I'm using brand new stock 3 row short style with a 3" thick intercooler in front of it on my turbo 7 and probably making 250-300hp. My temp guage reads 1/4-1/3 at all times in 100 degree weather beating on it...

Stock radiators do the job. People just feel the need to get aluminum and aftermarket stuff which is "better"...

Where did you get your 3 row rad at?

twinkletoes 09-10-11 10:51 AM

www.rockauto.com :icon_tup:

Some reason the direct link didn't work.

Part number CU701

mellow65 09-10-11 12:14 PM

They list both of them as a 3 row. I wonder if they all are in the after market.

mellow65 09-10-11 05:05 PM

Well i think I'm going to try the earlier one, the more I look at pictures of them both I notice the lower out put on the shorter one has a better angle on it coming out almost flat rather then shooting up.

mellow65 09-10-11 08:30 PM

Well it has been Ordered and will be here Tuesday.

Unfortunately I have hit the nickel and dime phase of every project. And I'll be down to pennys here soon.

But my goal is to at least start it before I have to go back to school at the end of the month. :)

twinkletoes 09-10-11 09:01 PM

Hmmmm weird. Well good news you ordered it. I know my old tall radiator was 2 row and some tall radiators I guess people say are 1 row.

It's actually very nice quality I like it a lot.

Better be a start up video on this thing!!

mellow65 09-10-11 09:44 PM

I'm doing the short one and both rock auto and Autozone carried the cheaper of the 2. Rock listed it as a 3 row and Autozone didn't list it as anything. I trust what rock says about their stuff, they seem to have a decent rep about their parts so I doubt they would put out BS info.

So same maker and exact same part number I'm going with it being a 3 row. And regardless it will get me going and down the road. Im going to maybe later sorce me an old short rad and have my local rad shop redo the guts of it, something that will handle more heat. So in the end I have a good spare and something that should definitely handle way more then a stocker.

It's the key to any good rally car, a stack of spare parts. :D

mellow65 09-10-11 10:11 PM

And with a life time warranty from Autozone it's hard to beat.

I used to work there many years ago and when they say life time, they mean life time and pretty much for any reason. They litterly will take anything back.

They even have life time warranty clutches, I have been running one in my impreza for a couple years now and one time I had to pull the motor for something I deciceded to put a new clutch in, just because. :)

twinkletoes 09-10-11 10:39 PM

Rockauto is great. Always been real good to me.

Definitely good to have spare parts when rallying lol.

I always get brake masters/slave clutch slave from local auto parts stores cause they're lifetime warranty :)

mellow65 09-11-11 11:09 PM

ok as much as i hate to admit it, i'm starting to get tired of looking at my car, but must press on, only 2 weeks till school gets going.

so a few quick things i did after i got home from work.
trimmed my drive line tunnel a little to clear the new drive line.
took an inch out of my rad support and moved it forward, it's going to be enough to clear that 180 degree pipe.
now i just need to get my new rad to see how much i can lower it, also need to check my hood clearance, you know plus a million and one other things.
cleaned up my gas tank, going to flush out and reseal the inside.

going to go pick up some stuff to finish my intake, a few things from the junk yard.

ugg, i'm getting burned out.

Not that it matters as you've already figured out a solution...

But to answer your question, the inlets and outlets are the same as The Mazda stuff. Just for your own curiosity, the lincoln rad would be on the correct side and a direct shot to the pipe you have pictured!

Keep pressing on. Your at the stage that everyone, including me, gets to when its just a bunch of tedious tasks left.

Since you have a deadline, taking a break isn't an option, but if you can, it may be good for your inspiration!

mellow65 09-12-11 11:32 PM

soooooooo maybe a slight change of plans. i was out at the junk yard today getting pockets full of random little things that i needed and i just happened to come across a rx7, well with a yard full of radiators i started to grab a few here and there, and i just happened to grab one from an impreza.

come to find out the impreza radiator is slightly narrower then the legacy that i originally tried to fit in there. narrow enough to fit with maybe just some slight frame notching.

so my now thought is, pretty much use the stock rad hoses to place the impreza rad where it would normally fit in front of the motor and build the mounts to fit.

i'm going to cross my fingers that it's going to clear the hood, if not there is a little room to take some bracing out of the hood to give me a little more fudge room.

i'm liking this idea better, just mainly because of the ease of rad hoses.

and it's a cheaper rad to start with.

i think i'll give it a try and see how it goes, worst case i can go back to the rx7 rad idea that i'm pretty sure will work.

mellow65 09-13-11 04:30 PM

LOL soooooo i'm back to where i was before yesterday. i got my rad from the parts store and i was pretty much going to return it and order up a impreza rad, but for the hell of it i opened the box to take a look, GOOD LORD ALL MIGHTY, this thing is ungodly beefy.

i mean i was expecting a core that was thicker then the stocker i had at home, but i mean this thing fills up the whole thing, i don't think you could add anymore core with out changing the caps.

so yeah, i'm back to the rx7 rad now. :D

i also figured out my lower hoses today when i was at the JY.

and i'm pretty sure i have the upper one figured out too.

but today is fuel, it can start it with out a radiator, kind of hard to start with out fuel.

ok so i have a massive stock pile of parts, means no more running around and more time in the garage.

played a little with the rad and figuring out how i'm going to mount my fan

Attachment 758663

also flushed out my gas tank today going to seal it up tomorrow.

Attachment 758664

the crappy thing is it says i need to wait 96 hours before i can put fuel in it. but should give me the time to finish everything else by then.

tomorrow, bend hard fuel lines, make some more brake lines, tidy up my harness under the hood.

also my clutch parts have started to show up, so one day soon it's all got to come out for the last time to get all my clutch stuff in and buttoned up.

to be continued... :D

twinkletoes 09-14-11 01:41 AM

Very nice!!! Lol about the radiator. It definitely is nice!!

Coming together very nicely. Looking forward to it being done!

teddyrx2 09-14-11 02:11 AM

its coming along

it was a day of fuel today.

i got the sealant in the tank today and now have to wait something like 4 days before i can put any fuel in.

Attachment 758649

i got the fuel tank back in and cut the hole so i can access my now in tank pump.

Attachment 758650

and, oh yeah, got all my fuel lines in. kind of a weird lay out, but clearly no one will ever be behind the front seats, and i'll have to make a cover for the ones in the hatch area.

WEEEEEEEE more shop time.

well first things first, oops one small mistake, guess i didn't leave enough room to get the starter out. :)

Attachment 758636

but nothing a BFH couldn't fix. :D

Attachment 758637

i did figure out my throttle cable today. i'm going to use the stock legacy cable. the rx7 one was just barely to short. I mean so damn close. because that would have been awesome. but no such luck. i did have to bend the pedal around and trim the hole in the fire wall but it will still use the rx7 pedal.

but as i had the pedal assembly apart i tried to fix something i have seen on every rx7 i have ever looked at, and that was a bent pedal stop.

Attachment 758638

should help the super heavy footed. :)

yanked the motor for the hopefully last time. did some cleaning up, welded up my strut tops and painted the engine bay.

Attachment 758639

now, my motor waits for it's clutch parts.

my flywheel showed up the other day, i'm just waiting for my pressure plate and disc.

Attachment 758640

damn i hate waiting for parts.

on a completely un-related side note, what part of portland are you in? you should pm me, I'd love to come help you wrench on that!

I guess I need to change that. I am actually out in Oregon city now. And I really appreciate the offer, but I moved back to my parents place and they live out in the boonys a little and they are weird about people just coming out. They have turned themselves into hermits almost.

Even people I have known for years they still have issues with. But they at least get over it.

And you know there has to be some mystery in it for everyone. There has been only 3 sets of eyes that have seen this in person in this form.

When I get it going I'll make sure to make it to a get together or something so I can show it off. :)
