In Tank Fuel Sump For SA and FB's!!
 

One thing I always envied from the fd guys was the availability of parts. one of them is the in tank fuel setups that they can choose from...single bosch, dual bosch etc. So I began looking around various forums to see if anyone or any company had built anything like that for the first gens. I ran across a forum member under the name "elwood" and saw a pic of the setup he had. i contacted him about building one for me. after some back and forth he agreed and i was happier than a kid at a candy store. this meant i could get rid of my external fuel lines on an old school style sump.

external -10 line running to an Aeromotive A1000 with a filter in between. It was good but for what I am going to be doing soon, not good enough. for the return i simply put a -8 fitting on the stock tank pick up tube cap. it worked, but it honestly wasnt very efficient. the aeromotive pump is best mounted below tank lavel and my fuel line curved upward, this caused some cavitation and i never wanted to go past 12-14 psi boost out of fear of running dry and leaning out.
sump was done by Rick's Hot Rods here locally. if anyone knows of their work, you know they do it right. tank was cleaned out and welded properly and then checked for leaks. either way, i wanted to go to a more "stock" look.

it is a complete unit with a bosch 044 inside keeping that small tank filled at all times.

to mount this i sent elwood a gas tank so he could do his test fittings and modifications to make it fit with a very well built flange with an o-ring that holds the entire unit in place. bye bye external line, hello "stock" tank!!

This was a test unit so i was prepared for a possible roadblock. the only one was the location of the vent itself. i contacted elwood and we went over some remedies. finally all we did was block off the old vent on the unit and move it forward on the tank. here is how it sits on my tank currently.

this solved the leak issue. that simple.

with this setup i had the option to run one or two bosch 044 externally. i went with two...the entire system runs -8 lines from tank to engine and back.
this is the setup on the two external pumps. it looks bulky but it really isnt. not even visible when looking at car sideways.

I had a local guy Eric from ProDrag chassis do the wiring with each pump running its own relay, a cutoff switch to the whole system and even individual LED's to let me know each pump is running. i checked everything and turned the key. with the old setup i was running 43 psi at idle. with this the same regulator not being adjusted was marking 57psi!! i had to turn down the pressure before turning the car on!!
after sitting for about a month while i changed out all this, i expected the car to be a bit stubborn to fire up. it fired right up, idled right away, and even sounds better. my explanation is that since it has a steady flow of fuel at an even rate, it just runs a helluva lot better...

It is obviously a much more efficient and well designed system. i am happy as can be with this setup and finally am making plans to dial up the boost and run some C16 in this!!

Very very cool setup. I am clearly bookmarking this thread and Coachman Performance for future need. Will be investing this when I finally get around to starting my SA project.

Flame thrower! I'm a-scared! Sure surprised me!

The flames are just fun, especially when a tailgater tries to "intimidate" me...i just let off and watch them quickly back off. Even though afr's are dialed in (steve kan tuned it) it still does it. Doesnt bother me....i never notice except at night when it flashes and it looks like an UFO is coming up on me.

So far i have about 1200 miles on this new setup. Not a single issue. Not that i was expecting any but as with anything new, one can never tell. This friday im putting on the slicks and taking the car for a few runs downs the track. Gonna see how i can put the gopro cam facing the FPR to see if anything (besides pressure rising) happens. Not going for any time records or anything, just for the test and tune evening.

Took the car to the track for some fun. Best time was a granny shifted 12.31. Not bad for this being the first time I run the car after many changes. I need to work on my reaction time and also my staging. 60ft was a respectable 1.48. Overall I am happy with the car.

As far as fuel system goes, all i can say is effin flawless!! Car felt awesome, no sign of fuel starvation at hi rpms, and idle after each run was dead on at 1000rpms. I'm in love with this setup, i cant speak highly enough of it!!

Hey mate could you not just use the same size as the stock plate and have the new fittings into the plate??

Would you be able to post some pics of the underneath of the plate? Do you run any pipes into the tank?

Winfield's pricing is amazing. I can't even see how he's making anything from doing these for us. Mine is a Walbro 416 (e85) pump. Check out my build for more pictures.

You can check into the Hydramat too. All you need is to make the top plate. With the hydramat, bigger is better. I'm only running a stock port, so -6 is enough. But it would be easy to make a -8 or double -8 just as easy. But. you will need a clean tank because it is a 15 micron filter and will collect the rust till it gets plugged.

Nope, I'm avoiding this like the plague. Already planned to do it myself, until I realized it can't handle e85 and has an expected lifespan of 5-10yrs in a pump gas environment. NOPE! I'd rather not have my initial fuel filter fall apart and destroy more sensitive things (worse would be starving the engine) down the line.

Another reason why I don't run any muffler with rockwool aka stainless steel packing material. First mufler blows up, then takes out all the rest (or clogs the exhaust, which blows my motor).
