Boogy woogie

Alright, im gonna attempt to write my build progress via a cell phone as I go along so be patient. I bought my first rx7 a 85 gs non runing for 1g back in may I believe. In 45min of work and a spare battery from my zx2 she was layin rubber. I had done small maintence on it, 2 tires, painted it from gold/primer/rust/half clear coat peeled to a flat spray paint black. Also deletwd a couple things off the carb and did the freeze plug mod as the intake was leaking coolant. 1 of the plugs leaked still. It has a rigged efan on it, pump delete, off brand header and rigged ricer exhaust, 2 speakers powered by a amp and cheap radio for the tunes lol.

A month ago the motor went. 60 compression on the best seal on the front 40 for the other 2 and 70 for the rear rotor. I stripped the motor of everything I could except the beehive cooler but cant get anyone to help me lift the motor out. (no idea how much this will weigh so I dont want to do it by myself unless someone knows?) I have picked up a s4 water pump housing and quick polished it and the neck. Bought a rebuild kit for the carb but wanting to know everything I can do for it while its out. Gf isnt to happy with it sprawed out on the kitchen floor. (theres a story behind that).

Im still trying to source a few parts incase I find a short block or if I can afford to rebuild mine because its gonna have to be ported. Kind of hard with winter paychecks and holidays but im doing good right now and not to the point of trading yet. So this is the beggining of project boogy woogie a cheap hard work build to improve and fix all the riggin to her.

highnitro12187 12-16-12 03:32 PM

glad to hear someone else pulls these engine like i do! i take an 8-10 foot 4x4 lay it across the stut towers and use a strap to attach it to the engine, then get a friend to help and lift it out. ive done 4 engine swaps this way and they are pretty light. just make sure you dont try to pull the engine/trans, that'll be alot harder.

Coltdaddy47 12-16-12 03:53 PM

All this and it wolnt let me upload pics feom phone or transfer from photobucket.

Coltdaddy47 12-16-12 03:55 PM

Well when you grew up in the country you learned to work harder and cheaper than easier.

Here is what I have been working on. S4 waterpump housing polished with polished neck. Carb and kit ready to be put together.

Coltdaddy47 12-17-12 01:44 PM

Right now im stripping and modding the intake manifold. If anyone has done this to the full extent please chime in. I need inspiration.

Coltdaddy47 12-20-12 04:41 PM

Ok thanks to highnitro I took a 6ft pole and 3 ratchet straps and pulled the motor out pretty easily. Took it to a guy to gett the rear nut off and instead they took apart the rear half of the motor and every bolt except the front one in the pully. So im having a hell of a time.

Full extent....... are you the nikki or emissions equipment?

I'll get you a pic of my stripped intake this weekend

Coltdaddy47 12-21-12 10:15 AM

I did the intake. Waiting on my new book to do the nikki. Mean while im working on the bolt in the front of the motor to tear it down.

Coltdaddy47 01-01-13 07:15 PM

Ok I found a high milage motor for $150 that I need a truck to pick it up that will go into the car so that I have something to drive while I rebuild the other motor. itll be a ported 12a with coolant mod, emissions stripped, rats nest deleted, modified stock intake, s4 water pump and housing. Still deciding on ignition system as I hate msd products. Also im open for a aircleaner idea on the nikki.

FCinWV 01-01-13 11:28 PM

with the mods you plan on doing, two blaster 2 coils will be fine. no need to go crazy on a 12a unless u boost it or perhaps bridgeport it.

FCinWV 01-01-13 11:33 PM

as for the nikki air cleaner id get a plenum and run some intake pipe to a good k&n cone filter. if done cleanly it will look pretty sharp.

Coltdaddy47 01-02-13 12:50 AM

I have 1 accel coil already and plan on getting another.but I dont know which way I want to go for the rest of the ignition. I love the KISS method for most things. As for the air cleaner I just dont like the rb or factory one so I want to go a little different

Coltdaddy47 01-29-13 12:10 PM

Ok guys I have been hard at work the last couple of weeks reconditioning parts, ordering new ones, getting my new temporary high mileage motor and modding some parts. I reworked the factory intake, polished the 4th gen water pump housing (the weight difference is amazing) ordered a gmp water pump and painted it, matched with a stant 180 thermostat. Dissasembled 2 of my 3 carbs and stripped them to make 1 for this motor. And hopefully in a few hours ill have the carb finished after 25-30 hours of work into it.

It aint true without pics. 1 and 2 are of new motor. 3 is mess of carb parts on kitchen floor (and the landlord wants to take a walk through next week). 4 and 5 are the intake waterpump and housing.

Here are some pics of my carb that I just got done. 40+ hours into painting, cleaning, rebuilding, stripping, and modding it. I know its not for everyone but it was a learning experience for me.

So i picked up the high milage motor and cleaned it and did a few things to it. Right now i need a engine hoist to get it into the car and so on. The motor sits now with the homemade omp block off plate, spark plug area ground away so i dont need a new plug socket, 2nd gen waterpump housing with a new waterpump and thermostat, about to have the new rear engine seal in and hopefully later i can pick up a waterpump pully( b/c nobody said you had to have a 2nd gen one to do the swap) and a washer for the eccentric shaft nut so i can put my freshly machined flywheel on.

Redliner223 03-03-13 03:41 PM

Am I going crazy? Are there seriously spend bullet casings on your carb?

Coltdaddy47 03-03-13 03:48 PM

Yes there is. 243 casings to be exact. And more to come elsewhere when i get the chance. Do you guys Like it or not?

Redliner223 03-03-13 04:11 PM

I like it. It gives it a little more personality.
"Shoot first and ask questions later" should be a sticker on you car.

woodmv 03-03-13 04:32 PM

Loving it! Keep going! It provides inspiration for the rest of us.

KansasCityREPU 03-03-13 06:56 PM

Is that an aluminum waterpump housing? If it's not and just bare metal it's going to rust really fast. I do power coating and live in Liberty if you want anything powder coated or just blasted.

Also, the top of that waterpump housing neck to a perfect place to put an aftermarket water temp sensor. I have one just like it. I also have a tap and die set to put a sensor in. Just let me know.

Coltdaddy47 03-05-13 06:04 PM

Kcrepu that is a 2nd gen aluminium housing i quick polished and clear coated. But if you do powder coatingwe may have to make some deals down the road. And i retapped all the housings holes while i was at it. I need to see if i will even need the sensor in the back of the housing or if i can switch that to controle the efan. Im hoping to put the motor in on sunday but i have no idea where to hook a engine hoist to the motor to drop it in and how to install and the distributor and time it as thats a new one for me. More to learn.

Coltdaddy47 03-10-13 01:45 PM

I have a couple questions and dont flame me. I have a high milage motor and no funds at the moment. What can i do to REVIVE the current clutch besides that i resurfaced the flywheel since the clutch has a decent amount if life in it and also isnt there supposed to be a washer behind the shaft nut or not?

Coltdaddy47 03-12-13 02:51 PM

So progress has been slow on the car the last couple of days. I simply misplaced some bolts that bolt the motor to the tranny so i decided since the garage was a mess to the point you couldnt walk through it. I bought some pegboard and put that up, went to a auction and got some fastner holders like at ace hardware for my bolts and put the spare motor on the shelf unit. Still cant find the bolts yet but im waiting on a buddy to get me his clutch aligning tool and i need to buy some bolts for the front of the motor to hold the motor mount bar on. Im working on the beehive oil cooler today and hopefully will be finished by morning on it.

Ive been meaning to get a pic of my homemade 54mm nut removal tool. So here it is and remember the best tools a man has are homemade with a welder.

The sensor on the back of the waterpump housing is used for the choke auto also. I believe if it is not hooked up the choke will not stay out.

Coltdaddy47 03-13-13 09:23 PM

So i need a secong gen connector to splice into. And i still cant find my bolts to bolt the motor to the tranny. Beehive cooler will be done tonight, and clutch align tool will be here tomorrow.

Very nice. :icon_tup:

All you guys spend all this time making these interesting 2 11/16" sockets *... have ya'll ever tried going to a pawn shop and just picking out a 2 11/16" socket?

Nice craftsmanship at any rate though.

*Don't quote me... its like that size but I can't remeber off the top of my head.

Coltdaddy47 03-18-13 12:54 AM

Wheres the fun in buying one? Mine cost 1 beer. On another note i got the bolts, still need a second gen temp sensor connector, ordered a clutch align tool, lookin at a alternator upgrade, and a dual pully.

Got the motor in today with snow and rain in the driveway with the help of my gf.

woodmv 03-20-13 10:58 AM

Lookin' GOOD ColtDaddy! Superjealous.

Coltdaddy47 03-20-13 08:01 PM

The motor has the engine bay lookin like a diamond in the rough. Today i didnt have much time but did put the intake on, efan, got more coolant hose and random bolts. Its really finally coming together. The il lady is having a blast working on it. She wants me to turbo it but if i did forced induction id rather supercharge it.

Coltdaddy47 03-21-13 08:32 PM

So today it was snowin. I decided to stay in and messed with the carb. Did the ap gasket mod, couldnt find a clear pic to do the mechanical secondaries. I also was snooping around my misc parts shelf and decided that since i had a brand new alternator for a 88 buick skyhawk and i needed a new alt for the fb (bearings failed) that im gonnamake this 100amp alt work. Now i need a dual pully and a weather pack connector tool.

Coltdaddy47 03-24-13 12:59 PM

Picked a few things up from the junkyard. Still need a dual pulley and the starter wiring. Cant do much today unless i clear the snow off the car.

Coltdaddy47 03-25-13 06:08 PM

I decided to install the carb on the motor today (its bad a$$) but the end of one of the cables broke off. So i now need to find a cable stopper piece. Another sit back as i try to figure out this dual pulley on the new alternator.

Havent got a lot of work done lately (its crappie fishing season) but i have got in my new k&n airfilter and carter pump with holley regulator. Got the brackets done for both but just need to get the fittings for the regulator. Every project cost more than you think it will. And snow in may isnt helping either.

Coltdaddy47 05-19-13 08:40 AM

Got the pump in and wired up with a relay. Wiring was easy but trying to run the fuel lines and filter and so on in a cramped area was the hardest thing. Regulator was simple besides finding fittings. Also changed the top part of the carb as there was nothing blocking it or loose but it kept spitting fuel from random areas so i changed it out and tried to start it. With old gas and who knows where the timing is i did get it to start for a few seconds before the battery died from cranking it 2 months ago. All in all im thrilled so far and cant wait to figure the timing out. Never done it before but im positive im a tooth off. Id take a pic but we have tornadic weather out right now.

Heres a few pics for everyone.

Coltdaddy47 05-28-13 02:17 PM

Car does run. Waiting on a timing light. Had a clogged cat but thats solved. And carb needs adjusted but ill do that after the timing light. And i believe now that the temp gauge isnt working because i was told the small harness on the right of the motor could be yanked out completely. So i have a few more small things to do. Ill see what i can do about a video.

Coltdaddy47 06-02-13 12:30 PM

I found out the otherday the previous owner put the front pully on 1 bolt over so that solved my timing problem. Car was shootin flames down the road through my open headers. Then the next day my 10 month old battery gave up and i upgraded at autozone while they gave me full trade in on the old battery. I have 2 small problems with carb. If i press the gas peddle without the motor running no fuel comes out. If the motor runs it works fine. Stumped on this one. Second just yesyerday the car sputters at low rpm and wolnt idle now wothout bliping the gas pedel. Im also in the middle of hooking up a temp gauge as soon as i can get some wire and hook up my fuel pump to a toggle switch.

After using the hygrade rebuild kit on my last carb project from autozone most of the aluminium washers leaked and i was very disappointed with the paper gaskets and their fitment. So this time i will be doing another carb and going even more in depth than the last rebuild. I haveent got far as things have came up but there has been some polishing done and im trying to get the carb ready asap for kansascityRepu to spray me some powdercoat. I have lost all my carb information that sterling/yaw etc had done so now ill have to start from scratch again on finding that info unless someone has the information saved and can email it to me. Colten47 @yahoo.com

Coltdaddy47 06-10-13 10:57 PM

As if 3 carbs for 1 engine wasnt enough i just bought a 4th carb and picking it up in twelve hours to add into my collection. Who else has that dedication besides yaw and sterling?

Cookboy 06-11-13 08:04 AM

I've got 4. Just in case.

Coltdaddy47 06-11-13 12:20 PM

My plan is to tinker with them when im bored and rebuild atleast 3 of them for different conditions. Id like to get 2 older carbs as all 3 of mine are 84-5. Next i need to start collecting intakes.

Coltdaddy47 06-27-13 08:59 AM

Ok so i havent been able to work on the car in a while due to family emergencies. But as things are getting normal again im ready to get down to business again. I still have no fuel coming out of the carb if the motor is not running but works perfect if the motor is running. Also something new is my headers are getting red in 5 minutes of running the car. Cant find a vacum leak.
