Getting ready to start putting the turbo setup on the motor but I am having a major problem finding a way to get the nuts on the intake studs... Anyone ever put one of these on, that can enlighten me?:egrin:

Cool cut outs for the MSD boxes. What did you use to cut it? Looks Straight in the pics.

Zip cut and die grinder.

Deepwell 12mm with a magnet, to get those nuts on. Use a strong rare earth magnet of apropriate size inside the socket, then stick the nut on and it should stay put as you begin threading it on the stud. Note: use some washers behind the magnet to shim it up if need be, but not to where it's touching (sticking directly to) the nut, as this will probably leave the magnet itself inside the manifold and then good luck fishing it out!

Deepwell 12mm?

Boriquaguerrero 07-19-11 01:49 PM

another boosted fb  where u bough and how did u intalled the braided radiator hose?

cfamilyfix 07-19-11 02:14 PM

ooooooh....this looks interesting. I'm in. Subscribed.

The rad hose is just a braided sleeve, underneath is just a rubber hose.

So far for this build we have:
2 msd boxes hooked up direct fire (1 box per coil) and the trailing just stock on a blaster coil
Aluminum rad with dual fans
Lightweight flywheel
Br9es plugs
Ugeo wideband
Holly blue fuel pump and regulator
Carter 500 carb
Tochico 5 way adjustable suspension (all 4 corners)
S4 N/A tranny
GSL Rear end
Manual Boost control

Just gotta put the oilpan on with the oil drain in it, make a blockoff plate for the omp, and find a socket that will work to get these intake manifold nuts on and we should be ready to do a test fire. If it fires up and idles we will pull the dizzy and drop in a locked one set the timing then work on carb jetting and tuning.

Hoping to be tuning by saturday if i can get the socket i need

Nice, that should give you 4 weeks driving before the snow flies...

john smack 07-19-11 08:52 PM

Lol yeah no doubt, it should be fun before that happens if this old 12a even puts up with some boost for more than a day.

john smack 07-21-11 10:23 AM

Damn I cant believe I cant find a socket to fit into the intake manifold... Why did they make the hole so damn small.
Went to the snap-on guy to get the thinest 12mm socket he had. He shows a demonstration on how there sockets fit in all these tight places. So excitedly the socket is bought... get home and it is still way too big.

Jeff20B 07-21-11 10:48 AM

Question: will the stock nut even fit through the holes in the mani? Or are you supposed to use some special one?

john smack 07-21-11 12:11 PM

Yeah i have the nut on the stud but no way I can get a 12mm in there to tighten it

Jeff20B 07-21-11 12:27 PM

That's weird. Maybe you'll have to make a tool. Grind down a socket or something.

john smack 07-21-11 12:40 PM

yeah thats what I am thinking I will have to grind one down

Jeff20B 07-21-11 12:44 PM

If yo grind one down, will it have enough material left to torque the nuts to whatever tightness they need to be? Intake hardware doesn't need much. I just use a regular 3/8" ratchet and push until it feels correct. Educated arm over here.

I haven't broken one yet. They're only 8mm x 1.25. That's like 14 to 17 foot pounds or something maybe. I'd have to look in the book.

john smack 07-21-11 12:59 PM

yeah i never had a problem with my ground down sparkplug socket for b9es's

BeenJaminJames 07-21-11 07:47 PM

Crows foot wont work?

remove the studs and get some 2 3/4 long bolts...looks like someone messed with the holes on the intake.....Attachment 436764

Jeff20B 07-22-11 12:13 AM

Wow. I learned something.

john smack 07-22-11 12:40 AM

Yeah I went out and looked and someone at some point drilled the holes out and threaded them.

Well before king posted that info on the intake manifold we had already built a special tool and got the nuts tight, then we kept on bolting stuff up

Ok we got it started today, sounds good. When it idles the afr reads 13.3-14.3, does that seem decent?
Also we are planning on taking it for a ride to see where we are with the jetting in the carb, how do we do this without blowing it up? Slowly rev into it?
