Dan_s_young 04-23-07 07:43 PM

Heres a link with more about my car. I should really update the thread with more pictures.

https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/parts-really-coming-together-widebody-project-update-575526/

I still haven't mounted the rear tires because i'm getting a 8.8" setup out back, then figuring out what i'm going to do for rear brakes. Then taking custom measurements to get the rear rims to fit the best they can.

I should also mention that Luiml parted out his car :( the only good thing that came out of that is I got alot of his parts for my car. But its truely a shame, his car really inspired me with my build.

MikeFB 05-12-07 10:54 PM

I love it.

I remember when those widebody kits came out. I had a 260z in highschool, and half my time in class was spent drooling over the Bob Sharp Z catalog, wishing I could afford to rebody my sad looking Z.

One weekend riding in a friend's Roadrunner we saw an RX-7 with a real similar look to yours, only it was blue with gold mesh wheels. It was loud, low and mean looking. I pointed it out, and my friend tried to get up next to it to see if he would race. We finally got next to him, and both slowed to about 10 mph. My friend had the near stock 383 (headers, rejet for the avs, electronic ign, open element air cleaner) in his RR at the time, but we figured it could handle this car. We were wrong. Both cars spun, the RR jumped maybe a car length after 2nd gear, then the 7 reeled us in and passed us, putting maybe half a car on us by the end.

We pulled along side, I congratulated him, asked what engine he had. When he told me "70 cubic inches", I was pretty impressed. My buddy didn't believe him, figured he had to have nitrous/turbo/nuclear gerbils.

This was 1986, that '68 RR ran high 13's with that 383 on street tires. I guess from that point on I had respect for rotaries, but lack of knowledge of them and peer pressure of all my mopar buddies kept me from trying one.

trochoid 05-12-07 11:32 PM

LOL, thanks for those memories. I grew up in Lincoln and had 71 383 Road Runner. Never did go up against a rotary with it but beat most every other RR in town, until I pulled up next to a built GTX 6-Pack one day.

MikeFB 05-13-07 01:22 AM

This was in Lincoln. What years did you have your RR?

trochoid 05-13-07 07:35 AM

73-75 Spent most of my time on 'O' street. Street races were very common back then and I could cruise 'O' all night for 5 bucks worth of gas.

Had a friend that built VWs, His would keep up with me from 15 to 60 mph on a step down.

MikeFB 05-13-07 10:05 AM

Was going to ask if you knew any of the Lincoln moparheads, but thats a little too far back. A friend had a '69 GTX at age 15 in '77, that's about as far back as any of my friends go.

I started with the mopars about a year after high school in '88, sold my rusted out Z and bought a '70 Charger R/T for $1100. Every time I look at ebay today, I wish i'd kept that car and alot of others that followed. My favorite was a '67 cuda fastback I had from '90-94. Very mild 440, TF with manual valve body, 3.91 8 3/4, 9x28 m/t tires. Ran on 91 octane, ran a best of 11.86 @ 115.6 with some fiberglass parts. I had like $3500 in the whole car, was beating guys with more than that in their engines

shanx143 07-12-07 06:11 PM

were can i find a body kit like that?

Kalvano 07-12-07 07:18 PM

hey where'd you get that intake manifold it's awesome

what kind of carb are you using?

Dan_s_young 07-12-07 07:33 PM

Body kit was through CPracing, they are now closed. It is now available through Blackdragon auto.

Intake manifold is a pretty common one piece design, Robert (rotaryshack) carries them and I believe they were on ebay for a cheap buy it now price recently. The carb is a mukuni 44 phh like he said...

Jeezus 07-12-07 07:34 PM

you can get the manifold from
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=667592

and I think the carb is a weber 48? I am judging from the half street and half bridge set up...

EDIT: Dan beat me :(

Intake mani is the same one listed in the eBay listing, and that's a good price for a new one. Carb is a Mikuni 44 PHH, which is too small for a 1/2 bp. Engine is now sporting Weber DCDs.

Found both the intake and carb in a private junkyard.

Chiron 07-14-07 12:38 PM

Generally I don't like body kits. But this looks amazing. Excellent work. In your title you say its a 12a. Are you planning on upgrading? Or just adding boost?

trochoid 07-14-07 12:47 PM

Both. :)

jgrts20 07-14-07 01:28 PM

Nice job, what paint is that?

TOMMKATT_SE 12-31-07 10:10 AM

Nice job! Car looks awsome! Being around you age and having done countless rebuilds, I can appreciate all the time and hard work that went into that. Hope to get time to start working on mine soon.

Jimbo II 01-30-08 11:29 PM

nick812 01-30-08 11:39 PM

Percentage 01-31-08 12:24 PM

Not my style, but it looks very well done. Good Job Trochoid. :)

kgray 01-31-08 03:17 PM

mkrommes 07-01-08 04:13 PM

thats a nasty looking car - looks like it eats babies lol- great work keep it up, hope to get my 7 that nice soon

rotarydude 10-12-09 11:37 PM

Now that the car is for sale maybe you should post some newer pics of the later mods you did, none the less at least the thread is back from the dead

JunpoweR 10-30-09 03:24 AM

I have a 83 with the same body kit and some nice wheels but the fronts don't fit right.
I am running a 88 TII motor.

food7373 10-30-09 05:55 AM

very nice, i like it. ^

Dan_s_young 10-30-09 06:24 AM

I really like the silver! What size are your back tires/rims they could be a bit wider too.

With my 17x12" ccws and 315/35/17 i'm still almost tempted to go slightly bigger.

In the front 17x10" with 255/40/17 is also looks slightly too small with my respeed camber plates, but I wouldn't want to push the limits with this kit. I don't think the fiberglass would take much of a hit from the tire before taking some big damage.

trochoid 11-02-09 04:48 PM

After 4 years this thread gets moved to the Non-Tech section, what gives? If the widebody build isn't a Technical thread, then I don't know what is. If the only reason for moving it is because the car is now for sale, that's just plain silly.

I will update this thread with the additional mods I've done since I first posted this thread, just need to gather up and organize the pics I've taken. I would appreciate the mods returning this thread to the 1st Gen Tech section where it belongs. I would also like the Moderator who moved this thread to PM me and explain the reasoning behind it.

I find it disrespectful not only to me but also to the rest of the forum that this thread, with a great deal of technical information, has been moved to the Non-Tech section.

JunpoweR, very nicely done. I had the same problem with the front tires on mine, 15X7 Epsilons. I have since gone with 15X9" SSRs in the front, 15X10" in the rear. Afaik. this particular body kit is the widest one made for the 1st gens.
