This is my 3rd FB, all have been Series3. I've been dreaming and scheming on an S5 FB for many years now. This time around, it's going to be raw N/A rotary power.
After years of putting feelers out, emailing phony craigslist sellers, and almost giving up hope of getting back into an FB, I found the gem I had been seeking. Meet Selene https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1360303161 https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1360303161 Hm where's the RE-EGI? https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1360303161 I see what u did there... LOL! at the great a-ha moment i just had because it now makes sense why your cars were so "similar". :)
|
Looking good! Man I haven't heard anyone call it a "5 letter" in ages, makes me feel old lol

Will do that when i pull the interior to install Hushmat & stereo this weekend or next week (notice the lack of headunit) - pics to follow I'd be interested in pics of the sound deadening install, I am considering the same thing on my car as it tends to sound like you're in an enclosed go-kart sometimes. It would be nice for sound quality and I wouldn't have to listen to the wind noise as much. |
What started as a simple wire fix...
6 Attachment(s)
Needed to fix the plug for my trailing ignition - the other day I was playing around with wire tuck ideas and snapped the 30 year old wire in half :( no tach or trailing.
https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1360630297 Then I noticed that my fan belt was TOAST. Literally falling apart and super loose. Thank's for holding out so long, baby! Sorry to push it like that. I promise I wont any more. Thankfully (thanks to ArmyOfOne) I had a spare belt lying around, so I pulled the fan to put that on. Well... I figure since the fan is off I might as well see how permanant the grime is.... https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1360630297 Ah i see - it totally comes off. Well I can't just stop half way... so the rest has to come off. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1360630297 And then Put it all back together. All this just to make a "quick trip" to the store to get ready for the interior re-do. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1360630297 -----

It would be nice for sound quality and I wouldn't have to listen to the wind noise as much. Interior re-do and Hushmat prep: Ah yes. That smell. It's not THAT bad.... but then, it kinda is. Every once in a while you get a waft of it, and its like, "Is that me? No, no i'm fairly sure I showered sometime this week...." It is, in fact, the car. I mean, it's 30 years old so i'm not blaming it. But a lot can happen in 30 years. Smokers, water, spills, who knows. This car has definitely seen its share of all of it. Time for a deep clean - get in there and clean up those hard-to-reach places. Out come the seats. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1360632015 Center console and carpets - out they go. And... what's this? Ah HAH! I see you, water logged, mildew festering carpet liner! Out you go! We have located one of our leaks. More than likely the floor plug directly beneath. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1360632015 All carpet and liner removed. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1360632015 https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1360632015 A wire brush to get the bits of liner that got melted into the sound deadening. After that, deep clean. Time to scrub off the mold from the pools of water - ended up both driver and passenger side were soaked. No rust though! Lucky! must be a newer leak. Will have to seal that up. Plus, I need to clean the surface in prep for the Hushmat anyways https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1360632015 A few small spots of surface rust. Wire wheel them down and hit them with some Rust Tough, and we should be ready to install some Hushmat! https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1360632032 And that took me up to 8:30pm on Sunday. Time to call it. Will finish the hatch scrubbing, leak sealing, and rust repair up next. |
you know ... if i didn't know better, it would be easy to look at the condition of that car and think you really don't have to put much effort into "building" it. yes, it's THAT gorgeous!

Alright. Past weekend update.
I have scrubbed every friggin square inch of this beast with a scrubber brush and simple green. Removed all rust spots save for one around the shifter. Cut out some speaker mounts, and began doing the Hushmat install. And now what matters most, the pics: https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361257980 I'm choosing to leave the holes open. I have had to put the window back in its track enough times to know not to seal that shit up. i will need to replace the windows this year anyways, so might as well not waste the mat https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361257980 Speaker mounts - 3/4" MDF. BE SURE to wear eye protection and some sort of breather mask. You dont want to inhale shit when you're working. Especially MDF. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361257980 https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361257980 https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361257980 The GOODS https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361257995 Wow this forum demolishes the quality of the photos... Weekend of Feb 23rd - stereo
5 Attachment(s)
Whew! So i told everyone I was dead so they would leave me alone for the weekend and locked myself in the garage. The interior has been completely pulled for about 2-3 weeks now and I'm getting antsy to go drive. So I gotta get shit done!
Last Friday I finally got all my seals, plugs, and cover plates in. Grind off any surface rust, use some silicone to seal them up, ready to be covered with some hushmat :) https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361814563 Ground out some rust spots and spot painted with some Rust Tough (love that stuff) https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361814563 o noes! this is almost the last of it. I found a cancer spot on the passenger rear wheel well :( will have to take it in and have it welded up. This looks like just a bad seal around the shifter hole. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361814563 https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361814563 Now she's all prepped and ready for the next phase! FINALLY. I enjoy taking my time and doing things right, but I couldn't stand seeing those speakers taunting me on the floor day in and day out. Something had to be done about it, and she's finally ready: https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361814563 |

First to sheets of Hushmat down! Many more to go.
https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361815027 Rear speaker plate mounted https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361815027 They suggested I use butcher paper to draw out templates. Honestly I found that to be a waste. I would cut the piece by eye / test fitting. This stuff is super handy. A handy tip for installers: I discovered that if you start by sticking down the far corner, you can pull the backing off by pulling towards you, and as you pull it sucks the matting down to the floor while removing the liner. Its plasticized, so it (usually) wont tear. You do this for each little bit or 'arm' of the matting, this method allows you to reach some really obscure places with the mat. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361815027 /\ That, leads to this \/ https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361815027 I went up inside the wall about 8-10", as far as i could reach my hand up. Front Speakers
5 Attachment(s)
Oh man. The front speakers. So this is my 3rd FB that I've done this on. I dont know why i keep coming back for more. These things are a royal pita. Seriously why do i insist on speakers larger than 2" in the front!?
Because they sound better and carry more mids. Thats why. And so here I go again. However, having done it several times already at least I knew what to look for. I had to modify both speaker grilles, and the drivers side mounting plate as well. On the fronts I don't pre-mount the plate, its most efficient to get long screws that go through the speaker mounts, grille, mounting plate, and wall. I hate doing this, I hate drills anywhere near speakers. Don't ask me why. Ok I slipped and punctured a speaker once. And not just some shitty cheapo speaker, an MB Quart (old, better version) *hangs head* PRE-DRILL. Don't ruin your speaker, MDF riser, or wall by trying to save time. You wont, you'll have to do it all over again and maybe buy a new speaker when the power drill slips and you punch through the speaker. Passenger side front top corner is blocked by the heater. I usually pre-mount the speaker in this corner, then drill the other 3 bolts into the wall. I had to cut away the grille to get this to fit, the mount and speaker fit just fine: https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361815516 Drape the speaker wire over the top of the speaker and line it up with the stock wire divot at the top of the speaker hole. we'll seal it up later with silicone at the final stage. The plate is made from MDF that i sprayed with semi-flat black Rust Tough. Have I mentioned yet I love that stuff? Dries enough to handle within 2 hours. MDF dries in 45min to an hour if put in front of a blower / heater. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361815516 The mount extends to the very limit of the stock kick panels. I mount it over the top of the door trim finish piece. Before permanantly screwing it on to the car I took some simple green and cleaned it real nice. Little scrubber brush from O'Reiley's for the win again! https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361815516 Driver's side speaker you can access all 4 screws if you un-mount the fuse block and the little brown relay below the steer column. The hood release is in the way, so I had to cut out a bit of the speaker mount and grille frame. Didn't have to cut the grille like I did on the passenger side though. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361815516 All up in my grill, yo https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361815516 |
Speaker chamber isolation
5 Attachment(s)
So a lot of folks who have door mounted speakers talk about how much more mids and mid-bass they get by totally sealing the door chamber. Makes sense, as if you want a ported speaker you need to engineer the port length and diameter based on the speaker requirements.
I had originally planned on blocking off the sidewall channel where the speaker mounts and creating either a sealed or ported "box", using the holes in the frame as a port. So i ran the numbers on the speakers to calculate box size, both sealed and ported. Basically what I came up with: Ported: for a ported box built into the sidewall, it would need to be rediculously small with a port length of 74". I dont want to route 6 feet of 2" tubing through the sidewalls. So, sealed box: For a sealed box, I wanted to isolate the narrow frame channel where the speaker mounts into. No go - there is so little volume in there it is too small. Bascially, I realized the Mazda engineers already solved this problem. Hm. Go figure. Using the same ideologoy as the door-mounted speaker, I sealed up the sides of the walls to direct the sound better, isolate road noise to speaker noise, and create a a large sealed(ish) box for the speaker. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361816413 The only space left open is near the very rear of the car in the bottom corner, about this is about 2"x2" square. On the driver's side this is the hole behind the hole for the gas tube. On the passenger side its the hole where the antennae cable runs. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361816413 12 awg speaker wire run. Exhausting. Time for some refreshment https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361816413 And finally! Sunday evening at 9:45pm, the fruition of all my weekend's efforts. Speaker cable run, speakers mounted, Hushmat installed https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361816413 https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1361816413 To finish things off I need to run the power cable, create an amp mount bracket (will go under passenger storage bin), and then tap into the factory head unit line-level output. Oh and get that damned wheel well rust taken care of :( |
Thanks a lot! Just one more thing to add to the To Do list for the FB I guess, the list goes on and on.
You used Hushmat here I see, how would you rate your overall experience with the product? I've done some researching on the different mats available but not many 7 owners will be honest about the experience. Also, it would be cool if you had a sound clip of road noise, then a clip of music playing both before and after the installation. I know in my 7 the road noise is terrible and I can't hear the music to save my life even though I've upgraded everything possible. Anyways, nice job and keep the pics coming  |

I LOVE working with this stuff. Once I figured out the technique, i was flying! Well actually i take a long time to do anything, but it wasn't obnoxiously difficult. for the hard to reach places, i found cutting smaller chunks made it much easier. Also, the technique you use to determine where to cut each sheet can make a huge difference. I suggest looking at how they did the stock matting and going from there. Learning to do angles, corners, and curved surfaces took only one sheet before I figured it out.

I know that before / after stuff is the best way to demo a thing, and I seriously thought about doing that for this project. A few things made me decide against it - a camera's mic can't really pick up all the nuances of road noise, the pressure you feel on your ear after an hour of driving, etc. If I had a field recorder I would have used that, but alas I do not currently have one.

I think I should be able to affix it back in though. Maybe even bungee crimps or something. To truly do it you have to remove the dash. What brilliant engineer came up with that one?? |

Very nice! I too think a S5 SE is a great route to go, and you can't beat silver! It looks like you're running an unmodified SE lower manifold. I didn't know that was a direct swap onto a S5 keg. That's good info to know.
Are you planning to stick with the Dellorto or go to the FI setup? |

Are you planning to stick with the Dellorto or go to the FI setup? As for Dellorto / EFI - I should be getting in a box of EFI goodies this afternoon from RotaryShack. Haltech F9, polished fuel rails, 3" TB inlet duct, etc. I love the vintage aspect of the Dellorto - and it runs so well! But its crap for fuel economy (12-14mpg) and subject to variable performance based on altituted and weather. Honestly though, right now I'm focusing on finishing up the interior. I'm a big proponent of "one project at a time" - and if I lump all of my current projects into "interior" i guess i could say thats true. "Interior Project" See what I did there? Just one project at a time  which entails:
THEN I can get to other items on the list. Sequencing. Yikes. |
Painted interior panels - SEM Burgundy #15063
2 Attachment(s)
I've had a box of vinyl / plastic paint for over a month, waiting for the right time to paint. So this weekend I decided that the biggest thing holding me back from getting the interior refresh done and everything re-assembled was restoring those door cards and interior panels.
To begin with I used SEM surface prep cleaners, one for Vinyl (#38343) and one for Plastics / Leather (#38353). https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1363019743 Next up was two quick coats of Bulldog Adhesion Promoter (Which i found out you can get at O'Reiley's) and then one medium coat of SEM Color Coat Burgundy (#15063) followed by several light coats for even texture and coloration. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1363019743 The process was painless and straightforward - just dont rush anything and it will turn out very well. Surface prep is of utmost importance. ALL dirt, grime, waxes, grease, armorall, must be removed for proper adhesion. The vinyl prep agent helps soften and clean the vinyl - the plastic cleaning agent scrubs the hard plastic down to bare surface (it WILL damage the finish on extremely sun faded parts - but thats OK as we end up painting them!) As always, take your time and dont spray too thick. Also complete your spray stroke across the entire width of the part you're spraying. 5-10 minutes between coats. I always get lazy and end up doing a few mid-sweep switch backs. You'll need to go over those with another thin, even layer. Will post more pics when I re-assemble everything so you can get an idea how amazingly close this Burgundy color is. I would say its about a 95% match to OEM burgundy - just slightly more purple / less red than stock. |
cool, the factory color is a bit weird, its got a lot of orange in it, of all things.
|
Love the paint job, I'm looking at doing something similar to my plastic interior parts next winter. I'll actually be considering many of these same interior things in my car for the future, keep the suggestions coming
|
Day after recap- they say to use a lint free cloth during the prep phase.
Confirmed. USE A LINT FREE CLOTH!! It isn't bad, but if you get way up close you can see lint embedded in the paint in some small areas. Not bad enough for a do-over, I doubt anyone will ever get that close to see them - you literally need to be 8" away and shining a light on it to see the imperfections. |
...
|
SEM is the only one I've found so far that's even close to the factory burgundy, at least in a can. I'm sure a paint shop could mix you a custom dye, if you wanted to pay. Most others I found were too red (maroon.)
I've been using the SEM 15063 on my FC interior (got rid of the automatic seat belts - had to replace all the trim around the doors), and I'll be using it on a few parts on my grey GSL-SE's interior that have turned brown. SEM has their own adhesion promoter, I got that as well as the plastic and vinyl prep products. So far, so good. The seat adjuster handle I did 3 years ago seems to be holding up well. |

I've heard nothing but great things about SEM (when done properly)!
Todays progress - March 12, 2013 Received some electronics wiring goodies in the mail. I now have NO excuses to 100% finish my interior / stereo project. I decided to start by getting some shiny gold plated RCA input jacks and mounting them to the factory tape deck chassis: https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1363152665 Started with 1/16", then 1/8", then 1/4" drill bit: https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1363152665 I left the outside totally factory finish, and used a dremel to grind away the inside of the chassis for a clean and solid ground (RCA plug itself is ground): https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1363152665 https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1363152665 https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1363152665 As you can see there is PLENTY of clearance, i'm talking 3-4mm: https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1363152734 We will then be wiring these RCA jacks in parallel to the factory "input" (blue / green) on the tape deck rear PCB: https://www.rx7club.com/attachments/...headunit-1-jpg |

So - we have our inputs, now we can wire up the outputs! We need to go from 6-pin DIN to RCA dual output.
Step one: slice a very expensive RCA cable in half https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1363247378 Pull back the sheath and separate the wires https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1363247378 https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1363247378 After soldering them onto the 6-pin DIN connector - make sure to double check your work with a multi tester. Glad i did - somehow i managed to get the ( - ) signals reversed for L and R!!! I swore to both the Old Gods and the New. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1363247378 Ground down some of the shielded earth casing and soldered the stuffing wire / sheilding to it https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1363247378 |

Those turn signal lenses

Hey, do you know the source for those clear lenses on the turn lights? I can't recall seeing those before. I would like to have a set of those for my next project.
Where in Washington are you located??? I am near Carnation. I have a 1984GSL with the same interior as yours, in similar condition. Did an engine swap last year, might be of interest if you have not seen it. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3936025/1984-mazda-rx-7/ See my "owner's other rides" for some of my other RX-7 projects. Your project is really looking good. I think the gas strut for the hood would be a nice touch - I have done a couple more for other 1st gen RX-7 friends, and they all love it - let me know if you want the details. |

I prepped the vinyl and other plastic parts by wiping them down with lacquer thinner - got them pretty wet, so that the vinyl actually softened to the point of getting some ripples in it, then immediately sprayed on the paint. Everything went back to normal after the paint dried overnight, and it all looks good today, no tendency to fade, chip, flake or wear after about 16 years and 40,000 miles. (Except the shift knob - wore all the paint off that.) I do keep it garaged - sunlight is what kills interiors. I painted the shifter surround and center console facia panel the with the same color because I did not like the look of the silvery color with the maroon - just personal preference. |

I am not clear on what you did here? Clear nail polish somehow ungreened the burgundy horn button?
Of all the faded interior pieces the horn button is the one that bothers me the most. Followed closely by the shifter knob. Best part is if you mess up, just do another coat! its clear!!! The vinyl horn button itself has been prepped with SEM vinyl prep, Bulldog adhesion promoter, and SEM Burgundy spray dye/paint. Stillettoman - I'm in Eastern WA (for now - maybe seattle later this year) - will hit you up for that hood strut. I've been thinking a bit about that actually! As far as paint holding up - Only on week 2, and only 3 panels in the car so far. however, after scraping and rubbing up against the storage bin frame - no scratches yet! Very pleased. I also took the time to prepare and clean all surfaces prior to spraying. ~Geoff |
You Rock!
Heck of a work over you're giving her... I'm sure she feels pretty and loved. Do you have a working old stereo? I have NOTHING in mine. Well, I have speaker covers (haven't looked further, as there is no stereo unit). I have been totally distracted by fluid leaks... How many are possible? I'm touching on every system.
Nice work... I'm inspired by your thoroughness. |
