My New FB, Turbo swap to come
Hey guys here my new car, 1985 Mazda RX7. GSL package so it has rear discs, power windows, power mirrors. I bought it with no engine set up for 2nd gen NA. I've decided to put a 2nd generation turbo 4 port engine in. I have the motor, have a turbo, manifold etc on the way.
Anyway heres the car, 3 owners. Original owner had it 18 years. http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/...ke02/photo.jpg http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/...e02/photo2.jpg http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/...e02/photo1.jpg This will also serve as my build thread as I turbo this beast. Hoping for end of summer completion, funding comes in on wednesday..Thats when I start ordering everything. Was originally t9 or v9 not sure, can't read the VIN sticker. Originally had maroon interior. Now has mostly black interior which I believe is s2..Fiero seats, and denim headliner and sun visors...ill be changing them to black, not my taste. Some of you may recognize the car as I bought it off of a forum member. |
nice find i remember those tires back in the 90s
|
Lol yeah they're old. BFG Radial T/As..205/50r13 on SA waffle wheels.

Haha yes, your probably right. I was just told it was a GSL. Any badges have been removed. But yes it does have an s2 interior. The previous owner installed it, its incomplete. The interior was originally maroon. According to the VIN it is an 85. Its also listed as grey on the old ownership.

Congrats! Although I think you really have an "S" model which somebody added those goodies later on. No Sunroof, and No Rear Wiper. Also your dash looks an S2 Model one. So it's an 82/83 Model (since there is no key on the fuel door)
As for the lack of sunroof, I have come across a few true GSL's without. I dont know why anyone would choose to have it built without (fear of leaks?), but it was possible! |

Here is my FB Comp Turbo with a V-Mount Intercooler and AEM Water/Methanol Injection. All Big brakes conversion (Power Stop drilled rotors) 5x114.3. It's nearly completed. Built by JRX Rotary. We tried a 18x10 on 285/35/18 on my car (black wheel). Believe it or not.. Hell yeah it fits perfectly. Front wheels 16x9 and rear wheels 17x11. And that's my final fitment.
|
Surely an S2 if running SA waffles?
Looks clean though, nice find. |
85 FB, nice car man! I want mine to be like that when I'm done.
According to the VIN, used vehicle information package and my ownership it is indeed an 85. Believe me I can tell the difference for the most part, I just don't know all the options of FBs. Well I got a turbo s5/t04b hybrid, injectors, intercooler, ecu and what not. I've discovered that the motor I was gonna use is scrap..nothing useable. Been thinking about what to do with it. |
Good luck to you MazdaMike.. My FB should be fired up this week and be going to get a new paint job, same color. It still has an original paint but it has a dent or two and I'm removing all side markers. I think it would look very clean without them. I have changed nearly everything in that car. With many hours of calculation and the fact I wanted my FB to be kinda different, I am able to build a set of 16x9 and 17x11 BBS RS deep dish wheels. The outer lips and inner barrels filled both inside and out. Peace Out

My FB TURBO was fired up at the first click last night. Two thumbs up to my builder, Juni of JRX Rotary. You are " The Real Rotary God " Juni...

Nice platform you got there dude. I want to get an FB and do the Turbo II swap as well.
|
What kind of turbo is that...??? I am using a Comp Turbo GT35R Triple ball Bearing.
|
I believe its a T04B//HT18 turbo. its an s5 hybrid.

Please START YOUR OWN THREAD, FOR YOUR OWN CAR. You seem to be posting irrelevant information on some threads, just to self-promote your car. We want to you to self-promote your car, and your build. Just do it in your own thread. Don't hijack other people's build threads. |
very nice 85!! i like the aftermarket green. looks good on the car! any more pics to share?
|
Hmm somebody got banned.. Anyway, yeah I don't really have any gotta take some more. Theres nothin to see in the engine bay, cause they're isnt one. And the interior is pretty rough too, I got some work to do first. I got some new engine parts though gotta take some pics of.
|
Got some new parts! Here's some s5 TII rotors and s4 TII rotor housings. Rotors are in great shape, housings are mint..no chrome flaking or anything!

Here's some more pics of the car I took today

Freshly lapped and ported! Ordering the rebuild kit on thursday, I should have everything by the 3rd week in June and hopefully built and in the car by July! I still have on the way, Pineapple Racing Porting Templates, Crank Sensor Cover, TII yoke from Mazdatrix and some nice stickers from Rotary13b1.com. I also purchased a front mount plate and a rotor t-shirt from a forum member which should be here soon. |
Oh does anybody know what compressor that is pictured above? I don't think its a t04b..
|
Nice car bro. Do you mind me asking how much your housings and rotors cost? Im thinking of a t2 swap but don't want to spend more than it's worth u know. Cheers. From jozey
|
Dude I blew my budget on engine parts alone. The tII shortblock I had was completely trash. Both rotors and housings were toast, and the Irons have a fair bit of step wear.
I spent $800 on the rotors and housings. Housings are totally mint I expected to pay more. The rotors aren't mint but they're in very good shape, s5 tII. Basically I paid 200 for each rotor and 200 for each housing. And on Thursday night I got my Irons. Freshly lapped, re-nitrided, and big ass streetported. The centre iron was port matched to front and rear its massive. I paid $450 bucks for them. Only thing is now Ive gotta buy a standalone due to the porting. Not a problem though but I gotta save up another $1000. I blew all the money I had saved: |
Yeah thats alright tho, you get what you pay for i guess and its good you're doing most of the work your self.
Keep it up and it'll be done in no time! |
Yeah bro, thats the advantage of being a auto technician lol I work on everything myself.
Rebuild kit on the way, goodies from Pineapple Racing here..and Irons are here just need to be cleaned. I havent decided which standalone im going with though. I'm pretty lazy and I dont particularly wanna rewire the car so I was thinking Apexi PFC..but we all know about the shitty wiring problems with our cars so I'll probably buy a Haltech Platinum Sprint RE. |
wow, your car looks very nice :D its crazy how many of us are doing turbo swaps right now. hope you get your engine together soon cause i cant wait for pics.
|
Thanks man. Rebuild kit shipped today! Just gotta order some OEM apex seals now.
|
Got some updates for you guys I was busy on saturday.

Still cleaning and painting parts but I should have some time to start assembly. Uploaded with ImageShack.us |
damn looking good man! you engine looks exactly the same as mine haha. what omp are you going to run? what ecu? keep up the good work!
|
Im gonna run the stock OMP probably with that adapter from RA to run a remote OMP resevoir. I havent decided yet I might just premix.
I plan on running a Haltech ECU, probably an E6K or E6X. I recently bought 2 books off of Amazon to help me learn to to tune it as well. |

Looking good! The 12a oil pan won't work for you though, you'll need the one from a GSL-SE (unless that was a typo in your earlier post)
|
Ill have to look for that thread, that definitely interests me. Yeah I chose Haltech because for one a very reputable builder told me to get one. For one if I need help tuning it he knows about it. Really theres massive support for Haltechs, and I've heard its fairly easy to learn.
82transam thanks for pointing that out man. I totally gapped out and forgot that the 12a pan is too short. Oh well, it was free. I would have figured that out quick when I went to throw it on! If anybody has an SE oil pan I need one! |
heres the link for the omp mod https://www.rx7club.com/rotary-car-p...p-pics-372329/
|
No problem :) You can actually still buy SE pans new, and I think they are under $100 - something to consider.
|
Yeah I looked it up today my cost is $90 for a brand new pan I'm going to order one next Wednesday.
|
any updates?
|
Yes. Spent Most of today porting my rotor housings. Pineapple Racing streetable mild exhaust port. To go with my ported intake ports.
http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/8218/photo7qe.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us |
wow those look nice! is this your first time porting? did u do a practice housing first?
|
Yeah it was my first time lol I as very worried about ruining my mint housings but they came out great. I was very careful, they came out good.
|
thats sweet man, good job. did u use a dremel?
|
Yes I used a Dremel with the snake attachment. I did major grinding with the carbide. Ground the rest out with the stones, then finished it with 80,120,320. I did the final polishing with 3 different brushes, steel, brass and nylon.
I have an update. Engine is together! Well mostly..Im waiting on a 3/4 NPT tap so I can drill and tap my front cover for oil return. And the oil pan didnt go on yet because the front cover isnt on. http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/8296/photo9tst.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us |
I love the lettering!
|
looks like its coming together nicely. i like the green.
|
Thanks guys. Im losing my shit right now.. I didn't notice that all the exhaust studs for the rotor housings were damaged til the motor was put together. I can't get the studs out...I've tried multiple stud removers, heated one with a torch and quenched it and it will not come out. I'm so angry, cause now I'm probably gonna have to bring it to a machine shop to have them get the studs out...and who knows what thats gonna cost.
|
i had this same problem. weld a bar to them at a bit of an angle so it will clear everything when rotated and maybe they will come out (they did for me), the heat from welding might help.
|
Im gonna try welding nuts to them and use impact. If they break fuck it ill drill um out and heli coil it.
|
Updates! Lots!
Got the studs out, 2 came out with a heavy duty stud remover. 1 broke at almost the very end and the other did too. Had to drill both of them, I didn't take any pictures of that. Both threads were damaged, one severely. So instead of Heli-Coiling them, we bought a Time-Sert thread repair kit. Best tool ever, best investment. I drilled out the housings and inserted new threaded inserts (m10 x 1.50). Heres the manifold installed with new studs and stainless exhaust nuts. http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/4894/1000067w.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us Water pump pulley, Thermostat Neck, TB Inlet, alt bracket, charge pipe, CAS all cleaned up and painted. http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/8471/1000071r.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us Heres my stockpile of parts so far Energy Suspension watts link poly bushing kit (Free!) its starting to look really good man. i like the wrinkle finish paint on your manifolds, looks dope. when you get the long block all assembled could you take a couple pics of the omp linkage near lim and coolant housing? i like to see how mazda ran it through there for ideas on making mine.
