1985 GSL, Sparkling Black Metallic

Hi everyone and happy new year! I hope everyone's car projects and car goals are being accomplished for 2021!
Here's my RX7! It's a 1985 GSL, original color was H1 brilliant black, with N/A 12a.

I knew this car was going to be a project the first second I saw the Craigslist ad. So I went for it.

Stripped the interior first, considering the interior will probably go back in LAST

The dash took about a week to do, but it did finally come out....

LEGALIZECHEY 01-09-21 09:59 AM

That's all for now. Need to sort through pictures....

LEGALIZECHEY 01-10-21 08:45 AM

The car was then moved to my families boat dealership and service yard...
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...e491350111.jpg

Engine was filthy on tear down, everything was stuck together because of how much burnt oil was around the dowel pins. But it came apart fairly easy, but the rotor housings are toast. The housing with the bigger section of flakey chrome is the front housing just a fyi

Getting the body and exterior stripped down so body prep can begin for a nice new paint job. Also planning on filling/shaving some holes on the exterior as well as a partial shave in the engine bay.... and that's why you'll see little yellow circles all over the body and engine bay....

What are your overall plans for this build? Subbed:icon_tup:

Looks like a very solid car to work with!! I'm also interested in what your plans are for the car. A 5sps swap in order with the rebuild?

Thanks guys, I’ve always wanted to go through a vehicle from the ground up and this is my chance. So, I’m planning on cleaning up the undercarriage, sealing it with epoxy primer and a nice base coat and clear. Same goes for the exterior, interior and engine bay.

Then onto suspension, I’m thinking of BC coilivers, All new bushings, beefy sway bars from racing beat, may need to design a different rear end link, I’ve heard the watts link causes binding issues? Please elaborate if anyone knows about the watts link problems...

As for the motor, I would ultimately like a nice bridged N/A 12a. But that subjects always up for debate lol. Ida carb, RB header and other cool points that can be added in will...

also, everything will be cleaned, polished, or powder coated before reassembly. This car will be sterile. You could perform surgery in the engine bay that’s how clean I want it...

and other than that? Just really clean and simple is my goal. I get a lot of inspiration from the lowrider community, mini truck community, Honda Civic community, American Hot Rod and Drag Racing culture as well as Japan’s custom car culture...

definitely excited to keep moving on it.

LEGALIZECHEY 01-11-21 09:19 AM

Oh and a little update for the week, this weeks focus is building a rotisserie for the RX7! Time to get those hard to reach places sealed up and shining like new...

LEGALIZECHEY 01-23-21 08:03 PM

Been working on plugging the holes in the firewall. Have a lot to go still... https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...9bd7a296f.jpeg
been working on the car after work, grind and fill and weld and grind and fill and weld haha
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...118ad3ac7.jpeg
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...ee3cadbae.jpeg
by the way, I’ve never welded before. This is my first project welding and fabricating. Also my first vehicle project... in over my head maybe?
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...2703e7010.jpeg
Started building the rotisserie also. Found these free plans online, it’s called “red wing steel rotisserie plans” on google. The download gives you a whole shopping list, and assembly manual.... pretty neat for being free. So I got two of these “upright” portions built, still need casters and plates for the feet. I forgot to take pictures of them whole, will do on Monday...

I switched welders here also.We have a nice mig welder at my shop and have been getting used to that. Need to learn how to dial in the machine for thin steel before doing body work with it though.... any settings suggestions from anyone maybe? I would like to be able to use this for body work, it’s easier to see what your doing... It’s a Millermatic 200, not sure what size wire I’m using, will find out Monday.

Toruki 01-25-21 08:25 AM

You're gonna have a lot of fun. Those plans red wing plans are great. It sounds like you have a good mentor for the welding. Just to be clear, those are tack welds, not the final ones for strength correct?

yeah, just tacks. One upright is finished I’ll post a pic today or tomorrow.

and as far as the welding goes, I have 3 people that are guiding me. 2 of them guys are body guys/ painters and they have built some serious custom cars!

Here’s one of the uprights, still need to mount the plates for caster wheels.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...250968505.jpeg
Here’s some pics of the mounts and pivot points that are going to be built...
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...ff3da72ff.jpeg
Not sure if everything will be made, probably just the pivots and the “hanger” bracket. And custom mounts to the body. Has anyone seeing this put an FB on a rotisserie themselves? Or even seen one in a rotisserie? Mounting points/suggestions are definitely welcome, because I haven’t really gotten that far yet... not sure where/ how to mount the car to the hanger :dunno:

LEGALIZECHEY 02-10-21 12:34 PM

Got my rotisserie stand all built! Need to make mounts for the car and it’s ready to go...

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...97b563a27.jpeg
I think they turned out perfect. The hardest part was finding affordable caster wheels. And I found these at servicecaster.com the jacks are “Torin big red jacks” in 8 ton version (only ones available nearby) and those were bought at homedepot. The frames and mounts were assembled and welded by me or friends... very excited to use these :)

1BADRX7 02-11-21 06:49 AM

The stands look great! Can't wait to see the car on it.

LEGALIZECHEY 02-23-21 02:48 PM

A little update, got the rear quarter glass removed. Stripped the doors out, now they are just shells. Mounted up the stands to measure out my cross-beam... I also pulled the steering column and steering box today... not much left before I can mount it and start flippin it around

Well, she's on the rotisserie now! Still need to fine tune the position and possibly remake the body mounts.... rear end and subframe has been removed, it's just a big beer can at the moment. The only things on the car still are the gas tank, e brake setup, and what's left of the fuel lines and hardware.....

I love these complete restorations.

raven12aFB 03-10-21 11:18 AM

Awesome...good job!!

Toruki 03-10-21 03:57 PM

Very cool and excellent work building that rotisserie!

LEGALIZECHEY 03-12-21 08:18 PM

Thank you toruki, raven and rich!

Today I made some big adjustments and found a better center line for the rotisserie's pivot points. For anyone in the future or anyone who is considering this now; if I were to rebuild this again I would put the rotisserie's pivot point directly inline with the bumper brackets (or possibly even lower). The center of gravity is good where I have it now, but could be even easier to spin if it was lower to the cars frame... Here's some pictures!

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...bf0febe405.jpg
Here's how it was mounted the first time. ^^ Bracket/mounting arms are too long making it hard to keep the stands together.... also pivot point was too high on the car here
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...1ad8171f04.jpg
Second try,^^ trying to make the pivot point lower on the car. This didn't work.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...1d0def5c61.jpg
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...883e62bcc7.jpg
Today, I decided to get rid of the mounting arms/ brackets all together, and mount the bumper brackets directly to the hanger of the rotisserie...
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...5b4c3ca86c.jpg
much easier to spin now!!!
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...4ee39fb1ab.jpg
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...55604baf47.jpg
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...88c4015d43.jpg
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...4fa0069373.jpg
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...c60e467a6b.jpg
This made it much easier to spin and made the overall length of the stands much shorter and more stout. I have no doubts about the setup failing now. I was too scared to spin it 360 today hahaha maybe soon though.... this has been a lot of fun already and I haven't even gotten started! I can't wait to get some real progress going. Next up is stripping the car inside and out and covering it with primer....... and a lot of body work :peace:

1BADRX7 03-13-21 05:56 PM

Mounting it without the bracket arms looks so much safer now. The initial mounting made it look like it would fold in the middle once you tried to spin it. Good job so far!

you are not wrong! The stands were actually slowly separating at the cross beam before. Now there is no movement. And I can rotate it by myself with it’s current balance point....

Banzai 03-15-21 12:55 PM

Excellent work and effort. I'm kind of surprised to see so much flaking and wear on the housings considering this was a automatic transmission car. Wondering if they over heated it at some point in its past life.

Richard Miller 03-26-21 02:42 PM

waiting for you to share your latest pictures

LEGALIZECHEY 03-26-21 09:17 PM

Hehe here you go rich (And Happy Friday everyone)

Yesterday the 7 got blasted down to bare metal! Dustless blasting actually, but pretty much the same... cost $1200 but was well worth it. I still need to get the hood and fenders done still but that can wait for now. Lot of bodywork stuff I want to do before paint....

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...06756473c.jpeg

The shop is getting busy for the summer so this is one of the last updates for a while.... probably going to use an etching primer and cover that with epoxy primer next... not sure when though, work is busy and until I can uncover it and primer it, the car is going to sit wrapped up.

sidenote, I would like a real nice look under the car as well. Any suggestions for undercoat/textured chip stuff? (that’s what that’s called right? Right.)

PittGaurd

You want PittGaurd. It’s a two part epoxy mastic. It is an industrial product used on bridges, oil tankers, and my Rx7 . The steel will rust away and in 1000 years the epoxy will bear witness to the existence of the car. Don’t do Por15. It’s not a bad choice, but PittGaurd is better.

I’m definitely going to look more into pittguard! That looks pretty sharp!

LEGALIZECHEY 11-23-21 07:28 PM

HI everyone! I’m back! Work is slowing down and I can start a little project on the side..... so I started with collecting as many new parts for the front suspension and working on painting the subframe.

there are two pockets on either side of the subframe (directly next to the unibodys frame rails) and they were incredibly annoying to me so I filled them with some plates I made. Welded them in, spot putty the grooves and primed the subframe.

Working on buying new parts, unfortunately I need new lower control arms.... bummer. But at least they’ll be new.... everything else will be brand new and I’m using a racing beat sway bar instead. Debating colors still, so everything is black primer for now....

LEGALIZECHEY 03-22-22 11:12 AM

Hi everyone! Home sick from work today :( figured I’d share where I’m at with the car. Now, I was planning on showing this process AFTER it was completed but, time takes a toll on big projects and I’m bored, so here’s where I’m at with the car! I’ve began p*ssing off all the true enthusiasts and collectors by cutting out the spare tire carrier (more room for fuel cell) and I’ve decided I wanted to mini tub the rear end. Now, that’s not exactly easy on our cars, for a couple reasons.

1.) The frame rails go outboard toward the rear bumper on these cars. Meaning the fender well isn’t symmetrical. So it’s not just a cut, stretch and fill. Like an old Chevy would be.... might have to fabricate fenders to fill in the new wells. Vs moving the stock ones over and filling the gap with sheet metal

2.) LOTS of pinch welds and lots more hidden when you start cutting.

3.) once you do this, you’re on your own. There are so few FB’s that have been tubbed in the rear and even fewer that are willing to share how they did it. So imagination and determination is key....

and 4.) how friggin sick is it to see big tires tucked under the rear fender (unmodified rear fender) of a little rotary rx7!! Too cool in my opinion....
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...38b039e2e.jpeg

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...44f0f03ce.jpeg

I am not afraid of the work or the outcome. I have great support around me and I’m told I’m working in the right direction constantly....

also, some of you might mention that a back half would’ve been easier, yes it would’ve. Also more costly, more fabrication, and more time being built. My goal is to get this car back on its own suspension by the end of THIS YEAR....

can I do it? Stick around and find out I guess...

thanks for looking everyone, nice comments only please :smoker:

thanks man and likewise, been watching your progress slowly build into something real nice...

I’m still navigating what to do about the rear end but I’m thinking it’s getting a somewhat narrowed ford 9” rear end... maybe the 8.8” but I’m not sure yet. But I’m pretty sure I’m getting rid of the stock rear end.... And going with something more drag race based

That sounds awesome......been thinking about an 8.8 but just for the looks....not for drag racing.....

And on mine I hit a bump on the road. Tried to start her this past weekend with the help of a friend and she didn't start. It was getting flooded so took the top of the Nikki off and adjusted the floats and fixed that problem ....then we trouble shoot the no starting issue and determined that the rear rotor has an apex seal stucked😪 ....so I got it on an ATF diet and spinning it by hand and hopefully this coming weekend it will run....if not I'll rent a pick up truck and give her a nice pull and give her a running start.... hopefully will work.....🤞

It was getting flooded so took the top of the Nikki off and adjusted the floats and fixed that problem ....then we trouble shoot the no starting issue and determined that the rear rotor has an apex seal stucked😪 ....so I got it on an ATF diet and spinning it by hand and hopefully this coming weekend it will run....if not I'll rent a pick up truck and give her a nice pull and give her a running start.... hopefully will work.....🤞

may be time to pull the motor and give her a refresh :dunno:
