Why Did The GRINCH Steal Christmas?... To Fund This Build....

11 Attachment(s)
Hey guys been looking around for a while on here gathering information and what not about the rx7 and ideas for this build. This is my first rx7/rotary and turbo build so any info would be awesome! I ended up trading my built k24 crx that used for auto cross and hpd days but have always had a thing for the fd. So I found a fd that the guy claimed to be legit and did compression test. Well end up being a bunch of bs so back to square one. Fast forward and I just dropped my 13b off to Elliot and we set a plan of attack for the rebuild and goals of this build. I also put down for one of his twin scroll manifolds and got the adaptronic ecu and bunch of other goods. Lets get on to some pictures.

Did a lil bit of work today, got the tank dropped as well as the stock lines. Will -6 feed be enough to support 500or more on e85? thinking of doing a anti swirl tank like johns. Or do you guys think I should do a -8 feed and -6 return?

well got some stuff for my fuel setup in the mail today. Now time to get to work on the tank and finishing striping the bay to get resprayed since previous owner did a horrible job on it.

I'm most likely going to run a pressure sensor to each pump and run to the ecu so it will be able to tell if one pump is bad and save the motor.

is that a Rywire harness? those are definitely the way to go if you're doing some sort of plug-n-play and dont want to make your own harness.

check with elliot on the wastegate vband flanges on his manifolds. i have the same manifold and the same wastegates as you and both of my wastegate flanges on the manifold didn't seal up to the tial wastegates. elliot says it's because he usually uses turbosmart vband flanges and they aren't exactly the same as the tial ones. he's sending me a new manifold because of this.

for 500whp i would run a -8 line for the fuel feed, then split it up in the bay to both rails. i dont think a single -6 can handle that much e85.

and yet another adaptronic. jeez. where is all the Haltech love?

anyway, it looks like you're doing things right. looking forward to updates.

jacobcartmill 07-04-13 11:08 PM

also, what turbo is that? i'm running a 6262 .84 ournal bearing and it was perfect for HPDE at Road Atlanta. very responsive and helping me keep up with 911s on the track :)

made 320whp at 11psi and very responsive.

Grinch 07-05-13 04:29 AM

Yes sir, it's a rywire harness. Elliot used tial vband on mine I'm sure of. It's a 6266 t4 divide 1.0 ar. Might sell it and get a garret just to have water cooled lines for turbo.

sweet!

FWIW, i have the oil-only 6262 and i've had no problems with its "health." i spent several hours on the dyno, i DD the car right now, and i did six 20 minute sessions at Road Atlanta getting up to about 145mph in 5th gear. no smoke, nothing weird from the turbo. granted, this was mostly done at 9-10psi, but i don't foresee any problems running higher boost. just make sure you have a non-kinked -8 (or -10) oil drain for it. the journal bearings don't use a restrictor and need a nice big oil drain. i am running a -8 drain.
i think these are great turbos for the money.

if you do want to spend the extra $$$ on a nice garrett unit though, i happen to have a GTX35R 1.06 T4 for sale (i actually did the garrett core exchange through elliot, so it's a brand new CHRA).

Grinch 07-05-13 04:01 PM

Thanks, if I sell the 6266(Elliot says ill be fine with it) I'd get his garret that he sells can't think name off my head but same as Shawn's red fd. Thanks Elliot can't wait to get it in the mail. Now just for my motor =] let's stud it to be safe.

Grinch 07-17-13 07:43 PM

not much updates right now, just been taking out all the interior and trying to make up my mind to cage or not. About 90% ready to send off for a full respray after order a 99 spec bumper.

Bubble Tech 07-18-13 10:13 AM

looking good, digging the manifold/dual wastegate set up!

Grinch 07-21-13 09:09 AM

Well finally got the trans and diff out. Trying to decide if should drop the cash this winter and do full cage and some other stuff. Dose any one know we're I can get a carbon unroof delete? Also is there a way to get bearings in the control arms instead of poly bushings.

Dliverance 07-21-13 09:36 AM

I know a member on here made his own sunroof delete and I think he sold the mold. Someone else made a cap that covered almost the entire roof but I can't find info on either of them now.

Grinch 07-21-13 10:23 AM

Yea I've been looking for one as well :( maybe that vender carbonrx has something like that. Guess ill keep looking and let you know if I find anything.

jacobcartmill 07-21-13 04:18 PM

i've been looking for a carbon sunroof delete too. can't seem to find one.

tomsn16 07-21-13 04:56 PM

Are you planning on SCCA autoX and if so what class...SSM or XP?

dreamofit 07-21-13 06:06 PM

did you buy it sight-unseen? I guess I'm asking why the compression was a surprise.

Should make quite a nice sound at WOT

Grinch 07-21-13 08:20 PM

our auto cross club go by nasa rules so Ill be in (rus) we tie the top three together cuz not many in those class. The guy I bought it from claimed to do a comp test and said 120 on both so took his word :( yes they should make some nice noise ;) I'm debating about running them into the dp though.

Check with Ronin Speedwork for FD sunroof plug. I picked up a fiberglass FD sunroof plug from them recently.

Grinch 08-15-13 12:46 PM

well took the jump and just order a set of ohilins dfv for the fd cant wait to receive them!

evo_koa 08-15-13 12:51 PM

is that the pettit bumper?

Grinch 08-15-13 01:01 PM

no its one off ebay, urethane

Dliverance 08-20-13 11:29 AM

Are you going to get the front lip too? If you are I'll look and see where I got mine for you. I think I paid $200 for it shipped from TX to FL and it was a brand new oem Mazda lip.

Grinch 08-20-13 01:13 PM

i really want an autoex lip but wow that's costly lol. On that note think I'm order it from shine auto in Kevlar to match the rest of things I wanna get. Well haven't decided if kevlar will go good with daytona blue. Did that stiffen the bumper up from flexing at all deliverance?

Dliverance 08-21-13 07:05 AM

Yeah when I mounted the lip and undertray it became pretty solid. I have three bolts on each side, the undertray bolts and about 8 bolts holding it down on the top. If I end up keeping mine I'm going to try to mount the oem metal piece to the top to give it a little bit more lift too.

evo_koa 08-21-13 09:37 AM

the ohlins are sick, youll love them!!!

Grinch 08-21-13 12:27 PM

Lol hope so, Friday can't come any sooner =]

evo_koa 08-21-13 02:21 PM

where did you order them from?

Grinch 08-21-13 05:41 PM

Got them from rich)(goodfellafd3s while we discussed buying a set of new door handles from him. Feel lucky as got the last set and those should be on the way as well =]

Grinch 08-21-13 05:41 PM

Dliverance 09-10-13 08:22 PM

I'm going to do a small write up on how to mate the bumper to the oem metal bar for better fitment.

If one were to dynamat the whole interior of a car is it quite effective at eliminating road noise?

Grinch 09-19-13 09:53 PM

That was in the car when I got it. To me looks like wouldn't do much how it is. I'm actually in middle of doing the whole inside from firewall back and we'll see. I won't know if it help cuz never drove the car before this build.

dgfab 09-19-13 10:57 PM

The biggest regret about my first car build(not and FD) was not spending time there. It was so noisy to drive even with a quiet exhaust. I'm starting an FD soon and I'm gonna to sound proof the crap out of the inside lol.
