I rallycrossed my Legacy GT a couple years ago and actually ran against a couple first gens, so I wanted to take my first gen out and give it a try in the dirt. Unfortunately they quit having races after that season. I never thought of combining the two. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

There seem to be quite a few of us (Rx7 and Subaru owners) on here, strange that we all like the same cars lol.

I'm really looking forward to seeing more progress on this build!

I've noticed that. I actually traded my TII for my Legacy. I think we all just like weird motors and good handling.

Probably true. "normal" engines are too boring lol.

Funny, I parted my T2 swapped FC to buy my impreza lol, I see a trend here.

Go crazy-ass FBs!

Got some more time out in the garage today. Didn't get tons done but I was able to hang the motor and trans in and start to figure out my mounts.

Look ma almost no hands. :)

What i'm using for motor mounts. Nothing like reusing parts that would have been tossed other wise. this is a link bar from the 4 runner rear axle chopped in half. I love free parts. :D
Attachment 758722

I'm hoping to have the mounts more figured by tomorrow. I just was getting to tired laying under the car looking at them to make any really good decisions.

To be continued...

well not tons of time in the garage today. I swear i end up with more things to do when i have time off from everything then when i am supposed to be at work or school.

but regardless i did get my motor as squared up as some guy in his garage probably really can. sinched it all down with some ratchet straps so it wouldn't move around and started to work on the mounts.

Attachment 758712

after a couple of hours i came away with this.

Attachment 758713

it's not finished welded yet, but it's all tacked in real good so it's not coming apart. going to do some bracing around the tube to make it way stronger then it needs to be, but that's how i like to build my stuff, overkill. :D

more pics, because everyone loves pics. :)

got my mounts all finished up today, got the tabs welded to the sub frame

Attachment 758706

bolted them on and crossed my fingers that i hadn't messed up some how.

Attachment 758707

after some push and pulling and getting things lined up i took a step back and had a big shit eating grin. look ma, no hands. it's kind of wrong how well it fit in there, but i'll take what i can get.

Attachment 758708

couple other things that i learned today that made this an even more bad ass swap.

1: the hood closes with no trimming.

Attachment 758709

and 2: the stock radiator and shroud will fit. the only down side is the bottom hole on the rad is on the wrong side, but i'll figure out how to deal with that later.

more to come, but i have to go to a wedding tomorrow so no garage time, boooooooo.

Alex84GSL 08-27-11 01:14 AM

Wow dude...
This is STUNNING. She's a beast and your fab skills are great. Can't wait to see how it does on the road.

thanks, i'm pretty happy with how well this has not brought people into an ALL CAPS RAGE because it wont have a rotary in it. regardless how people feel, i always figure credit has to be given for thinking outside of the box.

at least it's not a some v8 swap. :D

got some more time out in the garage yesterday, got my rear caliper brackets all shimmed and centered up. I bent up my hard lines and trying to figure out what i'm going to use for soft lines.

Does anyone know if you can just get FB rear brake lines in braided steel by themselves, or do i have to buy a whole kit?

thought i would at least share a pic i took for another forum. the pole across the engine bay is the front axle center line. and a large chunk of the motor is behind it. I think that counts as a mid engine right? ;)

82transam 08-30-11 07:51 AM

That's looking great! Can't wait to see the finished car

DivinDriver 08-30-11 09:55 AM

There's something thoroughly wrong with this gentleman; I heartily approve.

Who'da thunk you could put an airplane motor into a -7?

DriveFast7 08-30-11 11:51 PM

The weight distribution should still be good. A for effort. Is that a watts link on the toyota rear end, facing forward?

yeah that's the stock watts link from the mazda rear end swung over to the toyota rear end.

got some more time out in the garage today, yesterday i swear i spent most of the day running around snagging parts, and dropping crap off. but after getting some tube bends for my header, dropping off my drive line to be shortened, and getting a bunch of brake fittings so i can finishing running my hard lines i got some time to get my drivers side header done.

Attachment 758699
Attachment 758700

i should have more time tomorrow now that i have all my tubing to finish the passenger header and bring them all together. and then some brake lines, and then about a million other things. :)

Here's a picture of my cat

Heres a sweet deck that I built
Attachment 716072

:D

If you want some thing specific just ask, I'm taking pics and posting them pretty much as I do them.

Today's project is finishing the header, needed to run up and get an O2 bung so I can weld it in

I'll post pics of it later today.

cfamilyfix 08-31-11 10:24 PM

I think mazda and suby guys think alike...and when you combine the two its just respect all around. No one can deny the fab skills that go into a project like this. Nice build (again) and am anxious for the finished product!

yeah i think old school mazda and subaru guys are similar, and the new rx8 and STI guys are more concerned about color of their tail lights to really understand why their car is what it is. hello newbe, subaru has been here before 2002 when the WRX showed up. :D

any who, got the other side exhaust done, ran some pipe between them brought them together into a flange that I can build the rest of the exhaust off of.

only thing not in the picture was the O2 bung, and it wasn't until i looked at the picture and realized that i forgot to put it in.

tomorrow i'm going to dress up the welds, see if i can figure a way to check if i have any leaks at the welds, and then put it in it final resting place.

That cat is awesome lol. Oh and the exhaust is looking great too! Scary how well it fits around the steering...
