My first Rx7, Doing it Right
 

Well i picked up my first Rx7 in late May this year nearly bone stock with some needed TLC.

Car:
roughly 86k
and 15k on a reman in the car.
stock aside from the PFC, Intake, and turbo back exhaust.

Car would not run over 4.5k rpm due to a random fuel cut because the prior owners suck.:lol:

My overall plans for the car are to make it a fast "highway" car as well as a fun car for a few track days a year.

I bought the car with the intentions of going with a large single turbo and solid fuel system.

Shortly after buying the car I started talking with Robert (3rdgensleeper, theBuilder and Fabricator- I was the assistant:lol:) about the steps i wanted to take on building the car to my expectations. This prompted me to bust out the credit card :nod:

I took the car over to Roberts and we got started removing basically everything in the engine bay. Fortunately parts started rolling out of Robert build that he no longer needed, but would work perfectly in my build so this saved me bit.

Roberts first words of advice for the build was to ditch the PFC, and go with the big boys ECU.... The Adaptronic ( Thanks Elliot at Turblown/Turbosource for the ECU!!)

So Current mod list to the car are as Follows ---
-Adaptronic ECU
-4 AEM Smart Coils
-S366 Turbo
-FFE rails with ID2000 sec and ID1000 prim
-E85
-single 340 stealth in tank
-Custom Surge tank with 2 Bosch 044s ( thanks Robert)
-Custom V-ish IC setup :lol: (again Thanks Robert)
- 8AN feed from surge tank with Fuel Lab Filter to Fuel rails
- 6AN return from FPR to surge tank
-Flex Fuel Sensor
-Ceramic coated turbo, UIM, LIM, Water pump housing.
-Cleaned up harness and removed all rats nest parts.
-ACT 6 Puck disc and Extreme PP
-ACT pro-light flywheel
-Relocated battery to the rear
-Solid Motor mounts
-Greddy Oil Catch Can
-Pettit AST
-AN Fittings FOR DAYS! :lol:

Solid mounts are not going to be fun on anything you drive on, looks like you have some work ahead of you

you driven with any?
I daily drove a FD with a half bridge for years with solid mounts. These cars are not meant to be luxury cars... I guess its preference but I personally love the feel of a solid mount gives you a ton more feedback to whats doing on under the hood. I was the one to recommend it to him, knowing full and well how they are on the street.

Yes I do drive with a set, wish I had pulled them when I had the engine out. Maybe it's a RHD thing but there is nothing nice about feeling the engine run in your arms after about an hour it gets old

Odd I never really got tired of feeling the feedback from the car, I guess it's really just a preference thing and what you're expecting out of a sports car.

We removed the fuel tank and fuel lines from under the car and relocated the battery to the hatch and mounted the Surge Tank + Fuel Filter

We decided that the Exedy Stage 1 Clutch wouldnt be efficient and decided to swap Robert's ACT Prolite Flywheel and Extreme PPlate over to my car and i purchased a new 6 Puck.

Motor remounted and changed the color of the Compressor housing on the turbo... Purple was too much for me..

Agreed. Unfortunately wiring/electrical is an area that most DIY types lack understanding and compentency or are just afraid of. I think this is further aggravated by electrical's lack of sex appeal, even though it's crucial to everything--I wonder how many builds have failed due to poor wiring.

Exactly, 3rdgen. I too am an EE, for 30 yrs., lol. I still see far to many abominations. So I trust you understand the nature of the problem....

So it looks like this OP is off to a nice, thoughtful build. And I'm sure we've encouraged him to give due dilligence to the wiring. ;)

I keep a clean flow for each component, there are some rats nest problems up front that I have already terminated and am just removing for simplification. The wiring I have done has all been straight pathed with clean soldered connections. If you see something that I have missed please feel free to point it out to me. I know the first set of pictures had not exactly portrayed what I have finished doing in the long run, but the picture I posted was close to where I am now.

i'm confused. is this your car, or the OP's car?


anyway, i was saying the wiring looked messy. specifically, the red wires running all over the engine bay.

engineers are some of the messiest people i know ;)

nice work on that relay wiring back there though. nice and clean.

This is my car... Roberts been doing all the wiring for me as I'm new to it. If you guys were referring to the wires in the engine bay... that was all from previous owner. Were working on cleaning it up and tucking later this month.

Red wires where from a ghetto fabbed subwoofer in the rear hatch... you don't even want to know what under the dash looks like /sigh

It was not my intent to be critical of the OP's car specifically; rather, I wanted to underscore Gordon's (and others) point that wiring is often overlooked or neglected yet it is as important and critical as say, proper fueling. (The latter of which I think is better understood.) Really, no system is stronger than its weakest link.

So k6, I'd say you're definitely off to a good start--doing it right.
