renesis fb

Now i know there's been a few renesis swaps before into first gens, but I'm going the extra kilo

I will be swapping the entire drivetrain: motor, trans, stock ecu, subframes, diff, driveshaft, full suspension, hubs, everything. Its basically an rx8 with an fb body...

Why?
1.I got a running rx8 shinka for dirt cheap, ill be running under stock power, stock everything pretty much so itll be "reliable"

2. Its new, no rust, corrosion or brittle plastic to worry about, or caked on oil filth. it has about 80k miles

3. more power than a 13b, even with a master rebuild and coil packs, it's gonna be cheaper than trying to source a bunch of used parts from an fc, and 12a parts are horribly expensive

4. everything i would want to mod is already there, lightweight flywheel, oil coolers, ram air, torsen lsd, carbon driveshaft, massive brakes, its basically a racecar already

so here it goes

interior was stripped out so we got right in to pulling the motor

Attachment 753009

sold the motor that same day, had around 79k on it

Sweet!

craaaazzy 02-16-16 08:32 AM

wow, i can't imagine tackling a project such as this...awesome. keeping an eye on this one.

btw, may want to ask a mod to move this to the build thread section.

JSmall 02-16-16 09:26 AM

Awesome. Gonna keep an eye on this :D

RGHTBrainDesign 02-18-16 12:01 AM

This is awesome! I was strongly considering doing the same route until I started getting FC parts left and right at a reasonable price. REALLY looking forward to seeing how this one turns out. Nice work so far!

The throttle had some play in it, which is strange since its sensor driven

Attachment 752963

Attachment 752964

I found the pedal attachment point had a lateral gap and the dowel it sat on was too small

Attachment 752965

a copper shim worked great, but time will tell if the pastic holds up

Attachment 752966

I also made a cylindrical shim for the dowel

Attachment 752967

also got an intake, probably wont see any performance gains but it'll free up some space as the stock filter was massive

Attachment 752968

moldyviolinist 02-19-16 12:15 PM

If you're going to be running the RX8 MAF, that intake is definitely going to be a performance decrease. RX8 MAF is extremely sensitive and is affected badly by turbulent air. Needs a long straight section of intake piping and/or air straightener fins.

Awesome build though! Can't wait to see how it turns out

RGHTBrainDesign 02-19-16 04:03 PM

Retrofit the factory Rx8 or S2000 intake system and run front ducting to guide air as needed to your intake/radiator/oil coolers, etc.

:egrin:

Cool stuff, I will gladly take the left taillight cover off you if you still have it.

How are you mounting the rear subframe??

the covers kinda shattered when i was washing the car, thats why i didnt use them.
not sure about the rear yet, im trying to keep original as much as possible but i may have to hack it up a bit

woodmv 04-23-16 07:24 AM

This is going to be an interesting build, subscribed!

I can't begin to count the number of times I thought about making a cart like that to set the body on for my build... I still might.

Qingdao 04-23-16 08:17 PM

Is the wheel base the same between the two cars? What about the shifter to rear end distance?

Looks like a somewhat doable project.

the rx8 turret is further back but so is the dash so i may just move back the seating position. driveshaft is too long and will have to be retubed.

Wow!!!

mazdaverx713b 08-10-16 05:25 AM

This is one stellar build! You're really not messing around here. This may be the first of its kind. I wonder how the car will handle when its complete and aligned.

rrluthi 08-12-16 01:16 PM

Super curious to how this turns out. I saw something like this that was done by a Japanese magazine when the RX-8 first came out, but hasn't been done in the US that I know of.

180sx-x 09-19-16 12:41 PM

So...hows the build coming? we need moar!!

rrluthi 09-19-16 10:17 PM

Haha when I saw this thread popped back up to the top I got all excited!

TwerkItOnMars 09-21-16 03:12 PM

God damn, crazy ass build haha! Looks like the shell started off in really rough shape. Awesome to see it get cleaned up like it is

ROTARY_ADDICT-1 09-21-16 03:46 PM

wow!!!

ROTARY_ADDICT-1 12-04-16 04:03 PM

any new update on this build ?

RGHTBrainDesign 12-04-16 05:27 PM

When my car is all done up, we should do a comparison of a double wishbone F&R FB vs. a properly done up McPherson Strut and Solid Axle FB (mine). :egrin: It'd be awesome to see how the cars perform differently and document it all for the 1st Gen guys.

WANKfactor 12-04-16 05:44 PM

Hey y’all, its been a minute. Basically I sold off all my other projects so this build will receive my full attention and updates should be pretty regular from here on out. Also the renesis found a new home in non wrecked rx8 so the fb is gonna get something a bit more, uh... German. yeah.

Im not shooting for any competitive rulebook so ill just be adding the necessities for street driving (no cage bars running through the firewall) however this setup should allow for a full roll cage down the road.

The original interior was trashed after sitting out in the Texas heat for nearly 15 years, and clean fb part are becoming exceedingly difficult to find. I think a retrofit looks like the right choice

After beefing up the suspension, I figured she'll do well with a bit more torque and NA rotarys just dont do it for me, so I’m going with an inline 6. Yep, that’s a bmw gearbox.

Qingdao 04-01-17 08:13 PM

I'm still interested but get ready you're gonna have a lot of hate aimed at you now. lol

craaaazzy 04-02-17 08:51 PM

love seeing all the custom work!

hawk 7 04-03-17 05:31 PM

Do you have the RX8 seats mounted? If so, what bracket did you use and is the passenger seat at the same height as the FB seats?

Freeskier7791 04-05-17 07:57 AM

This is cool I can see your fab skills have increased over the project as well. In for the flaming when you post pics of the BMW engine in there.

I haven’t got around to mounting them yet but just from looking at them in the car the outer rear seat mounting holes will have to be shortened about 3/4" to sit flat. its definitely not a bolt in application but ill try to run through the mounting process in detail next week.

Its been a busy week, but the motor is mounted up without any subframe or oil pan trimming. Im using an s52 from an e36 M3. Now its no s54, but I picked up the motor, trans and complete chassis wiring for under a grand. Everything fit up better than i had hoped and the front suspension is basically complete.

The rx8 steering rack was about 3" too low, so it was either cut the oil pan to fit the massive EPS, or use another rack.
