A little more info

The steering wheel and shift **** are original. I have the original shift and brake boot but they are not on the car they need to be sewn back together (long story).

Those boots were hand cut and stitched by some guy, I would have to research he used the original boot patterns and made them from deer leather I think, exact replicas with the snaps and all he even punched the holes to fit under the center panel.

Yes that is a name plate with the original owners name on it (mine), the reason the interior looks so new is because the car only has 20,000 miles its not a restore just been modified and maintained through the years.

Although its not stock I have every part taken off of it thermal reactor, entire exhaust coasting valve everything, the parts probably to this day have about 10,000 miles on them some like stock I like it some where in between.

The turbo is a BAE from Pacific Turbo draw through

Please before any one tells me the air cleaner is going catch fire the clearance from the hood is so minimal I never found any thing with a lower profile I’m more worried about a hose from the turbo blowing off next to the exhaust with a fuel charge in it more, you cant see it but there is a fire extinguisher mounted behind drivers seat (not stock).

The glass sunroof is going to be a nice addition to the car . Got it on ebay for 150$ and it was in pretty good shape. It was a helluva journey from oregon though. The first shipping attempt by UPS resulted in it going back to the seller ( appantly the notice card form UPS got lost and holding date expired), then seller and his wife broke up and the email contact i had disappeared, address changed , no replies etc. etc. . I played private investigator ( its amazing what you can find out about a total stranger on the internet if you are persistant) and eventually tracked down the wife and had to spook her a bit , she had the roof , and my money , but had lost my shipping address and email. Anyway, long story short , six months later the roof arrived.

As it turns out, the front pins were severely rusted though and wouldn't last more than one year of on-and-off. I was lucky enough to find a new set of pins at Atkins for reasonable price. I still need to find some replacement bolts for the 4 rusted ones through the glass at the top and bottom corners. They work OK, but look like ****.

Rust is the #1 way to lighten your car

Are you going to keep it black?............They look so good black, I haven't seen too many that color.

Keep up the good work and keep the pics coming as you progress

I am working on a second set of front and rear bumpers and if anyone was wondering what the parts look like , here ya go . I didn't really know what they looked until I started this .

I salvaged some parts off some old rusted pieces . the shocks front and back will go on with some tremclad protection. The first pic are the rear shocks and I cut the mounting plate to install them on the other bumper. The front shocks mounting plate is a little different. The rubber end pieces were pretty screwed , especially the steel plates that hold the bolts and give the side rubber rigidity. I have to hget some new rear ones ( used ) . I have a second set of front.

here are some pics of the front and rear rubber strips also.

The front is different than the back . Front is shorter and has 6 bolts welded into the metal strip inlay and 10 mm nuts thread onto them from the inside of the bumper.

The rear has about 8 clips that twist into a two piece metal inlay and get pushed into the square holes in the bumper. The clips can be released from the inside of the bumper. I coated the metal inlays with some tremclad paint to resist the rust .

Last two pics are of the front light assembly and the rear rubber strip that sits on top of the rear bumper.

here's a few of the first pics of the new E6 paint .

The colour is great . Looks black in just light shade and a deep grey in the sunlight. The paint shop told me the metalic has silver and red in it which may explain the origonal red pinstriping on the Limited Edition You really can't see any red in the metallic.

The kamei spoiler had great fitment and was painted after mounting . I have not mounted the rear spoiler yet. Still can not decide if I want to wait . It will be mounted wiith three holes through the back and bolts up into threads in the spoiler.

can't wait to see the konig rewinds on it . but will have to wait . the car has to get to manitoba first.

Lookin' mighty fine Ray - time for some body moldings once the paint is cured eh?
Might take a hard look at the 3M clear overlay on the nose bits too. Had mine 2 yrs now - not a mark, invisible to the eye!

Thanks Stu, yea about those moldings , any ideas?

One of the new features of the car is having a FAN that works and has multiple speeds . now thats a performance upgrade !!!

I installed the Nichrome resisitor this weekend I got from mazda . Here's three pics of the install . It needed a 10 mm socket to get the blower housing off ( two bolts up under the passenger side dash and one on the firewall). And then a small ratchet philips screwdriver to remove the resistor from the top side of the blower housing . A short screwdriver won't clear the plastic housing to get one of the screws.

I also unnecessarilty lost a "clip" that holds the two pieces of the housing together . I thought you had to take it off and it flung up into the dash somewhere . If you do this repair . You don't need to remove any clips .

pulling the fan motor out of the housing is a little tricky , but be patient , you just have to wiggle it a bit .

the second picture is the old resistor . I tangled the broken wires to have one high speed for a while . The new resistor is in the third pic installed ( looking up from the bottom inside the blower housing.

Thumbs up

Nice work, I like how it came out! If I can find the time, I will have to take some pics of my Limited. I have a couple of questions. Looks like you have a custom cup holder in the center console. How did you go about doing that? Does your tape player work? Do you know if the blower motor is still available? Again, nice work.

1. The cup holder is an early 90's miata accessory item . Four pics below. They are discontinued from mazda but I bought two on ebay a couple years ago . Apparantly mazda recycled the ashtray console design from the SA's into the miatas these years . If you remove the snap in ashtray , the cup holder fits in pefectly . It has a removable tray under it for "spillage" and a BIG GULP attachment for one of the holes . Happy searchin'

2. The tape player will go on but not play . It just clicks direction changes constantly. I think it needs new rubber bands on the motors inside . I am going to to take it out next winter and try to fix . Also try and hook up the MP3 player DIN plug accessory in the back spare one for the 8-track player option they put in the upgraded Clarion units in the limited edition's. see this thread below for that. My radio and antenae work but only one channel and antennae doesn't go down. Again, next winters project to update on this thread. I think its all fixable. Just never had the time before.

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ght=mp3+player

3. don't know , you'd have to look into . i imagine one of the usual first gen ebay stores sellers would have one to sell

One of the parts of the interior that hasn't aged well since '79 is the chrome accent molding along the dash.

I bought some narrow "Trim Brite" exterior edging at canadian Tire and put it in place of the old cracked stuff. I actually like the trim brite stuff better. I mounted it with the rubber edge "up' which seems to follow the top contour of the dash nice and it also orients the shiny side down a bit . It doesn't shine in your face , but when you put anything near it it shines down ..... kinds cool effect actually. Here a pic of the old stuff and one of the new stuff.

For the blower motor, they can be rebuilt if it is not working (and the prob is not with the switch or resistors). My SE blower motor died a couple years back..I opened it up and found that one of the motor brushes was down to nothing. Got 2 new brushes from a local alt/starter repair shop. I think it was $4 for the pair. They were standard 1/4"x1/4" brushes, I believe.

Nice work on the restore of that '79 LE. She looks beautiful.

I worked on the grounds a bit and got the digital clock on the LE working good again . I've owned a lot cars , but honestly, think I like the look of the '79's dash more than any of them and walking up to the car and settling down behind the wheel is still great

heres a couple shots . You US guys can drool over the 200 Km/Hr speedo . ........ Its nicer to try to peg than 120 mph, or even worse the reduced 80 mph speedo version .

one more update during the Nugget/ Lakers game .... and my last beer .

I taped the modified rear IMSA spoiler I bought/painted on the car today to help decide whether to put it on yet or not . It has three threaded inserts for bolts that will require drilling through the back of the hatch area .

what do you think ? I am still undecided .

FWIW Ray - if your _going_ to punch holes in your car - at least make it worth while and get the OEM style that Mazda designed for the RX7. Pic attached - these are available as US Market fibreglass, the most common, or the factory-original FB piece that is made of Urethane rubber - which is what the pic is. Note the "legs" of the spoiler are longer, extending almost to the back of the B pillar. Either way its MORE holes (sorry) but maintains the OEM look. I say this with the caveat that 79, 80 SAs only had such spoilers on the competition-prepped cars, not street cars. But at least you stay true-too-stock which you have done such a great job of so far...

Also with a rear spoiler, but not the nerve to drill the holes...

^^^^^^^

hey stu, theres just something about the OEM one you have that looks too big to me . I just don't like it enough to put it on. The modified one I bought has a very similar contour , just a little lower and shorter "legs" that extend to the B Pillar. I like the look of it , but am going to hold off a while .

The next thing is likely getting some ReSpeed stuff I bought put on ....... stay tuned .

pretty boring pic below, but Damn that new washer bottle and pump looks good . 3 years and I never knew what the spray pattern was like . No more stop-and-wipe or driving behind truck spray on purpose for me
