79 SA22C resto/weekend build
Hey guys, Murray back with another rx7.
I'd like to start this build off with a fairwell to my 81 GSL i recently parted with https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...5f6f02ec5e.jpg Fairwell sweet prince Anyway, on with the show. Picked up this sweet and clean 1979 august of 78' chassis SA22C with a whopping 54,xxx miles! She came with a fully done never ran exhaust, a Pacesetter Header to a custom high temp high flow cat and a straight through muffler not doing a damn thang! :P :P The PO was in the process of removing rats nest and failing that he sold it to me! Its very clean inside and out and very complete. he included in the sale another spare parts carb, the rear louvers and a skii rack from the 70s. also a genuine set of Bosch plugs. new cap and rotor (found a hole in the one on the car) and a few other goodies I'll post once i receive. And now I'd love to introduce my 79 SA22C retired collector find. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...9955cdfc5b.jpg #DATARSE https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...00397a8706.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...99fd6ba5c9.jpg Fiances Navi sitting on 22inch Lexani Ice3 did the duty bringing home my baby. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...e5af5a33e6.jpg Meet the man who gave me my new found prized possession https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...68bddb0201.jpg SO CLEAN https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...5e92414b39.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...2bd5c54155.jpg Brought her home and first thing i knew needed to be done was remove the rats nest and it "should" be good to go. So i did that. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...f955194719.jpg When I first opened the hood https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...0edb10f09d.jpg Before when I first got it Next to pull out the nest and clean some things up. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...b5f5c18e24.jpg Got the nest out and got everything hooked up, i think... SHE LIVES Then this happened.... TIME FOR A REBUILD :egrin: |
I think your car startup is exactly like most of them that have been started after sitting a while.
Smoking like a freight train ATF/OIL treatment and then the carb shows its ugliness. I think Sorensons kit is the best kit I could find for the rebuild. Good luck to you on the car.. Its apparently still a Nikki under a racing beat hat. Here is a link on the kit and what it comes with. https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generati...icture-940068/ |
I didn't have time to post the rest of my progress so far. I have already rebuilt the Nikki and modded it. Sterlings accel pump mod, everything has been capped and plugged with qwiksteel. Threw some freeze plugs in while i have the manifold off to be stripped and cleaned. New cap, rotor, plugs(NGK eq14s).

Here's a walk-around after i got the idle mixture set and had her purring like a dragon should at 1500revs Here's a clip of in the car and a few more revs to tide me over till i get plates. AND last but not least an exhaust clip for my Rotard brothers! |
Hey all. It has been awhile since I have posted any progress, because well, nothing has happened. I have been steady working and collecting some things.
So far I have obtained an 86 SE FC front subframe, a GSLSE rear axle, 97 Kia Sportage front diff, 4.78 gear set, and Lake Cities intake manifold. I had the cat cut out of the car and took it to a Cars and Coffee locally. The freeze plugs I had installed leaked and I basically took the carb off and parked the car until now. Should have some updates in the next couple of months. Here are some videos I never posted of the car. Cheers, Murray |
what are you doing with the kia front diff?
|
I am going to be putting the 4.78 gearset from the kia front diff in my Gslse rear diff. Much cheaper than getting an 800 dollar Mazda gearset. This cost me around 150 shipped to my door.

Hey guys, Another little update until till weekend when S**t gets real.
So I changed a few of my plans. First The axle I had lined up fell through so I am stuck with the factory 79 drums. Also I do not have a means currently to rebuild all of the suspension, order coils, and install the SE FC subframe. SO. What I have currently in the mail coming are:
So while I was taking things apart and bumping things, you know getting ish done, I broke the coolant temp sensor wires. Now TBH with 50k on the clock you'd think it would be fine but let me warn you now when buying classics. No matter how low the mileage is, the wiring and hydraulic seals get exposed to so many heat cycles even when not driven that it just wears out. My arm brushed the sensor wires and they broke off. Unless you have a nice garage with a climate control and owned the car for its whole life. just my Jayztwocents™ So I De-pinned the X-01 bulkhead down to just the basics, oil level, oil pressure, coolant temp, & alternator(separate harness in the same location). I removed everything when I rebuilt the Nikki and stripped that to basically nothing. Mechanical Secondaries, choke(still needs to go), throttle cable, vacuum advance, fuel feed and return. That's it. No other wiring for the 12a. Gonna be in the garage again today. Hopefully can post another update tonight. I do need a little help when it comes to the charging system. I followed Jeezus on here with regard to the X-01 bulkhead and he never mentioned what year his car was. I basically did what he did but I have an entirely separate harness for my alternator which goes to the external regulator. So I THINK I am good on my wiring. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Here are some photos of the progress. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...8cc017d8a2.jpg Getting the stock loom unraveled. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...ab91e134c3.jpg All De-pinned from the X-01 Bulk Head New Hot Mess https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...3018a52bd5.jpg FSMs & Coffee meet? https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...7a9294e6e4.jpg Re-wrapped Loom Its getting there. Sorry for the grime. Will be clean in Time. :D https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...1efb71a7be.jpg Some more clean. Don't mind the Masters and booster sludge. I have new ones on the way and a booster delete plate from T3 Techno Toy Tuning. My camera is shiiiite, sorry. I'll be here to reply thanks again to everybody on this forum and the internet in general. Love you all Cheers, Murray |
HUGE PROGRESS
I got her running guys! She is NOT dead yet! I had thought she starved from fuel 2 years ago when i last drove it. But it was just the leaking freeze plugs that "shut off" the rear rotor and made me think i blew it up. Last I drove it, it was on one rotor when i pulled it into the garage after i did some tuning on the carb. RAN GREAT, but when i came to a stop it was on one rotor. i limped it home and had been parked since last week. All my wiring and work paid off, still have to upgrade to the electronic distributor but I wanted to make sure I was right on my wiring. I'll be posting more update pictures soon. Just gotta get my wifes iPhone for them glam shots ;) I got all of my steering installed and got really lucky. my new tie rods are installed. They are made in Japan by THREE FIVE 555 and I got the MOOG idler arm installed. Thanks to my buddy Ryan. He brought his ae86 over to do some body work. And of all the tools I have, I needed a big boy hammer. Got the joints broke free thanks to him. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...5830d6e56d.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...dd1ef507a0.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...7720728b95.jpg here is a video of it idling. I had to get new plugs again as always and a new battery because the civic battery just wasnt having it lol. it ded now. but after that she fired right up and man does she sound damn good! check it out on my youtube channel |
